You've probably noticed that I'm working on the translator. I expect it'll be an on-going project for awhile.
It's pretty crude, just a direct replacement of common word combinations: "death toll" becomes "corpse count," "arrested" becomes "jugged", "Peshawar" becomes "Beautiful Downtown Peshawar," and so on. Right now it's only on the moderator's popup editor. When I've got it where I want it, it'll show up on the Poster.
I've been tagging them as "Rantburg translation" but I might change that to "Autoedited by Rantburg." Bad's doing actual translations (from Spanish to English). "Editing" is probably a more accurate description.
Give me feedback -- maybe favorite phrases with suggested renderings.

Anonymous or unnamed sources should be rumor mongers or something like that.
corpse should be dead tango
militant needs something.....hmmm....terrorist, or something more colorful.
We need to post a list of main phrases or words used by MSM and let the readers go at it. Then we can make a spreadsheet or database and pick the best words or phrases from suggestions. It would be fun.

The Dialectizer takes text and translates it to one of the following: Redneck, Jive, Cockney, Elmer Fudd, Swedish Chef, Moron, Pig Latin, and Hacker (an early version of Hacker, not yet evolved into full L33T-speak).
For example: "Yo've probably noticed thet ah's wawkin' on th' translato'. ah speck it'll be an on-gwine projeck fo' awhile."
"Yer've probably noticed that I'm bloody well workin' on the bloomin' translator, right? I expect it'll be an on-gahn project for orhile."

Rantburg translation PESHAWAR, Pakistain (AFP) -- US missiles hit a compound in Pakistain's tribal belt Sunday, killing four hard boys in a second dronezap in as many days in the region seen as al-Qaeda headquarters. The missiles fired by a pilotless drone targeted the compound in Shaktoi area in South Wazoo, a Pakistaini security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP.
"The US drone fired two missiles into a hard boy compound in Shaktoi and we have reports that four hard boys have died," he said. "One missile landed in the compound and another hit a vehicle soon after it entered the premises," he said, adding that five other hard boys were wounded. An intelligence official and a local administration official also confirmed the dronezap.
A security official said the target appeared to be the vehicle, which had arrived from neighbouring North Wazoo. "The vehicle was destroyed and the compound was badly damaged causing the casualties," he added. "The identity of the deaders was not immediately known. It was not clear if any foreigners were there, he said, adding that there were reports that the drone fired four missiles. That's 20 in 2 days.

Looks like the hunting is good this weekend. Another hit...
Later Sunday, two missiles hit a house in Taipi village near Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan, killing seven suspected militants, said the officials.
The Taliban have offered to exchange the body of a U.S. Navy member they said was killed in an ambush two days ago in exchange for insurgent prisoners, an Afghan official said Sunday.
U.S. and NATO officials confirmed that two American Navy personnel went missing Friday in the eastern province of Logar, after an armored sports utility vehicle was seen driving into a Taliban-held area. Afghan officials believe one was killed and the other captured when they apparently took a wrong turn and ended up in a dangerous area of Logar.
Abdul Wali, the head of the provincial governing council, said local authorities responded to the Taliban offer made through intermediaries by saying, "Let's talk about the one that is still alive." The insurgents said they would have to talk to superiors before making any deal.
Local media in Logar reported the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the two Americans.
However, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press on Sunday that that he had no information about U.S. sailors in Taliban hands. He said he was looking into the reports and for the moment is not claiming responsiblity.
It appeared that Friday's attack was a spur-of-the-moment decision and that the militants are trying to figure out their next move.
The two sailors left their compound in the Afghan capital, Kabul, in a vehicle Friday afternoon, but never returned, NATO said in a statement. Vehicles and helicopters were dispatched to search for them, and NATO launched appeals on local radio stations offering $10,000 rewards for information leading to the return of either one.
A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the event, confirmed the two were Navy personnel, but would not identify their unit to avoid jeopardizing search operations. The official said it was unclear what the two were doing or what would lead them to leave their compound. The official would not say whether the two were on official business.

[Pak Daily Times] Police searched for weapons and residents were on edge here Saturday ahead of the one-year anniversary of a deadly uprising by the Nigerian Taliban, with fears it would strike again.
A sect leader believed killed appeared on video issuing threats recently, adding to concerns that the militant group was reforming, though local police dismiss the clips as digital mock-ups and insist he is dead.
Authorities have set up night checkpoints and are searching vehicles in a bid to keep weapons from entering the city of Maiduguri - the centre of the uprising.
A dozen police vans escorted by a siren-blaring armoured car had been regularly rumbling through the city's streets, but the show of force was halted recently because it rattled residents, a police officer said.
"This is part of the security strategy because these troublemakers may want to use the cover of night to bring in arms," said a police sergeant at a checkpoint on Friday night, where about a dozen cars waited. Last year's uprising began on July 26 and spread to four states, though it was centred in Maiduguri in the country's mainly Muslim north. It ended four days later with more than 800 dead, most of them sect members. The military and police launched an assault on the sect's headquarters, leaving it in rubble.
The sect leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was also killed. Police were accused of killing him after he had been captured alive, but officers said he was shot while trying to escape from custody. His deputy, Abubakar Shekau, was believed killed as well, but video clips have emerged in recent months in which he threatens to "avenge the killings of our brethren."
"What happened was only the prelude, the actual show has not started yet," he says in one clip. While Monday marks the anniversary of the start of the insurrection, Friday may pose a larger risk since it is the date Yusuf was killed. The scale of the uprising and military assault last year shocked the country, Africa's most populous and where roughly half of the 150 million population is Muslim.
The sect, while known as the Nigerian Taliban, is also called Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sin" in local dialect. Its ranks had been filled by a range of recruits, including university drop-outs, unemployed youths and those seeking to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state. "Everybody is apprehensive of what might happen in the next few days," Maiduguri resident Abdulqahhar Idrissa told.
"Rumours are all over the city that members of Boko Haram are going to strike during the anniversary and everyone is afraid because we know the agony we went through last year during the fighting." Authorities have said in recent weeks that there were concerns the sect was reforming, and hundreds of anti-riot police reinforcements have been deployed in Maiduguri.

[Pak Daily Times] Tribal mediators succeeded Saturday in reaching a ceasefire between Yemen's northern sock puppets of the Medes and the Persians and an army-backed tribe after days of fighting that killed at least 70 people, a tribal chief said. Sheikh Qassem Qubaida, who led a mediation team of tribal chiefs, told AFP that the Houthis and the Bin Aziz tribe, led by MP Sheikh Sagheer Aziz, were "persuaded... to stop firing".
He said that the fighting which had flared up again on Friday night around the village of Bin Aziz in Harf Sufyan, in northern Amran province, stopped at around 11:00 am (0800 GMT) on Saturday. The road linking the restive Saada region with the capital Sanaa through Amran, which was blocked for about a week, was being opened "by clearing the mines planted by the Huthis," he said.
A witness told AFP that Houthis attempted to storm the house of Aziz on Friday night, adding that they bombed the house of his nephew, killing him. This brought the weekly corpse count from the fighting to at least 70 people, after 69 were killed in earlier clashes. The toll is expected to rise further as casualties from Friday's night gunfight were not counted. The week's clashes have rattled an already fragile truce agreed in February that ended a six-month round of fighting in the conflict between the rebels and the army, which started in 2004. The Huthis and the government have repeatedly exchanged accusations of violating the February ceasefire.

The Allahar Dal men will be produced before the court on Sunday with the prayer of a ten-day remand for each of them for further interrogation, said Gaibandha Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sahadat Hossain.

A Coahuila court has ordered the preventative detention of at least two of the CERESO officials, for 20 days.
An "interrogation" video posted by groups associated with the Los Zetas criminal gang have apparently led to the arrest of seven people including a prison director in Durango, with suspected ties to the July 18th massacre in Torreon, Coahuila, according to Mexican press reports.
Sunday morning Mexican news reports say Rodriguez is to be detained without charge for 20 days pending an investigation for the charge of murder. Under Mexican Federal law certain persons can be detained for up to 40 days as a preventative measure if their alleged crimes are serious enough to warrant it.
Lerdo, Durango police agent Rodolfo Najera, shown having been beaten in the video, apparently told Los Zetas members while at gunpoint that several people at the Gomez Palacio, Durango Centro de Readaptacion Social (CERESO) No.2 planned and carried out the murder of 17 birthday party goers early on July 18th.
Najera was one of four Lerdo police officers who came up missing since last Tuesday. Najera was subsequently murdered on the same video.
Saturday was learned that director of the CERESO, Margarita Rojas Rodriguez as well as three of her staff, including a deputy director, Jose Luis Zaragoza, were placed under arrest for their alleged involvement the the July 18th and other similar mass murders.
In other news reports Saturday, it was learned that three prison guards and one inmate were also placed under arrest as the alleged shooters in the incident. Other information has it that at least 31 guards at CERESO No. 2 are under investigation or arrest.
Rojas Rodriguez had attended law school in Saltillo and took over operations at CERESO No.2 in August, 2009 from Ernesto Fernandez Perez who had been forced out after less than a month following a prison riot in which 20 inmates were killed.

From NY Times today: Prisoners in a northern Mexico jail were allowed out at night to carry out murder-for-hire jobs using jail guards weapons and vehicles. Among the jobs, the authorities said, was last weeks attack on birthday revelers at a party hall. The gang shot randomly into the crowd, they said, killing 17 people.
Ballistics studies confirmed that four guns used in the shooting were the same as those assigned to jail guards, Ricardo Nájera, the spokesman for the attorney generals office, said. Mr. Nájera said the jails director, Margarita Rojas Rodríguez, allowed prisoners to leave in official vehicles and use the guards guns in the executions.

North Korea has renewed its request to examine the wreckage of the sunken South Korean warship Cheonan.
Afraid you missed something, boys?
Actually, it's been raised - but they don't need to be told that...
Good point. Take them out to sea and ask them, "is this the spot? Over you go!"
The request was made Friday during a second round of talks with the UN Command at the border village of Panmunjom. Those talks were arranged this month to discuss the March sinking.
The U.S.-led military command said afterward it demanded that the North admit responsibility for the sinking. North Korea denies responsibility, despite an investigation that found remains of a North Korean torpedo. Its official news agency said its delegates asked to send a team of experts to examine the wreckage, repeating a demand made at the earlier meeting. A third round of talks was tentatively scheduled for July 29.
North Korea's news agency said its delegates also demanded that the United States and South Korea cancel a naval exercise scheduled to begin Sunday in the East Sea. North Korean officials made the same demand at a regional security forum in Vietnam, where a spokesman warned of a "physical response" if the exercise goes ahead.
The UN Command, which enforces the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, has conducted its own investigation of the Cheonan incident.

Rantburg translation [Pak Daily Times] Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi Bajaur Agency chief Dr Ismail laid down arms along with six other terrorists and announced their full support for the Pakistain Army in the war against terrorism, officials said on Saturday.
According to political administration officials, Dr Ismail surrendered along with six other terrorists to the political authorities in a grand tribal jirga of the Badan tribe in Mohmand tehsil, which was held at Khar, the headquarters of the Bajaur Agency. He said that successful military operations restored peace and prosperity in the area and now it was the responsibility of the tribal elders to keep the agency free of terrorists.
Colonel Saeed praised the role of the Mohmand tribes in the operation against terrorists and said the tribal elders had helped eliminate terrorists from the area. [Pak Daily Times] Terrorists on Saturday murdered the son of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aka Terrorism Central Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain in Nowshera.
According to police, two motorcyclists opened fire on Mian Rashid Hussain and his nephew Amjad, while they were walking in a bazaar. Rashid gave up the ghost, while Amjad was maimed in the attack.
Rashid, 30, was the only son of Mian Iftikhar Hussain and was working as assistant director in the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar Development Authority (PDA). For the past two years, the KP information minister had been receiving death threats from hard boys for his outspoken stance against terrorism.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik blamed the attack on the Taliban, saying government ministers and their families had been on an insurgent hit list.
Condemning the murder, the ANP leadership said that killing of their family members would not weaken their stance against the Orcs and similar vermin. "Such cowardly acts by the Orcs and similar vermin will further strengthen our resolve against terrorism," the party leadership said in a statement.
ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and other ministers strongly condemned the incident and said that Orcs and similar vermin had now started targeting their family members.
"The ANP will not bow down to Orcs and similar vermin and will continue to make sacrifices for the sake of establishing peace in the province by continuing the war against Orcs and similar vermin," he said.
ANP leader and federal minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour also condemned the attack.
Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has expressed his profound grief over the death. He telephoned Iftikhar Hussain and strongly condemned the "cowardly attack" and said they'd get right on it.

Autoedited by Rantburg Al Qaeda in Iraq has claimed responsibility for two attacks against its former Sunni Muslim allies which killed at least 43 people last Sunday.
We knew that ...
In the deadliest attack, a boomer struck members of the government-backed 'Sahwa' militia as they lined up to be paid on Baghdad's southwestern outskirts, killing at least 39 and wounding 41, Iraqi security sources said.
In the second, a boomer killed four and wounded six at a meeting of local Sunni militia leaders in western Iraq, near the Syrian border, police in Anbar province said.
In a statement posted on a website often used by Islamists, Al Qaeda said it had conducted the attacks as part of action against 'leaders of apostasy', a term used for Sunni fighters who once allied with Al Qaeda but turned on the hard boy group in 2006/07, helping US forces turn the tide in the war. 'A lion of the Islamic State managed to intrude among the cattle after they were blinded by pickings of money thrown by the ... government and they fell into the torture of God,' the statement said.
Sunni Islamist turbans linked to Al Qaeda have sought to exploit the political vacuum created by a failure of Sunni, Shia and Kurdish factions to agree on a coalition government following an inconclusive March 7 parliamentary election, and have carried out a series of attacks since the vote.
It's more like a death rattle. There aren't many in Iraq who want to return to 2005, or 2000.
Sahwa leaders have been among the primary targets. Some of the attacks have been attributed to acts of Dire Revenge™ by former fellow turbans, while others have been blamed on long-running blood feuds between families.
The US military has increasingly taken a backseat role since pulling out of Iraqi urban centres in June last year and US troops will end combat operations formally on Aug. 31, before a full withdrawal next year.
US military leaders say Al Qaeda's capabilities in Iraq have been severely degraded in recent months. General Ray Odierno, the top US military commander in Iraq, said in early June that 34 of the top 42 Al Qaeda leaders in Iraq had been killed or captured in the previous 90 days.

[Pak Daily Times] Iran said on Saturday that it has arrested suspected accomplices of two boomers who attacked a Shia mosque in the restive southeast earlier this month killing at least 28 people. "Some of those who helped the boomers behind the Zahedan crime have been identified and some have been arrested," state news agency IRNA quoted deputy interior minister Ali Abdollahi as saying.
He did not specify how many were in custody. "It is evident to us that the people who carried out the terrorist attack in Zahedan's Jamia mosque were linked to the Rigi group," Abdollahi said, referring to the Sunni hard boy group Jundollah, whose long time leader Abdolmalek Rigi was executed in Tehran last month. Jundollah claimed the July 15 twin bombing in Zahedan, capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, which it said targeted members of the elite Revolutionary Guards. Police said that the day after the twin bombing they killed six "criminals" in Sistan-Baluchestan province and arrested 40 people for "creating disturbances" in Zahedan.
