Authorities say a New York man appearing before a judge on a felony drunken driving charge arrived at court an hour and a half late, drunk and carrying an open can of Busch beer.
Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty says Keith Gruber of Swan Lake had four unopened beer cans in his bag Monday when he tried to walk through the metal detector at the county courthouse.
The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports that Judge Frank LaBuda asked the 49-year-old Gruber if he enjoyed his "liquid lunch." Gruber said he did, then said he was sorry. The judge revoked his bail and sent him to jail, where he remained Tuesday.
Gruber was arrested Dec. 27 in the town of Liberty and was out on $30,000 cash bail. He has prior DWI convictions.
[Straits Times] DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vehemently denied that he is the man in the sex video, saying that this was a 'scurrilous attack' on him.
'I categorically deny it,' said the Opposition Leader. Mr Anwar said he had been told that the man in the video looked similar to him but with a larger tummy.
'His belly is way bigger than mine. Look at mine; mine is small,' quipped Mr Anwar, who stood up to show his belly at a packed presser yesterday evening. He was flanked by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and other party leaders.
Those present burst out laughing as a smiling Mr Anwar pointed to his belly with Dr Wan Azizah next to him. The couple were in a jovial mood as they posed for the cameras. A man who called himself 'Datuk T' showed the video, dated Feb 21, to journalists yesterday morning.
The sexual encounter was alleged to have taken place in a hotel room. Mr Anwar, who said he had yet to watch the video, said he was at home with his staff, wife, children and grandchildren when the supposed incident took place.
'I was at home and I did tweet at approximately the alleged time. I have saved the timing records as proof, knowing that my Twitter and Facebook accounts can be hacked. 'I have not seen the video and I do not know the maker,' he said, adding that he did not know who 'Datuk T' was.

Uh, uh, TV's WILLIAM "E-V-I-L" SHATNER > "YOU WIN THIS TIME, GOOD TWIN"!
Elizabeth Taylor, the last of the great Hollywood studio stars and the first of the modern mega-celebrities, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday morning at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital. Although seemingly ageless, she was in fact 79.
Before undergoing a sex change to become a woman, Monika Strub was a member of Germany's neo-Nazi NPD party. But ten years later, she is running for Baden-Württemberg's state parliament for the socialist Left party.... I wanted to write something snarky, but I'm just not creative enough to match the sheer absurdity of this one.

Neo-nazi, Socialist left? A distinction without a difference.

Let's get this straight (cough). It's the National SOCIALIST WORKERS Party. It is not 'right' or 'conservative'. The intentional confusion is the result of decades of repetition by the usual suspects to cover the death, cruelty, and misery visited upon humanity by just another shade of socialism.
The Tomball Police Department recently added a gyroplane to its fleet, thanks to a Department of Justice program aimed at helping more cops get support from the air. I believe the proper term for such a craft is "autogyro". It has little relation to helicopters, it is simply an ultralight craft with a rotating wing. It cannot hover. It gets its propulsion from a traditional propeller, usually mounted behind the pilot. The rotor up top is not powered and simply provides passive lift when it rotates while being pushed through the air, like the stationary wings of more familiar aircraft.
The DOJ's Law Enforcement Aviation Technology Program purchased the craft for $40,000. The program also provided training for the officers who'll be flying it as part of Tomball PD's new Aviation Unit. Aviation Technology Program? Cops as air cadets?
Adelman says police can use craft like the gyroplane for purposes ranging from drug enforcement to search-and-rescue operations. He says that in return for the funding, Tomball police will help the DOJ program's research on the use of these craft. Well, it's not the aircraft, it's the sensors attached to that aircraft. The photo just looks like a two-seater lawnmowermobile.
According to a City of Tomball press release, the Auto-Gyro MTOsport gyroplane uses only three to four gallons of fuel per hour. Adelman says it costs less than $40 per hour to operate.
Though gyroplanes are not yet common in American law enforcement, the city's release says they have a good record among European police departments. Really? Huh.

Wednesday afternoon NHK World TV reported a new sighting of black smoke coming out of No. 3 reactor, prompting an evacuation from the entire site. Cause was stated as 'unclear.'

So three of the six nukes were under maintenance at the time of the quake. That suggests they present less of a hazard to the rest of the world.
I'm glad to find that out, 12 days after the event. But what if you don't read Rantburg or the Japanese media? Will you ever find that little tidbit of information?

You wonder aloud over lunch with friends or colleagues about that very question, and it will turn out that one member of the group will either know the answer or will pull out his smartphone to do a quick google to find out. I probably google something half a dozen times a day -- and I'm no computer maven.

TW, it must be nice to be able to afford one of those portable smartphone thingies!
It must be, Scooter. I envy those who have one, too, but my life isn't exciting enough that I need internet access at the grocery store. I have to run home to my very basic laptop when I want to google something. Fortunately for my google habit, I'm not out and about all that much.

Black smoke at reactor 3 is not the steam/white smoke that has been common. As it occured at about the same time as the attempts to restore electricity I suspect some electrical component did not survive being re-energized.

I want to hear what is happening with the other 10 cities leveled by the Tsunami in Japan. The roller coaster ride that is this nuke plant is not even 1/3rd of the story.
#10
The trick of successful operation of electrical or electronic gear is to keep the black smoke in the enclosure, motor, transformer, etc. There are always tons of black smoke inside every electrical device. Keep it inside and you will be a success and rewarded handsomely.

Abu do you love, Alaska Paul has Alaska-sized toys, with commensurately more intense smoke. So you're both right. ;-)
[Iran Press TV] Strong earthquakes have shaken Japan's northeast coast, but no tsunami warning has been issued, the US Geological Survey reported.
Two earthquakes of 6.6 and 6.4 magnitude struck within two and a half hours off Japan's tsunami-hit northeast coast on Tuesday.
There were no reports of casualties and no tsunami warnings.
Japan is still suffering the consequences of a record 9.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Japan's northeast coast on March 11, leaving over 21,000 people dead and triggering a crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
According to the latest update by Japan's National Police Agency, death toll from the quake reached 9,080 in 12 prefectures, while the number of missing came to 13,561 in six prefectures.
More than 350,000 people are still living in evacuation centers or temporary housing in northern and eastern Japan, many of them short of food, water and fuel.

That's silly, JosephM. Had Khadaffy not turned in his nuclear stash, we never would have known about it, so it would not have entered into our calculations... though we might have been sorry about that afterward.

Alaska , Arkansas, and California earthquake activity have increased but in California I believe intensity has increased to 3 something. All except Arkansas in the "ring of fire". 6.6 is big in a very unstable area anyway.

www.iceagenow,com has this Piers Corbin quote "The very active solar region which emerged from the SE limb of the sun on the morning of 21st March is crackling with dangerous activity including extreme UV radiation and up to 50Mev proton bursts. This fits our long-range warning issued during February".
I guess we have enjoyed the lull before the storm.

Border Patrol agents recently arrested 13 illegal immigrants disguised as U.S. Marines and riding in a fake military van, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday.
The illegal immigrants were clad in Marine uniforms when they were apprehended at the Campo Border Patrol Westbound I-8 checkpoint at 11 p.m. on March 14 near Pine Valley, Calif., border officials said. Two U.S. citizens in the van also were arrested.
[Tolo News] Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav was sentenced to seven years in jail on Tuesday for having forced sex with women working for him, reports say.
The case has been described as the biggest "shame and strain" in Israel's highest office.
Katsav, 65, had denied charges he twice raped an aide when he was a cabinet minister in the late 1990s, and sexually harassed two other women at office during his 2000-2007 term as president.
Rape carries a minimum prison term of four years and a maximum of 16 years in Israel.
The outbreak of Katsav's affair had showcased the level of corruption that brought down Israel's then premier, Ehud Olmert.

"You do the crime, you do the time." That's one of the differences between Israel and, lets say, prouder democracies.
[Straits Times] A TOP official in Myanmar says a decades-old insurgency in the country could be curbed with the help of neighboring Thailand.
Information Minister Kyaw Hsan did not mention Thailand by name, but referred to the country neighbouring Kayin State. Karen ethnic rebels in that eastern region have been fighting for autonomy.
The government-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that Kyaw Hsan made the comments Monday in response to a question in parliament.
Aside from Thailand, he was also quoted as saying 'the modest cooperation' of certain powers and non-governmental organisations would lead to an effective solution to Kayin's unrest.
Myanmar is ruled by a military junta. Human rights groups have long accused the army of abuses in Death Eater areas.

The sponsors of a Tennessee bill targeting organizations that practice Sharia are rewriting the measure to remove all references to religion.
The new version takes out language that said Sharia advocates violence and threatens the United States and Tennessee constitutions. The change makes clear that peaceful religious practices wouldn't be considered a violation.
One of the sponsors said, "It is about protecting our citizens from those who would use religious doctrine as a justification to commit criminal activities or terrorist acts."
"I think it's a victory for common sense and legislative restraint," Ibrahim Hooper said. "This is a win for Tennessee's Muslim community."
Mohamed Ahmed, imam of the Islamic Center of Nashville, was pleased that language that implicated Muslims was removed from the bill, but he wondered whether lawmakers in Tennessee should press ahead when the federal government already has broad powers to fight terrorism.
"I don't think there is a need for it. It's not going to target me as a Muslim, but it's going to target other people," he said.
