Afghan security forces seized 1.4 tonnes of opium in western Afghanistan near the border with Iran, authorities said on Saturday.
Seven men were detained in connection with Thursday's haul in Herat province, the interior ministry said in a statement.
Afghanistan is the world's top opium producer and last year produced 8,200 tonnes of the substance, or 92 percent of global production. About 60 percent of the opium leaves the country in the form of heroin, according to UN figures. Islamic Taliban insurgents earn millions of dollars every year from the trade, officials say.

Gunmen in a dangerous part of southern Afghanistan assassinated an Afghan lawmaker, while a roadside bomb militants were planting detonated prematurely, killing 10 Taliban, officials said Saturday.
The gunmen killed parliament member and former military commander Habibullah Jan after he visited an Afghan army compound in the Zhari district of Kandahar late Friday, said Kandahar provincial council member Bismillih Afghanmul. Zhari is a volatile part of Kandahar contested heavily by militants and Canadian forces over the last two years. Taliban fighters have frequently targeted Afghan officials, but Jan's death was the first of a parliamentarian in months.
In neighboring Helmand province, militants planting a roadside bomb detonated the device prematurely, killing 10 Taliban, said police chief Mohammad Hussein Andiwal. The fact one bomb killed so many men appears to reflect the increased size of explosives Taliban fighters have been using in recent months. The bigger bombs -- long used in Iraq but a fairly new phenomenon in Afghanistan -- are shredding through heavily armored U.S. and NATO vehicles and killing multiple soldiers in one attack.
The deaths came the same day that the U.S. military said airstrikes by its attack helicopters hit two vehicles carrying insurgents in eastern Afghanistan. Nuristan's Gov. Tamim Nuristani said by telephone that 22 civilians were killed in the strikes in the Waygal district on Friday, including a woman and a child. But a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition said Friday the airstrikes in Nuristan province hit militants who earlier attacked a U.S. military base with mortars.
The helicopters identified the militants' firing positions, tracked them down and destroyed the vehicles they were traveling in, said 1st Lt. Nathan Perry. "These were combatants. These were people who were firing on us," Perry said. "We have no reports of noncombatant injuries." He gave no account of casualties in the vehicles. The bodies were brought to a provincial hospital, Nuristani said. Seven other people were wounded.

An explosion killed a Somali official, his wife and four others Saturday in the capital Saturday, witnesses and officials said.
In a separate attack, Islamist rebels said they ambushed a convoy of Ethiopian troops allied to Somalia's shaky transitional government, but the number of casualties was not immediately known.
Hassan Illmi Abtidoon, the deputy district commissioner of Mogadishu's Yaqshid district, was traveling in a car in the capital along with his wife, driver and three bodyguards, said Ahmed Gedi, who worked with the official.
The vehicle had just left Abtidoon's house when a remote-controlled land mine exploded under the vehicle, Gedi said, adding that all six were killed in the blast. Bus driver Abdi Gurey, who was right behind the car at the time of the attack, said "a huge explosion sent it into the air."
Targeted assassinations of officials are common in Somalia, where Islamic insurgents have vowed to fight an Iraq-style insurgency against the weak and corrupt U.N.-supported government.
The attack on the Ethiopian troop convoy occurred near the Somalia-Ethiopia border, said Sheik Abdirahin Issa Adow, a spokesman for the Islamist insurgency. He said the fighters destroyed three vehicles and killed soldiers on two trucks, but did not know the number of casualties.
Resident Huseen Ahmed Rage said the site of the ambush was soaked in blood, but he did not see any bodies. Somali and Ethiopian officials were not immediately available to confirm the attack.
In December 2006, Somali soldiers and their Ethiopian allies ousted Islamist insurgents who had taken over the capital. Since then, the insurgents have been battling the transitional government. The Islamists had ruled Mogadishu and much of southern Somalia for six months.
Ethiopian and Somali government forces come under daily attack in the capital.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and turned on each other.
The current conflict is complicated by the involvement of arch enemies Eritrea and Ethiopia, who support the opposing sides, and a complicated web of clan loyalties.

RAFAH, Egypt - Egypt uncovered three tunnels near the Rafah crossing on its border with the Gaza Strip Saturday and seized weapons and explosives in the strategic Sinai peninsula, according to security sources.
Police uncovered two tunnels in Barahma north of the Rafah border crossing and a third tunnel south of the crossing, the sources said. Quantities of fuel were found in the tunnels, the sources added without giving further details.
Police also found TNT explosives in Hilwa near the town of Arish in northern Sinai, and nine automatic rifles and ammunition in Muqdaba, in the centre of the peninsula.
Israel has been pressing Egypt to stem weapons smuggling into the Gaza Strip via Sinai. Egyptian authorities regularly uncover weapons caches and tunnels there.

At least five people were killed on Saturday in an explosion in central Saada, a town in northwest Yemen at the heart of a Shia revolt. According to a witness, the blast near Saada's post office left a number of people wounded. Rescue services evacuated the casualties as security forces sealed off the site. Yemen's Saada province in the mountains on the border with Saudi Arabia has been the heartland of an uprising launched by Zaidi Shia rebels in 2004 in which thousands of people have died. The two sides signed a Qatari-brokered peace deal in June last year but there has been repeated wrangling about its implementation. The insurgents are known as Huthis after their late commander, Hussein Badr Eddin al-Huthi, who was killed by the army in September 2004. He was succeeded as field commander by his brother Abdul Malak. Yemen, one of the poorest countries outside of Africa, is also grappling with a violent campaign by Al Qaeda militants, dwindling oil and water resources, and unemployment.

Police sniffer dogs will have to wear bootees when searching the homes of Muslims so as not to cause offence.
Guidelines being drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) urge awareness of religious sensitivities when using dogs to search for drugs and explosives. The guidelines, to be published this year, were designed to cover mosques but have been extended to include other buildings.
Where Muslims object, officers will be obliged to use sniffer dogs only in exceptional cases. Where dogs are used, they will have to wear bootees with rubber soles. We are trying to ensure that police forces are aware of sensitivities that people can have with the dogs to make sure they are not going against any religious or cultural element within peoples homes. It is being addressed and forces are working towards doing it, Acpo said.
Problems faced by the use of sniffer dogs were highlighted last week when Tayside police were forced to apologise for a crime prevention poster featuring a german shepherd puppy, in response to a complaint by a Muslim councillor.
Islamic injunctions warn Muslims against contact with dogs, which are regarded as unclean.
Police dogs at present are issued with footwear only at scenes of explosions to prevent them injuring their paws on broken glass.
Ibrahim Mogra, one of Britains leading imams, said the measures were unnecessary: In Islamic law the dog is not regarded as impure, only its saliva is. Most Islamic schools of law agree on that. If security measures require to send a dog into a house, then it has to be done. I think Acpo needs to consult better and more widely.
I know in the Muslim community there is a hang-up against dogs, but this is cultural. Also, we know the British like dogs; we Muslims should do our bit to change our attitudes.
John Midgley, co-founder of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said: The police are in effect being overly sensitive to potential criminals and not being sensitive enough to the public at large who need to be protected. These sort of things have a counter-productive effect because they cause huge friction between different communities.
Caroline Kisko, of the Kennel Club, said: We would not condone any attempt to make search dogs wear special clothing, which could cause them distress.
I've had it with government forcing the majority to the minority views and beliefs. Ask yourself Britain why the fascist parties are gaining so much support from the population.

the veil and covering for women is mandated in islam except when not. honor killings are sanctioned in islam except when they're not. dogs are deemed impure in islam except when not. the infidel is required to remove shoes upon entering a mosque, but the infidel dog must put them on.

Colombia found explosives set to be used in bombs across the capital in reprisal for this week's rescue of leftist rebels' highest-profile hostages, including Ingrid Betancourt, military officials said on Saturday. "We must have Dire Revenge™!"
The army seized about a ton of explosives at a farm outside Bogota that it suspected the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, planned to use in attacks over the next few days, said the officials, who asked not to be named.

No casualities were reported during the one-hour attack, which started at 2am. The rockets landed near Jamrud Bazaar. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. According to the channel, the police also arrested three people in a raid at a godown in Muridke and recovered 31 cartons of explosives. The government has extended the suspension of the operation in Bara region for an indefinite period as Mangal Bagh - head of Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) - 'surrendered' to government demands, Khyber Agency Political Agent (PA) Tariq Hayat Khan said on Saturday. 'He (Bagh) has surrendered to all our demands and the operation shall now remain suspended,' Hayat told Daily Times following talks with jirga members who returned from a meeting with the LI chief in the remote Tirah Valley on Friday.
The demands include a guarantee in writing by Bagh to maintain good behaviour along with a payment of cash, surrender of weapons, release of all hostages and a ban on the display of weapons in public. Hayat said his administration would hold further talks with the jirga members on Sunday (today) to work out modalities for the implementation of security in the area.
Denial: Muhammad Ali, an official in charge of a crisis management centre set up by the government in Peshawar to monitor the offensive, said however it was still under way, though 'in a mild tone', reported AP.
No list of demands: Hayat's statement that Bagh had 'surrendered to the government terms' was however in conflict with a jirga member's statement, which said no side had given them, as intermediaries, any list of demands. 'The government gave the jirga no list of demands for Bagh,' jirga member Shaukat Khan Afridi told a news conference in Bara, adding, 'Nor had Bagh preconditioned talks with the government.'
Afridi said both sides had authorised the jirga to negotiate a settlement to the issue. Hayat said the government had not held any talks, direct or indirect, with Bagh. 'The Afridi tribe's jirga did not negotiate for a settlement nor did the government.'

SRINAGAR - At least 30 people were injured in clashes with police after thousands of angry protesters gathered outside a shrine housing Islamic relics that caught fire yesterday in Indian administered Kashmirs largest city.
The blaze sparked fresh religious tensions in the Muslim-majority Himalayan region, which has already seen days of violent protests over plans to transfer land to a Hindu pilgrims body, as rumours spread that police had set the fire.
Police said the fire at the shrine in Srinagar was accidental. Initial reports suggest that the fire was caused by a short circuit, said a police officer. We brought the fire under control, he said, calling the rumours baseless and misleading.
All the centuries-old relics at the shrine were safe, he added.
But news of the fire at the Jenab Sahib shrine, which is said to house a relic of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), drew thousands of Muslims onto the surrounding streets, shouting Allah is great and Long live Islam.
Police fired in the air, set off tear-gas shells and baton-charged the crowd that was pelting stones at security forces outside the shrine after some of the demonstrators tried to snatch rifles from the police. Protesters also hurled stones at a nearby paramilitary police camp and at a local police station, witnesses said. Some 30 people, including eight journalists, five policemen and six firemen were injured in the melee, police said.
Our correspondent adds: Kashmir Valley, particularly summer capital Srinagar, yesterday again witnessed pitched battles between irate mobs and the police during a one-day strike called by separatist Hurriyat Conference alliance against Friday's police assault on one of its leaders Syed Shabir Ahmed Shah. Shah who was hit by a policeman with a bamboo stick as he along with his supporters emerged from Hazratbal shrine after addressing a Friday congregation is recuperating in a city hospital.
Most shops and other businesses in Srinagar and some other Valley towns were closed. However, skeleton transport services plied on the roads.

American and Iraqi forces are driving Al-Qaeda in Iraq out of its last redoubt in the north of the country in the culmination of one of the most spectacular victories of the war on terror.
After being forced from its strongholds in the west and centre of Iraq in the past two years, Al-Qaedaâs dwindling band of fighters has made a defiant âlast standâ in the northern city of Mosul.
A huge operation to crush the 1,200 fighters who remained from a terrorist force once estimated at more than 12,000 began on May 10.
Operation Lionâs Roar, in which the Iraqi army combined forces with the Americansâ 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, has already resulted in the death of Abu Khalaf, the Al-Qaeda leader, and the capture of more than 1,000 suspects.
The group has been reduced to hit-and-run attacks, including one that killed two off-duty policemen yesterday, and sporadic bombings aimed at killing large numbers of officials and civilians.

Iraq's prime minister said Saturday that the government has defeated terrorism in the country, a sign of growing confidence after recent crackdowns against Sunni extremists and Shiite militias. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki launched the crackdowns to extend the authority of the government over areas in Baghdad and elsewhere that have largely been under the control of armed groups since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. According to the sources, the LTTE camp is one of the strategic satellite bases of the rebels' main "One Four Base" complex situated inside the Mulaithiuvu jungle in the north.
Troops marching towards North of Janakapura, into Mulaithiuvu, succeeded after three days of fierce fighting, the ministry said. The structure of the base extends over 200 square metres that includes several underground bunkers.
In other clashes, troops killed an LTTE cadre and wounded two others in a confrontation, it said adding six LTEE rebels were killed and five others injured in an encounter at North Kiribbanwewa area in Welioya. The army also captured a LTTE bunker after injuring eight tiger rebels in the region, it said.
A soldier was wounded while on duty when an anti personnel mine exploded in Ampaddankulam area in North-western Mannar yesterday, the ministry said. Two LTTE cadres were killed and another injured by troops in the same area later in the day.
Meanwhile, two tiger rebels were shot dead when troops launched an attack in Kiriththivu in Mannar yesterday, the military said. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Iranian commander says a US attempt to invade Iran would only leave a frail and shaky structure from a 'torn to shreds' America.
Iran's Armed Forces are fully prepared for an immediate reaction to any offensive on Iranian territory, said Deputy Head of the Armed Forces Headquarters, Brigadier General Seyyed Masoud Jazayeri on Sunday.
"Iran has a comprehensive strategy to intercept invaders and to make the enemy suffer greatly," Jazayeri cautioned.
He said the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Iran's military have the strongest resolve to defend the Iranian borders, adding that, "What will remain after a foreign invasion against Iran is a frail and shaky structure of a torn-to-shreds America."
Referring to Washington's numerous failed plots against Iran, Gen. Jazayeri said 'the US has learned that no military measures would ever be successful' against the Islamic Republic.
"This is why the United States has resorted to psychological warfare, cultural inroads, and economic pressure against Iran," he added.
Jazayeri said if Americans were made aware of the numerous US attempts to topple Iran's government and meddle in the country's internal affairs, they would demand their government to adopt new policies.

One of their leaders spoke of America having "200 points of vulnerability" that could be attacked at any time. Iran's biggest military assets are : American Muslims and the American media. Members of the latter are fanatic believers in the lie that jihad means: personal struggle. The former know the truth of Muslim jihad obligations to work until "allah alone" is worshipped by mankind. Those are huge assets.

Well, now a days, Americans are all divided and the media is in a full court press to keep us that way, especially in the present farce called the Presidential Elections.
However, a real serious attack on our so-called f*cked up country by Iran or some proxies would unleash a counterattack so brutal that there would be nothing left of Gen. Jazayen's assets. Or his a$$. If he wants to fight us, he better stick to the thousand cuts routine if he expects a favorable outcome.

I think what Gen. Jazayeri is saying is that 2/3 of the Ameican public is currently "against" the war in Iraq. He makes the assumption (reasonably) that an American attack on Iran would be even more divisive. Given what would happen to the price of oil, I think he might be right.
What Gen. Jazayeri fails to appreciate is that the USA will rebound from the ensuing economic storm (percipitated by war) within a decade of an attack on Iran by the USA. In contrast, by the middle of the 21st century Iran will look back and consider the 16th century to be the good old days.
(1) IIRC, at the outset of war for independence with GB, only about 1/3 of all colonists were on the side of liberty (pro war). The rest didn't want war and could've live with the status quo. Meaning 2/3's of the American public had to be pulled kicking and screaming to freedom. Not much has changed.
(2) Speaking of Iran, the lady models used to advertise the "iranian.com personals" here at RB are hot. I espcially like the one featured often where God sayeth: "I will give you a GREAT body and lovely face, but you'll need a nose job to be a 10." The men here know who I mean.....

They need to realize one effect of their effrots in Iraq:
We have learned out lesson: We will not invade and reconstruct.
We will simply destroy their military and government in place, and leave them to sort the mess out while we seal the borders. And if we destroye civil infrastructure in the process, oh well, thems the breaks. Starve.
Hey Iran, if you ask really nicely, the Iraqis might lend you a hand rebuilding, and the Kurds will take over the north for you, and the Gulf States will settle and control the parts near Hormuz, and the Afghan government might help the areas on thier border. Oh, and the Shia sites will be well managed by Sistani and the Iraqi elders, who run Shia's most holy sites.
The central persian parts can go to hell, and most certainly will.
We are not interested in conquest at all, just destruction of the Islamist regime and its military lackeys. Once that's gone you're on your own in the 12th century whre you wanted to be. F**k You. The only blood shed will be Persian.
