[NY Daily News] The report by researchers at Australias Monash University and Britains Manchester University looked at how racism among whites and gun ownership is linked. The report used data from the American National Election Study and scored people based on their symbolic racism, which is used to measure anti-black sentiments. Besides keeping a gun at home, they were also more likely to oppose gun control reforms.
An interesting choice of subject and locale for English and Australian academics. It couldn't be that they had a conclusion looking for evidence, could it?

I own a gun because I am perfectly willing and actually quite capable of shooting people. Have unfortunately done it and it was completely legal too, and I rolled the body over and took a souvenir to remember him by. They said they were going to give me a Bronze Star but there was a technicality and the Captain said I would just have to forget about it. We got a Carbine off one of them, I think it was the young one's father. The kid had a carbine too, old things from back in the 50's, not well maintained either. We used it on night watch to throw down on anybody we shot in the dark overlooking the company dump. People crawled in there at night to get old batteries and stuff from the garbage. Couldn't have that.

More than 30,000 global jihadists have settled in and are fighting in countries that border with Israel. They belong to various groups, but they all have one dream: To liberate the Arab world from heretic regimes, with the climax being the liberation of Jerusalem. Afghanistan is already here; on our border.
Global jihad is the main concrete threat the army will be preparing for in 2014, and it is the focus of discussions the defense minister is holding with the General Staff ahead of the next working year. While not all of the IDF's top officers accept the term "Afghanistan is already here," there is broad agreement regarding the scope of the threat this development poses to Israel.
The argument is about the timetable: Is global jihad approaching the time when it will turn its attention to "take care" of the State of Israel, or does it need more time to establish itself on the ground and complete the mission of "taking care" of the heretic regimes of Assad, King Abdullah, General al-Sisi and others? IDF operational officers identify the jihadi threat as immediate. Army officials specializing in assessment are more cautious.
All the incidents that occurred along the borders between Israel and its neighbors since August 2011 involved global jihadists. The expected threat consists not only of the firing of rockets and missiles. Global jihad will try to breach the border and paint in the heart of Israel a picture of terror attacks similar to the one that is seen in Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis.

There are talks with Iran, dialogue with Syria and negotiations between Israel and the Paleostinians. The security establishment sees another positive development in the dramatic weakening of the Moslem Brüderbund in Egypt. Seemingly, our situation has never been better.
But all of these processes are expected to exhaust themselves towards May-June. The Iranians are talking about a solution within six months; the Syrians are supposed to get rid of their chemical weapons and head for elections in the summer of 2014; and Israel and the Paleostinians need to reach an agreement by April. What if these processes fail to yield results? Where will that put the State of Israel?
The only element in the Middle East that these processes have no effect on is global jihad. The dismantling of Syria's chemical weapons and the plan to reach a political agreement with the opposition in Syria does not interest global jihad. Lately there have been more and more festivities not only between global jihad and the Syrian army, but also between jihadists and moderate rebels. Global jihad settles in every area that is vacated in Syria, including the Deraa region, which is not far from the Israeli-Syrian-Jordanian border triangle. If they get a foothold in the Golan Heights, Israel will not be able to remain indifferent.
Meanwhile, ...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!... this cancer is spreading, and no one can stop it. Israelis will have to decide what they consider the lesser of two evils - Assad or the jihadists trying to topple him. Based on their attacks on Assad, it appears that they prefer the jihadists. We'll see if that pans out as well for them as it did for us, when we sponsored anti-Soviet Afghan rebels via Zia ul-Haq. We did it for a sound reason, namely that determining the lesser of two evils - the Afghan rebels vs the Soviets, who had 20K nukes in their armory - took all of a few seconds. The blowback from the Afghan adventure was bad, but the Afghans helped accelerate the fall of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, and that was worth something. Not sure what the Israelis are getting out of a jihadist victory in Syria.
These people need targeting.Is it state policy within the Gulf or do they still use the same excuse thats it private businessmen from Kuwait,UAE,Saudi and Qatar.

I don't think it's an excuse. And it's not just wealthy businessmen. Islamist fervor for jihads pervades their societies, partly because oil wealth has given them the means to contribute without making a dent in their wallets. The hoi polloi hate our guts, probably more intensely than ordinary Iranians hated our guts in the run-up to the Iranian revolution. The royals are wise to make anti-American noises every so often - it helps defuse the anger of ordinary folk who view them as puppets of the West.

In Afghanistan, Najibullah and his brother were tortured to death, mutilated and hanged by the Taliban not because they were cruel - they were exceeded in cruelty by the Taliban. They were singled out for special treatment because they were apostates, as all Communists are.
Ultimately, Muslims in majority Muslim countries are not blank slates waiting for either the West or their leaders to write on. They have historical and cultural traditions that predate the leader of the moment by 1300 years and will literally defend those traditions to the death, not in open battle, but via subterfuge, assassination and coup. And these traditions are what drive Pakistani leaders to pretend to criticize the use of American drones to kill the Taliban over Pakistani airspace even though any gun-armed 50's era jet aircraft could shoot them down with impunity *and* they are actually personally happy that Uncle Sam is helping them with pest control. The Pakistani man on the street hates the US, and any leader who appears to be openly aligned with the US is obviously tired of public life (and perhaps of life altogether).

...There's a couple things out of whack with this article, but for the most part he's on point. Keep in mind a couple things:
*As Phil B pointed out, this will have to be an atmospheric shot. Exoatmospheric means you'll hurt people you don't want to hurt, though in that part of the world it's hard for the Israelis to tell the difference.
*A high atmospheric shot over Tehran (and/or Qom) will do more than send the Iranians back into the 1800s - it will effectively remove any semblance of control the mullahs have over that beknighted land. And you would be surprised, I think, at just how many people in how many places over the Iranian map would suddenly decide that they were the best successors.
And how many people in other countries (ah-ah-AH-CHOOCommunist China) felt they were best qualified to go in and 'help' the poor Iranians.

It very likely would bring near-unanimous condemnation; Champ would certainly lead the U.S. into breaking relations (or at the very least stopping all aid). The Euros would follow. Putin and Russia might well be even more direct.
Israel's neighbors (the ones not whacked with the EMP) could be goaded into responding: Egypt has a semi-decent military that wouldn't mind fighting someone besides their own citizens. That they would very likely lose big-time wouldn't stop them from trying.
My calculation is that Israel would do a Tehran-EMP only if it believes itself to be completely, truly cornered. Stakes are too high for it be otherwise.

I concur Dr. Steve. Being "cornered" or pulling your opponent into the corner is also a good strategy. The enemy can only approach from one angle, and the response can indeed be characterized as cold, ruthless survival, culminating with a speedy and in this case, potentially horrific culmination.

I've got a better idea. We can make a computer virus that'll screw up all of their electronics so that they can't launch any programs. I hear the NSA already has a prototype in testing, called "Windows 8."
It's been a month of leaks, a battle on both sides of the Atlantic between the hawks and doves crescendoing with Netanyahu cancelling his second day of meetings and demanding Mossad polygraph his entire security cabinet. I'll leave out the dramas. But two noteworthy leaks from all this: a battle plan and a hint to having a secret weapon.
At first I thought the battle plan leaked what the secret weapon is. The leaked plan details Israeli aircraft AND MISSLES being coated with a cheap but effective nano particle paint that eats radar and makes planes nearly stealth/invisible. But. I think I know what's up their sleeve. There was an Israeli op-ed about sending Iran back to the stone age with an Electromagnetic Pulse Weapon (EMP). But the author was talking nuclear, and that's a no-go.
However I think I'm nailing it here - non nuclear electronic pulse weapon. Soviets and US built them in the 1960s. I have a little traction here. A prominent Israeli counter-terrorism expert Yael Shahar (Director of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism) has whole lectures on how easy it would to build one. Her lectures are mostly defensive in ways to harden infrastructure and airlines.
But! She's often quoted, "the really alarming thing is that non nuclear EMP weapons are 'not technically challenging to build'.
The alleged war plan said the Israeli strike would begin with an unprecedented cyberattack designed to paralyze the Iranian regime and blind it to what was happening on its territory. The Internet, telephones, radio and television transmissions, the electrical grid would all be taken out.
The trial run for the initial strike was Syria. Israelis hacked their air defenses and turned them off. Got into the electric grid and turned off the power. Hacked the cell towers, sent texts mssgs to everyone in the vicinity to flee or get bombed, then they turned the towers off. They were in and out before Syria knew what hit em.
Next phase is missle and cruise missle (land and sea based) strikes on command and control, research and development, and high value personnel and govt figures. Remember that "invisible" paint, even if they get some of their systems back up, the paint will make the missiles invisible. No warnings.
This is the phase the non nuclear ectronic pulse missles are used. Totally crippling Iranian infrastructure.
Then the IAF goes in and mops up.
Israelis are domestically producing bunkbusters, little 500 pounders. Also in their arsenal are 100s of US made 1000 and 5000 pounders.
Another trending headlines this year, the electronic warfare unit of the IAF have been bragging about capabilities.
Janes says the Israelis don't have enough air tankers to successfully carry the strike out. But a German Cold War relic Hans Rühle another security expert takes the opposite side.

Israel would have to have its back to the Wailing Wall before they used an NEMP. That said, they did take out Iraq's and Syria's nuclear capability. The world made outraged noises but it didn't go very far at the time.
