A major attack was launched south of Mazar-e-Sharif, with heavy Taliban casualties.
Anti-Taliban forces said they launched a major attack Sunday in a strategic district south of the Taliban-held city of Mazar-e-Sharif after U.S. jets pounded the area earlier in the day. Opposition spokesman Ashraf Nadeem said the attack in Balkh province was a joint operation involving Uzbek warlord Rashid Dostum, Atta Mohammed of the Jamiat-e-Islami faction and Shiite Muslims led by Mohammed Mohaqik. The three were among opposition Northern Alliance leaders who met last weekend to plan for a major assault on Mazar-e-Sharif before the beginning of the Islamic holy month Ramadan this month and the advent of winter.
Nadeem said he expected heavy fighting over the control of Kishanday district in Balkh province, one of three key routes into Mazar-e-Sharif. If Kishanday falls, Nadeem predicted Taliban lines in the two other districts would collapse.

Wave upon wave of high-flying U.S. bombers carpet bombed this sector of northeastern Afghanistan Sunday, following the heaviest day of bombing since U.S. planes began hitting this area a week ago. Sunday's attacks were so heavy that at times it was difficult to count the number of explosions. The bombs landed on Taliban positions on a ridge along the front lines. Huge plumes of black smoke and thunderous explosions erupted, and villagers here rushed out of their homes to watch the planes in the sky. The most intense attack Sunday morning lasted for about 15 minutes. While many of the U.S. planes were bombers, at least two were reconnaissance aircraft. Four anti-aircraft shells were fired at them to no avail. (CNN, DASHTIQALA, Afghanistan)

Washington Post reports on the government's strategy of rounding up as many Middle Eastern men as possible to disrupt further al-Qaeda operations. Of 1,147 detained, officials have specifically singled out 185 who are being held on immigration charges. Another small number -- perhaps 10 -- are believed to lie at the center of the investigation, with ties to the al Qaeda network or some knowledge of the hijackers. But sources say none of those men is cooperating.

New York Post carries an article on American traitor Mohammad Junaid, who has gone to fight against his country in Afghanistan. He said his grandfather instilled in him the belief that "your loyalty is with Islam. Your loyalty is with the Muslims. Just because you're in New York, your loyalty is still with them."
Meanwhile, Steve Dunleavy's son, Pete, a lieutenant in the Army Reserve, left for overseas, hopefully to kill Junaid.

De facto Saudi Arabian leader Prince Abdullah is upset with the western press. "The vicious Western media attack against the Kingdom is only because of the ancient spite against Islam and Saudi Arabia's commitment to Islam," he recently opined... Prince Abdullah's publication last week of a letter he wrote to President Bush on Aug. 27 revealed the fear behind the Saudis' actions. In that letter, the prince warned the United States that a failure to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would lead to a rift between us and the Saudis. The letter said that ". . . it is time for the United States and Saudi Arabia to look at their separate interests." It goes on to say that, "Those [Arab] governments that don't feel the pulse of the people and respond to it will suffer the fate of the Shah of Iran." (WASHINGTON TIMES EDITORIAL)

The Saudi newspaper Okaz charged that the Israeli secret service Mossad was behind the September 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.
The mass-circulation Okaz said in an editorial that an attack on such a scale could not have been carried out with such accuracy and precision without the help of parties inside the United States or with strong links in Washington.
"Six Israelis suspected of involvement in the attacks on New York and Washington were arrested in the US, to be later released. This confirms our strong suspicions about the involvement of Israel's Mossad in the ugly crime," Okaz said.
"If we look carefully into this matter, we can find no more influential sides in the US than the Israeli Mossad agents, who have the ability to penetrate and the capability to execute with high efficiency," the daily said.
