For the next few months, Afghan and NATO troops will be out in the snow and bad weather, raiding villages where Taliban are hunkered down for the Winter. For U.S. troops, this is a 19th century tactic, pioneered by American General George Crook, to defeat the hostile tribes on the Great Plains. For the last four years, many American commanders have been trying to emulate Crook in other ways as well.
During the height of the Indian Wars in the American west, one of the most successful American commanders was general George Crook. He was an original thinker who used a combination of imagination and diplomacy to bring the wars to an end with a minimum of bloodshed. Crook's job was to pacify the tribes that still raided (as a form of sport or retribution for slights real or imagined) Indians and non-Indians alike. Crook also had to move tribes to reservations, or force them back there. But the main task of general Crook's troops was to keep the peace on a still turbulent frontier. Faced with the possibility of operating in Afghanistan, a rugged area populated by less well equipped, but more rugged and robust locals, it's a good idea to look back at how general Crook handled a similar situation.
First, general Crook saw diplomacy as his primary weapon. The Indians knew he had a more powerful military force, but they also knew Crook could be trusted. Crook used this trust, and his negotiating skills, to carry out American policies that he often didn't agree with. But Crook was also eager to avoid violence as much as possible. He was not a bloody minded soldier, and he realized that a reputation for senseless violence would make many of the tribes resist more stoutly and refuse to negotiate. Crook would recognize a similar situation in Afghanistan today. There is more to lose and little to gain by using a lot of fire power. You have to convince the Afghans that you do have the firepower, and can use it, but will only do so when there really is no other choice.
Using Indians to fight Indians was another technique Crook used a lot. First, he hired a lot of Indians as scouts. This made a lot of sense, as many of his troops were from back east and didn't know the local terrain, languages and customs. Crook saw to it that the scouts were treated well, for the scouts were usually recruited from weaker tribes that had a beef with the stronger tribes. The smaller tribes were usually easier to negotiate deals with. The larger tribes would often fight and Crook needed the scouts, and Indian allies (who sometimes fought for him). Same situation in Afghanistan.
Many of the Afghan tribes and ethnic groups (Pushtuns versus everyone else) don't like each other very much. The government has gotten a number of tribes to become friendly, and some of those that now support the Taliban do it either because of existing disagreements with the government, or other tribes, or because the Taliban are successful in using terror.
Crook also showed a lot of innovation on the battlefield. While "asymmetric" warfare is a hot item today, it was a common tool for general Crook. Asymmetric means using weapons and techniques that the enemy cannot easily deal with. For the Afghans, this means knowing the terrain better and being more capable of moving across the hills and mountains. Crook had the same problem, in that the tribes knew their backyard better and their grass fed ponies could move faster than his cavalry (which depended on supplies of grain to feed his larger horses.) But Crook also realized that in the Winter the Indians had to settle in to survive the bad weather, and their ponies were forced to survive as best they could (and many didn't). Crook could move around in the Winter, by using many horses to carry supplies. While Crook's force was small and tied to their supplies, the Indians could hardly move at all, and usually succumbed to Crook's offer of bullets or bread. Protecting their families was always a top priority for the Indians and Crook would also, during Summer campaigns, strive to capture the women and children of a rebellious tribe. This improved his negotiating position immensely.
One can only speculate what general Crook would do in Afghanistan today, but he would likely cut deals with Afghans willing to deal. And there are always some Afghans willing to deal. Crook would look at the forces available to him and try to use his advantages (reconnaissance and air transport.) To succeed in Afghanistan, think like Crook.

Nothing will happen until we start torching the villages in the NWFP and related areas. We have to hurt the Pashtuns badly enough they want to quit, and we need to give them a way to quit without losing too much face - or too many people. The status quo isn't going to work for either side.

Afghan and foreign troops clashed with Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan on Friday, killing seven rebels in a battle involving war planes, mortars and gunfire, the US-led coalition said.
Separately the coalition said it had arrested 11 terrorists in a raid in an eastern province. The day-long battle was near Sperwan Ghar, an area in Kandahar province which has seen several major clashes between Taliban and security forces. A coalition soldier was also wounded in the engagement, the US-dominated force said in a statement.
The coalition said in a separate statement meanwhile that its troops working with Afghan forces had captured 11 terrorists Friday in a raid on a compound in the volatile eastern province of Khost. The raid was launched on credible intelligence and terrorist propaganda was found, it said.
NATO and Afghan forces are fighting the Taliban in different areas of Afghanistan, especially those on the border with Pakistan.

Mogadishu - Somalia's Islamic Courts said on Saturday that it had poured thousands of fighters and heavy equipment into frontline positions as they braced for clashes with the weak government and its Ethiopian allies.
"Aye, lads! If 'tis war they want, 'tis war we'll give 'em!"
The courts said it had reinforced areas outside the government seat of Baidoa, about 250km northwest of Mogadishu, anticipating imminent attack and accusing neighbouring Ethiopia of sending air power.

"We are completely ready here in the frontlines and keeping inside our trenches," court military chief Sheikh Muktar Robow told AFP.

"We are facing Ethiopian invaders. The only thing we expect is the start of battle. The Ethiopians have brought warplanes, including helicopters, and even heavy tanks to Baidoa and they are intending to wage an attack against us and we are ready for that."

The courts and the Ethiopian-backed government have been girding for all-out war near Baidoa for weeks, since the collapse of peace talks earlier this month. Both have stepped up preparations in recent days.

Camps 20km apart
The courts have declared holy war on Ethiopian troops in Somalia protecting the transitional government. Robow said his fighters had full confidence in winning the battle against the "forces of the devil".

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told the Somali parliament on Thursday that Addis Ababa had taken the necessary preparations for war with the courts, which he accused of posing a "clear and present danger" to his country.

Fighters from all sides are encamped at positions less than 20km apart, near the court-held towns of Mode Mode and Burhakaba areas.

"I have never seen such a huge number of fighters around Burhakaba," said resident Osman Ibarahim Rafiyo. If we really want to fight this WOT and not have to do all the "boots on the ground" by ourselves, if we really want allies around the world to stand up agianst the Radical Islamist this is our Chance.
We should work with Ethiopia with some SOF and our air support. We could stay quite and like in Afghanistan have our SOF desinate the enemy for our Air Power. Camps 20km apart means those Ethiopean troops know were the ICU strong points are those 50"technicals" pickups with 50cal on the bed would decimated in the opening hours. The Ethiopeans could follow that up and route the ICU just like the N Alliance did the Taleban. We could do that with minimal if any casualties and the only real expence would be the bombs dropped (minor if you think the cost when we are forced to pay if the Ethiopeans fail and we have to send in Boots & Air Power.
Such a move would send a clear message if you are willing to fight the Islamic Radicals we are willing to lend some of our Air Power and resources to help you win.

Send a couple of those carrier battle groups to take out the mosques in Somalia, and the entire "war" will end in a few hours. Destroy as many Somali "troops" as possible - go back to killing people and breaking things, the way to win wars. Let the Ethiopians clean up what's left.

Hell, we don't even need troops in that area : what Ethiopia needs more than anything else is a major boost to its spares inventories and airlift capabilities. Both of which could easily be supplied by Eastern Europeans, paid through CIA front companies. This is one of the capabilities that Carter and Clinton ruined in the CIA : the ability to conduct wars through cut-outs and false fronts. The spares could be purchased from any of the friendlies in Poland, Czech Repub, Slovakia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania; and the airlift could easily come from the Ukrainian mercs that operated the heavy lift aircraft and Hinds left behind by the Soviets.
At most, we would need to TDY some of the SF in Djibouti to the Ethiopian sector in Somalia for a few weeks -- need good FACs to direct the Ukrainian Hind strikes.

The "pray-in" is in response to US Airways' removal of Imam Omar Shahin and five other Imams traveling from a terror supporting religious leader's conference in Minnesota. Three of the Imams were observed praying prior to departure. Subsequent to boarding the plane, the six were removed from the flight, handcuffed, and detained in the airport for questioning for over five hours. Upon release, US Airways and other airlines refused to allow them to purchase tickets for other scheduled flights to Phoenix.

God does not require five former prayers a day. If you are picking travel on a day that is the Sabbath,(Shabbot), May as not well at all travel. And if you think you can require travel to accompany your prayer needs, you are mistaken. I, being the immoral being I seem to be to these muslems, can pray withought anyone seeing it - who would have thunk it? Amazing that God does not have to SEE you pray five times a day to get something done. I say US Airways is a Godly airline and God does not need Muslems to show their faith that way after 9-11.

Suspected tribal militants kidnapped around 22 men, including engineers and technicians working on the Kachhi Canal Project, during a raid on a camp at the project site in Sui tehsil of Dera Bugti district on Friday. The kidnappers also burnt nine tractors and a bulldozer, which were being used in the construction of the canal, before fleeing with their hostages. The abducted people did not resist the kidnappers, a source said. However, a high-raking government official said the kidnappers burned only one tractor. He refused to give the exact number of those kidnapped. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. In a related development, security forces launched a massive search in Bhambore Hills to hunt for the kidnappers.
Separately, official sources claimed that four activists of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) had been arrested in connection with the terrorist activities in Quetta and elsewhere in Balochistan. The arrests were made by a special team of the Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) which had arrived in Quetta for the task, the sources said, adding that those arrested were identified as Dil Murad, Sadad, Shahdad and Yousaf. Meanwhile, police said that they had arrested three Afghan nationals on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks in Balochistan, while also recovering a large explosives cache.

According to both sources, the helicopters opened fire on sectors 21 and 22 in Al-Kiyara area in Sadr city which is considered a stronghold for supporters of Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr. Among the injured were a woman and a boy, who were sent to Imam Ali ibin Abi Taleb hospital for treatment, added the sources.
Sadr city witnessed a series of explosions yesterday which resulted in the death of about 202 citizens and the injury of 250 others. Although a curfew was imposed by the government to prevent attacks from occurring, several Iraqi cities witnessed different kinds of attacks which resulted in the death and injury of 90 Iraqis.

(KUNA) -- US Forces in Iraq killed four militants in Tarmiyah town north of Baghdad, while Iraqi Police arrested 65 others, it was reported here Friday. In a press release, the US Army said that as its forces made their way to a target building in Tarmiyah, militants opened fire from a nearby mosque. The forces returned fire, killing four of the militants. The forces later arrested six militants in raids in the same town, the release added.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi Interior Ministry announced Anbar border forces arrested 65 militants; 56 Iraqis, five Palestinians, three Syrians, and a Sudanese, and confiscated official seals and an illegal car number plate found in their possession.

Israel and the Palestinians agreed to a cease-fire Saturday to end a five-month Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip and the firing of rockets by Palestinian militants into the Jewish state, officials from the two sides said. The cease-fire was to go into effect at 6 a.m. Sunday (11 p.m. Saturday EST), both sides said.
The agreement was reached after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert late Saturday to tell him that all Palestinian militant groups had pledged to stop rocket attacks but not any other kind of attacks into Israel, Olmert spokeswoman Miri Eisin said. She said Abbas asked that Israel reciprocate by stopping its military operations in Gaza and withdrawing its forces, and Olmert agreed.
Nabil Abu Rdeneh, an Abbas spokesman, later confirmed that Palestinian armed factions including those allied to the Hamas militant group had agreed to stop their military activities in Gaza and reinstate a truce reached in Egypt in February 2005. "There is a signed agreement between the president and Prime Minister (Ismail) Haniyeh and all the Palestinian factions to resort to the agreement of the factions in Cairo in 2005, including ceasing all the military activity from Gaza, starting from Sunday morning," Abu Rdeneh said. "The Israeli prime minister has agreed, and it is going to start tomorrow morning." Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, call me Olmert.

(KUNA) -- Palestinian factions continued on Friday missile attacks on Isreli settlements North of Gaza in a retaliatory measure for the occupation army's wide military operations in Gaza Strip. Meanwhile three Palestinian factions said in separate statements issued here today that Israeli settlements were targets of more missile attacks.
The Qassam brigades, the military wing for the Islamic Hamas movement, said two "Qassam" rockets were fired at the Israeli Southern settlement of Sderot late last night. The al Quds brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, also said a medium-range rocket code-named "al Quds" was fired on the same settlement at dawn Friday. Israel's army reported today that two rockets that were fired from the Northern parts of Gaza Strip have slammed into the settlement of Sderot inflicting damages to its commercial centre.
I occasionally wonder what would happen if the Israeli government provided the citizens of Sderot with simple rockets and explosives and told them to go ahead and launch them in the general direction of Gaza. I'm sure there would be an international outcry, but at least they'd be trading rockets with the Paleos instead of just standing on the receiving end like sheep.

A noted religious Zionist rabbi has advocated arming ungoverned civil defense groups in western Negev communities to fight back against Kassam rocket attacks from northern Gaza.
Rabbi Yisrael Rosenne, director of the Tzomet Technology and Jewish Law Institute in Alon Shvut, says that arming civilians and permitting them to fire back at the terrorists would be a proper way to stop the attacks from terrorizing residents in southern Israel "if the government were in 'Jewish' - and not necessarily religious - hands."

Peretz is some defense minister. Isn't Sderot his home town? Sheeit, mon. Missiles slam into his neighbor's house and he does nothing? This guy has no survival instinct. The Israeli people better do something about Olmert and Co, and quick. Gaza is hostile and becoming very frisky, and southern Lebanon is back up to its prewar strength, or is becoming so, with the help of the French and UNIFIL forces.
There WILL be another war and Israel will be backed into a corner. Syria is becoming stronger, due to the weakness of Israel and the US. And Israel TALKS of targetting leaders in surgical strikes. That worked real well. It is crunch time. The Islamists smell weakness and they are exploiting it. They don't have much in their playbooks but they are using what they have. We have the technology, materiel, logistics, and personnel, and we use barely a fraction of our assets. We don't have the collective will to do what is necessary to survivie. So who are the smart ones here?

Start cutting services provided to Paleos for every rocket fired. First shut off the hyedro. Second rocket, turn of the water. Then deny access to any hospital. Cut acces to jobs, education, any doctor. Halt food.
For every seven days without attqack, restore 1 service. Then remove it the next day whan another rocket flies in.
Paleo's should not accept any service from a country they won't recognize. No "recognizing" water, hydro, food, etc.

It happened today, the Philippine Armed Forces (AFP) got a huge catch in the War on Terror! Remember the group of hostages that was taken by the Abu Sayyaf in June of 2001? Thats the same group that included Martin and Gracia Burnham, the American Missionary couple that was held by the Abu Sayyaf. In the end, Martin was killed by his captors, while Gracia was injured, but able to return alive to the United States. At that time, another of the American Hostages, Guillermo Sobrero was beheaded by his Abu Sayyaf captors.
Well, today, the AFP nabbed the very suspect that beheaded Guillermo Sobrero, a huge win in the War on Terror. If the news gets coverage in the United States, I am certain that a lot of Americans will cheer this and consider it a huge win for the Government of the Philippines.
Heres the story, as told by the Inquirer:
Military intelligence agents have arrested the Abu Sayyaf leader who allegedly decapitated American hostage Guillermo Sobero in June 2001, the military said Saturday.
Major Eugene Batara, spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said Annik Abbas alias Abu Anek was arrested on Friday evening in Colonia village in Lamitan, Basilan.
Abbass victim, Sobero, was among 21 persons including American couple Martin and Gracia Burnham taken from the Dos Palmas resort in Palawan during a raid by the group of bandits in May 2001.
Soberos execution was announced by Abu Sayyaf spokesperson Abu Sabaya two weeks after the abduction. We have beheaded Sobero as a gift to the country on Independence Day, Sabaya told a local radio station then. Soberos body was found about three weeks later, also in Basilan.
Batara said Abbad did not resist arrest. Abbas was on his way to Sinangkapan village in Tuburan town when he was spotted by two of our men, Batara said. Abbas was unarmed and alone when arrested according to Batara.
Basilan Governor Wahab Akbar described Abbas as the most dangerous Abu Sayyaf. He was the executioner of American hostage Guillermo Sobero way back 2001, he said.
Akbar said Abbas was previously arrested but managed to escape from prison during the 2004 jail break in Basilan. He rejoined the Abu Sayyaf and was named commander of the group previously under Hamsiraji Sali, who was killed by soldiers in 2003, according to Akbar.
I am giving P1 million to the civilian informants who helped the Armys 103rd Infantry Brigade in his arrest, the Basilan governor said.
On Thursday evening, police intelligence operatives also killed an Abu Sayyaf member during an operation here.
Superintendent Angelito Casimiro, police intelligence chief for Western Mindanao, said his men were serving a warrant of arrest against Itting and Anni Sailani, who were being sought for the death of former Inquirer photographer Gene Boyd Lumawag, in Ayala village here.
But the serving of warrant ended in a gun fight at the Ayala bridge when the group resisted. This led to the death of Joselito Nasara alias Abu Sufian, Sofia, and Kirrs, Casimiro said.
The Sailani brothers, he said, managed to escape.
During a follow up operation in Pamucutan village here, Casimiro said, policemen arrested Jayrold Nasara, younger brother of the slain Abu Sayyaf member, and another suspect, identified as Salahuddin Asikain Ogis.
Police seized .45 caliber pistol, an M-16 Armalite rifle and ammunition, a motorbike, a cellular phone, a machete, and personal belongings, according to Casimiro
Casimiro said the police remained on high alert following reports the Abu Sayyaf was planning to sow terror in the city.
In Jolo, Sulu, Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. ordered soldiers to get ranking Abu Sayyaf leaders, including Khadaffy Janjalani, and Indonesian bomb experts Dulmatin and Omar Patek before Christmas.

Hundreds of schools in Thailand's restive south will shut their doors in response to increasingly vicious attacks by suspected Muslim insurgents against teachers and schools, a regional education representative said.
The closure, which begins Monday, affects all 336 primary and secondary schools in the province of Pattani, where two teachers were shot and killed by suspected insurgents in the past two days. In one of the killings, attackers shot a school principal Friday, and then set his body on fire.
"Teachers can't bear what has happened," said Bunsom Thongsriprai, president of Teachers' Association in Pattani. "They are paranoid, worried and afraid." He said the schools will reopen when teachers feel safe.
More than 1,800 people have died from violence in Thailand's three southernmost, Muslim-majority provinces - Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat - since an Islamic insurgency flared up in January 2004.

Everybody knows what must be done, even the fools and tools. This is in the King's lap, his call, and the Thais will follow his lead. So will he lead is what remains. This murder should be gruesome enough (any murder should be, but people are freaks) to get a response. If not, then Thailand is lost - at least as long as Bhumibol lives.
I've been gone for almost 3 years, so my info may be out of date, but... His son, from all accounts from my Thai friends in Chiang Mai, is an ass and the people know it. His daughter, however, is a public-spirited class act and is revered. Succession goes to the son, traditionally, but there was talk while I was there that the people would like to see it ignored in favor of the daughter.
So if Bhumibols doesn't respond and his son takes over, then Thailand is truly screwed.

I couldn't agree more, phil_b. Thailand is the one place I would seriously consider settling in, outside of the US. If they hadn't become insanely greedy under Toxin, regards exPats, I probably would have done so - but he instituted a whole mess of rapidly-changing schemes meant to enrich the Thai Govt and screw any exPat with the requisite cash who wanted to stay there.
It was remarkably self-defeating - I (and many thousands of others like me) am not there spending my money any more - and never will be again. Thailand's loss - people like me were pure profit, there was zero outlay for services while I spent freely to their benefit.
It defines stupid - and is yet another of the reasons I believe we should implement a simple foreign policy of precisely reciprocal treatment (visas, freedom, taxes, etc) with each country.

There's a story posted at Jihad Watch this morning concerning Thailand. This latest murder of the school principal got somebody's attention in the Dept. of Education. The Thai gov't has ordered the closing of 300 schools in the southern provinces effective Monday. Duration: indefinite.

The visa laws have changed so dramatically over the last 5 years it's amazing - and it is far more complex than I'd like to engage in here. If you're interested, you can get infor from the Thai Govt site, but note that:
1) even the 30-day visas (Transit - used to be 15) and 60-day (Tourist - used to be 30) are not as advertised - don't apply to US which is limited to 30 and they do not allow consecutive entry (i.e. leave country, re-enter, get new 30 day visa) - you have to stay out for 30 days to re-enter under either, last I heard - and they are not easily extended, anymore...
2) almost every "program" has undergone changes in the last year or two. So you can make plans to day and find it's obsolete before you can complete the paperwork.
Since I have been gone for 3 years, I'll wager that the schemes have changed numerous times since I last tangled with them. What they are pushing is the OA Visa - expensive, one year duration, requires proof of significant income, and that a substantial amount be depositied in Thai bank, etc.

Renewed fighting in Sri Lankas embattled northern and eastern regions has left at least 30 people dead, according to defence ministry figures Friday. Security forces killed 19 Tamil Tiger rebels in two clashes Thursday in the eastern district of Batticaloa where four policemen also died, the ministry said. It said the guerrillas had also shot dead two civilians in the east on the same day and five Tiger guerrillas were shot dead in a confrontation in the northern Vavuniya district.
The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said they lost only one combatants in the islands east Thursday and accused the military of killing a student and wounding five others. No independent verification of casualty claims was possible amid ongoing clashes between the two sides.
Sri Lankas president on Friday asked foreign relief agencies to help supply food and other essentials to half a million civilians trapped in the embattled northern Jaffna peninsula.

Hizbullah has been successful in restocking their missile supply after last summer's war with Israel, diplomatic sources in Beirut told Time magazine Friday.
According to the report, Hizbullah currently has an estimated 20,000 short-range rockets. The report contradicted an Israeli estimate in which Hizbullah was said to have acquired only half the number of rockets that they had before the war.
During the war with Israel, Hizbullah fired over 3,000 rockets.
Sources in Saudi Arabia claimed that Iran and Syria were behind the rearmament, supplying the guerilla organization with enough ammo to return to its former strength. "The arms pipeline from Iran through Syria started to function even during the war," one source in Beirut said.
Officials in Iran and Syria continued to deny the claim that they provided Hizbullah with arms. It was magik. Y'know, djinns.

The missiles are easy. The multimillion dollar bunkers, command centers and infrastructure took years to build, and it is all shot to hell. And that doesn't even include all of their regular buildings in the Hezbollah side of Beirut.

Not sure gromgoru. The US does have the habit of trying to keep the IDF on a short leash, like in GW1, when Sammy was slamming SCUDS into Israel, and she was not allowed to defend herself. Too bad Israel was not allowed to do what she needed to do to take out the threat. Now we have gone 15 years since GW1 and everyone is backed into a corner, both US and Israel.

(KUNA) -- US Forces in Iraq killed four militants in Tarmiyah town north of Baghdad, while Iraqi Police arrested 65 others, it was reported here Friday. In a press release, the US Army said that as its forces made their way to a target building in Tarmiyah, militants opened fire from a nearby mosque. The forces returned fire, killing four of the militants. The forces later arrested six militants in raids in the same town, the release added.

Renewed fighting in Sri Lankas embattled northern and eastern regions has left at least 30 people dead, according to defence ministry figures Friday. Security forces killed 19 Tamil Tiger rebels in two clashes Thursday in the eastern district of Batticaloa where four policemen also died, the ministry said.
