[Tolo News] An Afghan soldier was killed and eight others were maimed in a helicopter crash in central Daikundi province on Sunday evening, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place in Gezab district of the province when an Afghan National Army (ANA) helicopter crashed into the wall of the district's airport killing a soldier, front man for the Ministry of Defense (MoD), Dawlat Waziri said.
"Two pilots and six soldiers of the Crisis Response Unit (CRU) were maimed in the crash," Waziri said.
He said the helicopter was returning from a battle and "wanted to land at the airport, but faced technical issues."
Officials are investigating the crash to understand why and how this happened.

According to a front man for the provincial police chief, Jawid Basharat, the blast took place in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the province that claimed the life of a policeman and maimed another officer and seven students.
Basharat added that the victims have been taken to a nearby hospital and police investigation is underway.
No group has grabbed credit for the blast yet.
Insurgents often use improvised bombs (IEDs) to target the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), causing a higher rate of civilian casualties.

[Libya Herald] Two bodies, both believed to be members of a Benghazi unit allied with 17 February Brigade have been found on a beach in the south of the city months after their disappearance .
A source at Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) told the Libya Herald that one of the bodies had been positively identified and further information was required on a DNA match for the second because it was too badly decomposed.
The source said the first had been identified by his family as Waleed Kamal Al-Taweel who went missing with a fellow brigade member two months ago. The two men, members of 204 Tank Brigade, disappeared while leaving their base, close to 17 February Brigade's sprawling central Benghazi camp. They were presumed to have been kidnapped.
However the body of the second man has appeared on first inspection by the family of Taweel's companion not to have been their son. Medical staff are awaiting the results of a DNA test to ascertain the identity of the second man.

[Libya Herald] A member of the Libyan Army was assassinated by unidentified gunnies in the Al-Thama area of Benghazi on Sunday evening.
The victim, Abdul Monaim Ferjana, was taken to Benghazi Medical Center after sustaining multiple bullet wounds. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The reason for the killing is unknown, though it is assumed to have been politically motivated.
According to a Benghazi resident, the security situation is tense, as liquidations and kidnappings continue inside the city and large-scale military operations between the Libyan Army and those affiliated with the Benghazi Shura Council rage on at the city's outskirts.

Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. According to Yemeni security officials on Monday, fighting broke out in the district of al-Ghayl in the Yemeni Province of al-Jawf.
At least 25 people were killed and many others suffered injuries in the festivities.
The Houthis have also been staging demonstrations in the capital Sana'a for more than a month, demanding the formation of a new government and the reinstatement of fuel subsidies.
They say the government is corrupt and marginalizes the country's Shia community.

The security forces, however, relaxed the curfew from 6am till 8am in the morning and from 4pm to 6pm in the evening in order to facilitate movement on Bar Qambar Khel road.
Local residents said that the sudden curfew restrictions greatly affected students who could not reach their schools on time. Long queues of vehicles were seen on different roads as they were stopped by the security forces due to curfew restrictions.

The bullets hit him and a patient, Mohammed Ismail, 25. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Dr Hasan was pronounced dead.
Ismail's condition was stated to be out of danger.

The Obama administration says the training operation is needed to establish credible, local ground forces to accompany air strikes against the militants who have conquered large parts of Iraq and Syria
1. Training efforts do not seem to have been particularly effective with the Iraqis as they bugged out when confronted with ISIS forces.
2. If the training mission's real intent is to develop intelligence on the ground, that could be a good thing.
3. The problem of "instant jihad" by those being trained has been a problem for past training missions.

According to a friend of mine that's been over there several times, most of the problems that occurred with Iraqi troops deserting happened because their politically appointed officers fled, leaving a leadership vacuum. With decent leadership, the Iraqi soldier will fight very well. Unfortunately, only about one in a thousand of their officer corps is as dependable.

Retired General Jay Garner was on one of the talk shows this week end and he opined that our mistake was not keeping the Iraqi Army in one piece after the fall of Saddam. Garner claims the de-Baathification [the process of removing the members and influence of the Ba'ath Party from public office in Iraq following the US-led invasion of 2003] was not the original plan.
The Bush Administration selected Lieutenant General Jay Garner to lead the Coalition Provisional Authority (an intermediary government) in an attempt to rid Iraq of the chaos and anarchy that consumed the area. Garner's plan was to choose government officials from the former Iraqi regime to help lead the country. I suspect his [Garner's] objections to the de-Baath process and his efforts at helping the Kurds, led to his removal and replacement by the odious Paul Bremer, former Managing Director of Kissinger and Associates. Little more need be said.
General Garner entered the military as a United States Marine and later enlisted in the Army. Following his commissioning, he served two tours in Vietnam, first in 1967-68 as an infantry adviser in the central highlands, and as a district senior adviser in 1971-72 in the strategic hamlet program, which involved relocating Vietnamese in remote villages into areas heavily defended by American forces, he said. Over all, he said, the war in Vietnam was a failure because the United States had the ''wrong military objective.''
In the above photo he is shown wearing a Montagnard tribal Bracelet on his right wrist. I suspect he knows a bit about tribal politics and ethnic histories, not that that would matter to the Kissinger and Associates or the folks circling the drain in and around Foggy Bottom.

It wasn't "local militias." It was one militia: Ansar al Sharia. I suspect they were picked because the late ambassador Stevens had relatively good relations with them during the initial groundwork and run-up to overthrowing Ghadaffi.
As for "boots on the ground," that usually refers to military personnel. If Ansar al Sharia was trained, it was done as a facility-security team, under the auspices of the UK's Blue Mountain Group (BMG) as part of a Department of State contract. Security training, not combat training. State-contracted BMG, not DOD or DOD-contracted.
Let's keep the two separate for now, shall we? They may (and likely will) both end up being book-ended Charlie-Foxtrots, but at this point, the only resemblance is the "politics."

If true, it is encouraging the Iraqi air force is taking out ISIS.
The Kurds are involved and from what I can tell they are competent fighters.
The article goes goofy on us when it says:

Do militants = terrorists (ISIS)--that is not clear. Seems there is a difference in these terms according to the article.
Not likely the West is giving financial and military support to ISIL but maybe other militants. SA, Turkey, and Qatar have been reported as having financed some militants up in Syria.
The terrorist group has links with Saudi intelligence, and is believed to be supported by the Israeli regime.
It is doubtful Israel wants to get anywhere near this conflict. Whether or not Saudi intelligence has dirty hands, I couldn't say.

That should be the goal. Destruction of as much as ISIS as possible should also be a goal. Taking away their finances and means of financing and equipment (mostly furnished by us) should be another goal. Invalidating or demonizing their interpretation of Islam should also be an objective although this is probably best done by "moderate Muslims" (if this Muslim exists) . The Democrats are fairly good at demonizing opponents also. Other efforts should be going on across the world to limit ISIS in those countries. It might mean not letting them return to Western countries.

[MIAMIHERALD] Iraqi officials say two separate bombings have killed eight people in and around the capital.
Police officials say the first attack happened Monday afternoon when a roadside kaboomkaboom hit a patrol of anti-militant fighters, known as Sahwa, in the town of Madain, just south of Baghdad, killing three fighters and one civilian.
The Sahwa are made up of Sunni turbans who joined U.S. troops in the fight against al-Qaeda during the height of Iraq's insurgency in 2007 and 2008.
In a later attack, police say a sticky bomb attached to a minibus went kaboom! in Baghdad's southern district of Abu Dashir, killing four passengers and wounding six people.
Medical officials confirmed the causalities. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Kurdish fighters and members of the Islamic State group have been fighting each other for more than a year in northern Syria. The latest round of violence between the two sides began Saturday. Members of the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units, or YPK, have captured about 14 villages, according to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Nawaf Khalil, a front man for Syria's powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Monday that YPK forces have captured at least 10 villages in the northeastern province of Hassakeh.

Nearly fifty senior commanders of a major coalition of Islamic 'moderates' opposed to ISIS in Syria have been killed by an explosion at their secret lair command bunker as they met to discuss strategy against the the Islamic State.
Israelis? Americans? Ruritanians? Grand Duchy of Fenwick?
The blast in the Northwest region of Idlib, Syria on Tuesday killed senior members of rebel group the Ahrar-al-Sham brigade (AaS), including leader Hassan Abboud and 45 others including senior members from other rebel alliance groups, reports The Times. Sources dispute the source of the blast, with it being unclear whether it was an opposition group, suicide bomber, or accidental explosion at a nearby ammunition dump. Regardless, the incident will destabilise and possibly tear apart the AaS group and associated Islamic Front Coalition which was recently described as "the most powerful armed group in Syria".
Islamic group Ahrar-al-Sham, whose name translates as 'The Free Men of Syria', is one of many movements competing in the inter-rebel conflict in Syria. A number of rebel groups are presently fighting each other as well as besieged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose power base is in West and South-West, for overall control of the Region. As the main rival to ISIS for control of Syria, the AAS blast if not orchestrated by the Islamic State will certainly be greatly beneficial to them. The 'decapitation' strategy, targeting Ahrar-al-Sham's political, military and spiritual leadership is reminiscent of the United States' targeted strikes against the leadership of Al-Qaeda.
The death of Abboud and his followers in Idlib highlights the difficulty of Western involvement in the conflict, where enemies of the apparent first enemy ISIS also make fairly poor potential allies. Many members of AaS have come from groups like Al-Qaeda and would in any other context be considered hard line Islamists.
Ahrar-al-Sham has appointed a new leader, Hashim al-Sheikh, who will attempt to hold together the fragile coalition which has lost most of its senior thinkers and strategists. al-Sheik said the attack "will only make us more resilient to fight and continue the fight until we liberate our homeland" on Wednesday.

Ethel, where's my damned roster or scorecard of militant groups in Syria and northern Iraq? Was Ahrar-al-Sham (AsS) one of the militant groups Obama was counting on? Two things noted: Any Muslim group that has "sham" in their name or is abbreviated "ASS" should be suspect.
