State media said villagers in the south were attacked on Tuesday night by around 100 armed bandidos who killed people and made away with dozens of cattle.
The day before, festivities between criminals and the security forces in Belo-Tsiribihina, in the south-west, resulted in the death of three army officers.
Police said criminal gangs, under the control of Arthur Rabefihavanana alias Remenabila, are behind the attacks.
Rabefihavanana was once part of the presidential guard regiment under incumbent President Admiral Didier Ratsiraka.

[actually a line from Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid]
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Chad's FPR rebel chief Abdel Kader Baba Ladde, who was wanted by his country's army, landed in the capital Ndjamena Wednesday, days after turning himself in to Central African armed forces.
The leader of the Popular Front for Recovery (FPR) arrived in Ndjamena aboard a UN plane and was welcomed by Chad's Public Security Minister Ahmat Bachir, an AFP journalist reported.
"I'm pleased to be back home in Chad, I hope the rest will follow," Baba Ladde said, adding that "the FPR did not come (to Chad) to make political demands".
"We have no demands, our wish is for peace in our country and throughout the subregion," he said.
Baba Ladde, who claims to fight for the Fula tribe whose people are spread over many African countries, surrendered Sunday in Central Africa after negotiations with the United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... and other groups.
"We're happy to have accompanied Baba Ladde home," said Central African mediator Paulin Pomodimo on Wednesday.
He added that Chad officials had guaranteed the rebel chief's physical well-being.

Georgia, Tbilisi -- Georgia will surely become a NATO member, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in Tbilisi on Thursday at a joint press conference following the meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. So Tbilisi is Berlin is Paris is Rome is New York...
Commenting on the statement by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that the 2008 war was aimed to wreck Georgia's accession to NATO, Rasmussen said that "in this case this plan failed."
"Georgia will become a NATO member, since it is the right of any state, if certain requirements are meet, and no third country can prevent it," he said. "We said at the Bucharest summit that Georgia will become a NATO member, and at the Chicago summit this year we confirmed this decision, and we have stated clearly that our doors are open to countries that carry out reforms. You are carrying out these reforms and achieved in this way a great success and we are confident that Georgia will become a NATO member."

Not that I don't like Georgia and all but NATO is really unlikely to risk our big cities to defend the little nation so having them join NATO is simply asking for humiliation and needlessly provoking the Russians.

Currently yes "Obama and the dhims". The party has been hijacked by a collection of oddball groups interested in their own needs not the countries. The majority of Democrats have no interest in this current crop of leadership. I believe turnout for this next election will be one of the lowest for the Democrats. Like pulling for the Redskins. Only seniors pull for them because they are old enough to remember they had won anything. Normal down to earth leaders will change everything for them. Dog collared leaders and leather tight stone faces are out. This comedy has gone on too long.

I don't mind defending Georgia, but do we have to defend Jimmy Carter too?

We don't need to defend Israel. They are more than capable of doing that themselves. We just need to make sure they have the few extra toys they ask for so they can do their job.
And we also need to keep from undermining them politically.

I'm starting to understand why a certain agency in VA is advertising for new field personnel. It's not just a job - it's an adventure. Especially when the Spetsnaz are breathing down your back. Ahhh well, it beats boredom I guess :-)
