[AlAhram] Egypt’s Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadek referred on Saturday 11 individuals to criminal court for carrying out an attack on a church in south Cairo in December 2017, which killed nine Copts and a policeman ahead of Coptic Christian Christmas celebrations last year.
In an official statement, the prosecution charged the defendants with "establishing and leading a Takfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... group, funding its members, and killing nine Christians and a policeman, and the attempted murder of another."
Security forces rubbed out one of the attackers
...the bearded dude in a suicide vest...
in an exchange of fire outside the church of Mar Mina,
... sometimes referred to as Saint Mina Coptic church in the district of Helwan...
while another assailant was tossed in the slammer Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up! The charges listed by the prosecution also include resisting police by force and violence, as well as manufacturing and possessing an bomb to be used to endanger people’s lives.
It also charged the defendants with seeking to join the terrorist group ISIS abroad to carry out terror acts in Egypt, as well as using websites to exchange messages and assignments to execute the terrorist activities.
The prosecution identified the leader of the group as Ibrahim Ismail Mostafa,
...he was the one who was shot while trying to get through the police guard on a motorcycle, carrying a bomb, machinegun, and ammunition after killing two at a nearby shop. He’s been described as “an active terrorist who has carried out a number of terrorist attacks targeting police and civilians since 2016,” suggesting a thick file at police headquarters...
currently in jug, as well as ten others.
...which suggests the others are not, at the moment, in police custody.
The attack in December 2017 came nearly a week ahead of preparations by Copts, who make up 10-15 percent of Egypt's 104 million population, to celebrate Christmas on 7 January.
[Al Jazeera] As Nigeria prepares for general elections in February, a series of attacks by Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... has focused attention on the security situation in the country.
The gang appears to have regained ground in the country's northeast in 2018, pushing into towns and villages it had previously lost to the Nigerian military.
With an escalation of attacks in recent months, the Nigerian government's claims of victory against Boko Haram appear premature.
The nine-year conflict with Boko Haram, that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced two million others from their homes in Nigeria, has also spread to neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon ...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there... As Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari embarks on a re-election bid, he has called for urgent measures to curtail the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks.
At an emergency meeting of leaders from the Lake Chad region on Thursday in Chad's capital, Ndjamena, Buhari urged them to not "cave in" to the attacks.
"The group's renewed strategy of increasingly mining the area as well as its recent deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance have proved to be critical factors in the resurgence of attacks in the region," Buhari said.
"These activities are aimed at weakening our collective resolve to eradicate them from the region," he said.

Khashoggi, a trenchant critic of the crown prince who relocated to Virginia and wrote op-eds for the Washington Post, was killed by Saudi operatives inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2, triggering global condemnation.

[JP] Hamas leader Ismael Haniyyeh was slated to arrive in Russia on Thursday, as the Kremlin seems to be wading into the Palestinian political foray that traditionally has been the diplomatic turf of the United States. This comes after Nabil Sha'ath, a senior adviser to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and Hussein al-Sheikh, a member of the Central Committee of Abbas' ruling Fatah faction who is responsible for overseeing reconciliation talks with rival Hamas, held discussions this week with officials in Moscow.
"There is a Russian effort to work on creating Palestinian unity, especially after the negative news that was published suggesting that a meeting held in Cairo was not fruitful," Sha'ath related to The Media Line from the Russian capital.

Fatah was a Soviet client, as I recall. But I don’t think Moscow will find a win here, though no doubt some something trumpeted as a breakthrough will be announced. Equally no doubt it will quickly turn out to have bren merely a hudna, just like all the breakthroughs Egypt has come up with.
Hundreds, maybe thousands, of Fatah partisans have been executed by Hamas and Fatah holds hundreds, maybe thousands, of Hamas partisans in prison and has probably tortured most of them. So unity is a tough sell.

[Al Jazeera] A self-imposed deadline by a university founded by US billionaire George Soros ...either Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Auric Goldfinger come true... to settle a legal dispute with the Hungarian government has passed, raising serious questions on academic freedom in the country.
Saturday marked the end of the embattled Central European University's (CEU) deadline to remain in Budapest, with the university now set to move its activities and start the 2019-2020 academic year in Vienna.
The move has been seen by students and some European politicians as a serious blow to a liberal bastion in Hungary, led by far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban's 's Fidesz party since 2010.
Soros, who promotes liberal causes through his charities, has been the subject of a campaign by Orban.
Earlier this year, his charity, Open Society Foundations, was forced to leave Hungary.

[Jpost] Once a holiday dream for middle-class Italians, Castel Volturno is now a dilapidated seaside nightmare where Nigerians open their homes to migrants colonists wanting cold beer and quick sex.
Called "connection houses," the rundown coastal homes serve as bedroom, bar and brothel to a migrant population with nowhere better to go. They are on the rise and their clandestine nature means Europe’s heavy influx of refugees and migrants colonists, be they fleeing war or poverty, can exist out of sight and beyond help.
The International Organization for Migration said about 55,000 migrants colonists had reached European shores in the first half of this year, many landing without papers, hope of a home or a job.

[Express.uk] A LEADING MEP has warned EU citizens they could be "incarcerated Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! " for criticising migration policies if a new United Nations ...where theory meets practice and practice loses... agreement is acted upon.
The United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration seeks to make immigration a universal human right. MEP Marcel de Graaff said: "I would like to say some words on the global compact on migration. On the 10th and 11th of December there will be an international congress in Marrakesh Morocco. The participating countries are set to sign this agreement and although this joint agreement is not binding it is still meant to be the legal framework on which the participating countries commit themselves to build new legislation.
"One basic element of this new agreement is the extension of the definition of hate speech.
"The agreement wants to criminalise migration speech. Criticism of migration will become a criminal offence.
"Media outlets that give room to criticism of migration can be shut down.
"The compact for migration is legalisation of mass migration.
“It is declaring migration as a human right so it will, in effect, become impossible to criticise Mrs Merkel’s welcome migrants politics without being at risk of being jailed for hate speech.”
Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Israel, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland have already stated they will not sign the agreement.
One of the “guiding principles” of the document asks for a “whole-of-society approach” to promoting mass migration, including the role of the media.
Governments are asked to “promote independent, objective and quality reporting… and stopping allocation of public funding or material support to media outlets that systematically promote intolerance, xenophobia, racism and other forms of discrimination towards migrants”.

"Understanding flow patterns in a confined vortex chamber is crucial when investigating the mechanisms of liquid-solid separation. The angular velocity of fluid motion around the vertical axis is a dominant parameter for determining fluid flow patterns and particle trajectories in a rotational flow field. In this paper, an angular velocity formula, based on the angular-impulse momentum principle coupled with the Rankine vortex model, is derived under steady flow conditions. Comparison of predicted results using this formula to experimental data from a previous study indicates a general agreement. The derived formula can be used to estimate the angular velocity of the rotational flow field in vortex separators with tangential inlet and without internal components."

Didn’t Italy recently get a new, conservative government? That would be enough to explain the changed attitude, james. If the thing was passed by 193 UN members, that would be the General Assembly, none of whose works are binding in any way. This is the only reason Israel has remained safe despite the frequent votes condemning or demanding this or that from them.
[Rudaw] Abu Hamza, an alleged ISIS official who confessed to parading 18 Peshmerga captives through Kirkuk’s Hawija in 2015, must be handed over to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the father of one Peshmerga captive said Saturday, citing mistrust of Baghdad.
"It is better for us if Abu Hamza is handed over to the [Kurdistan] Regional Government ... We suggest his handover to the Kurdistan Region because all the abuse against Peshmerga was committed by this man," Tariq Rafiq told Rudaw English.
The Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS) released a video confession by alleged ISIS official Jamal al-Mashhadani, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Hamza al-Kurdi, last week. The INIS did not say when he was tossed in the clink Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! "The Kurdistan Region owns the captives, and the Iraqi government has really not done anything for us," added Rafiq, whose son Aso is among the captives.
Rafiq accused the Iraqi government of detaining 45 Peshmerga, who had been ISIS captives. He called on the KRG to demand their release. Baghdad denies the claims.
Aso’s father expressed his mistrust of the Iraqi government, claiming "some ISIS officials have been released by Iraqi Army recently."
Abu Hamza reportedly held a number of key positions in the ISIS hierarchy, including chief of the group’s branches in Baghdad and later in Kirkuk.
"The terrorist played the main role in the commitment of a number of criminal operations which caused the sacrifice of the pure blood of Iraqis during their reign," read a statement from (INIS), simply dated "November".
He participated in the "bombardment of Taza area with chemical missiles and led a number of criminal attacks including the Hawija offensive which resulted in the abduction of five Peshmerga elements and attacks inside Kirkuk city’s Maktab Khaled and al-Basheer city," the statement added.
The alleged ISIS official said in his confession he had changed his title from Jamal al-Mashhadani to Abu Hamza al-Kurdi when he began working as the Wali of Kirkuk.
Abu Hamza also confessed to playing a key role in the offensive on Peshmerga forces in Kirkuk, ... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time... resulting in the capture of 18 Peshmerga in addition to three other already held by the group.
"As a result of the attack, we captured 18 Peshmerga elements in addition to another previous three captives. An order came to parade them through Hawija to elevate morale [of the fighters]," he said.
Born in 1973 in Baghdad, Abu Hamza graduated from the College of National Security in 1992, majoring in military security.
He was arrested and detained by US troops in 2006, giving him the chance to meet Islamic bully boyz like Abu Zaid, paving the way for his entry into the ranks of ISIS.
He move to Syria and then broke away from ISIS, fleeing to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor.... . Later he visited his son’s house in Baghdad, but was soon arrested by INIS.
Peshmerga officials would not comment on the case when approached by Rudaw English.
Kamal Kirkuki, head of Kirkuk’s western front against ISIS, said he was not in charge of the captured men, and therefore declined to comment.
Wasta Rasul, the commander of the captives, was unavailable for comment.
Jamal Eminki, commander in chief of the Peshmerga Ministry, said he was not aware of the arrest "due to lack of coordination" between Baghdad and Erbil.

[IsraelTimes] Secretary of state says Tehran violated UN resolution with test of ballistic missile capable of carrying more than one warhead, warns of ’risk of escalation in the region’.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday accused Iran of testing a medium-range ballistic missile capable of "carrying multiple warheads," which he said could strike "anywhere" in the Middle East and even parts of Europe.
In a statement, Pompeo said the missile test violated United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... Security Council Resolution 2231, which was adopted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal curbing Iran’s nuclear program and bans Iranian tests of nuclear-capable ballistic weapons.
He not specify when the test took place, but said it had "just" occurred.
"As we have been warning for some time, Iran’s missile testing and missile proliferation is growing. We are accumulating risk of escalation in the region if we fail to restore deterrence," Pompeo said.
He also called on Iran to "cease immediately all activities" related to the development of ballistic missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads.
The statement from Pompeo came just days after a top Iranian general claimed US military personnel and assets in the Middle East are within range of his country’s missiles.
Amirali Hajizadeh, the head of the air division for the hard-line Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, said improvements to Iran’s missile arsenal had put US bases in Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi... , the UAE, and Afghanistan within reach, as well as US aircraft carriers stationed in the Persian Gulf, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
"They are within our reach and we can hit them if the [Americans] make a move," he said, according to a translation of his remarks carried by Rooters.
Hajizadeh said the missiles had been outfitted with improved precision capabilities, making it possible to hit targets over 500 kilometers away to within 30 meters accuracy.
In September, Iran’s defense ministry said it planned it improve the capabilities of its ballistic and cruise missiles.
In 2017, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered limits on the country’s ballistic missile program to 2,000 kilometers. That range would encompass much of the Middle East, including Israel and American bases in the region. However, a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all... such limits come as Iran routinely says its ballistic missile program is only for defensive purposes against regional adversaries.
Although there are no restrictions in place on the range of Iranian missiles, US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... had insisted that limitations be placed on Tehran’s missile program, as a prerequisite for Washington remaining in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. He ultimately pulled out of it on May 12.
The US and its allies have been demanding that Iran curb its production of ballistic missiles, which can reach parts of Europe ...also known as Moslem Lebensraum... and could soon reach the US as well. Western officials have maintained that the only reason Tehran could have for manufacturing such missiles would be to fit them with non-conventional, including atomic, warheads.
Tehran, which calls for the destruction of Israel, insists that it sees the missile program as crucial to its defensive posture, and says its existence is non-negotiable. It has also maintained that it never intended to develop nuclear weapons and therefore its missile development does not violate the agreement.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iranian journalist and women’s rights activist Hengameh Shahidi has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on unspecified charges, the official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.
"Given the confidentiality of the proceedings and the security nature of the case I cannot disclose details about the court’s verdict," her lawyer Mostafa Turk Hamedani told IRNA.
He said Shahidi had received 12 years and nine months in prison, plus temporary bans on joining political groups, online or media activity, and leaving the country.
Shahidi was advisor on women’s affairs to reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi during the disputed 2009 presidential election, and has been a fierce critic of the judiciary for locking up journalists and activists.
Earlier jail sentences
When the 2009 election sparked rigging allegations and mass protests, she was locked up for three years on charges of propagating against the system, taking part in illegal gatherings and acting against national security.
Shahidi was detained again in 2017 for several months and accused of working for external media groups.
She later wrote open letters denouncing the charges as "baseless lies", while also criticizing reformist politicians for failing to support dissidents.
In May, a copy of her latest court summons was uploaded on her Twitter account, in which she was accused of "making insults".
When she was tossed in the slammer Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! the following month, Tehran’s chief prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said: "We saw that everyday she made blatant insults against the judiciary branch and officials by posting very criminal tweets," according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

[Rudaw] Iran has struck a bartering deal with South Korea to continue oil exports while avoiding United States sanctions, state media reported.
"According to the plan, goods will be given to Iranian importers and their price will be subtracted from the price of the oil exported to South Korea, and the importers will pay the price of the goods to the Iranian government,' Hossein Tanhaee, head of the Iran-South Korea Joint Chamber of Commerce, told IRNA on Saturday.
South Korea was granted one of eight waivers by Washington, giving it an extra 180 days to wean itself off of Iran’s oil before being subject to US sanctions. South Korea was one of the top buyers of Iranian crude, but it stopped imports in anticipation of the sanctions.
Tanhaee said that their respective private sectors can barter via this new mechanism ‐ a joint fund ‐ even if transactions at the central bank level are impossible.
Seoul has not immediately commented on the deal.
The main items traded between Iran and South Korea are Iranian oil and petrochemical products and Korean household appliances. Tanhaee said they could expand this with Iran exporting food, lead, and zinc and importing paper and cosmetics.
The US imposed sanctions on Iran’s oil sector earlier this month after withdrawing from the nuclear deal in May. The administration of Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... has labelled Iran a state sponsor of terror and wants to curtail Tehran’s regional activities.
