Encircled by faith leaders outside a Bronx mosque, Mamdani spoke in emotional terms about the "indignities" long faced by the city’s Moslem population, choking back tears as he described his aunt’s decision not to ride the subway after the September 11 attacks because she didn’t feel safe being seen in a religious head covering.
Earlier, appearing on a conservative radio station, Cuomo appeared to laugh along at host Sid Rosenberg’s suggestion that Mamdani would "be cheering" another 9/11 attack. "That’s another problem," Cuomo said in response to the host’s comment.
At a news conference later Friday, Cuomo accused Mamdani of "playing the victim" for political purposes and denied that Islamophobia ...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do... existed on a wide scale in New York.

Prosecutors charged three of the defendants with torching dumpsters in Jerusalem’s Rehavia neighborhood during a day of mass protests for the return of the hostages, while the fourth defendant, Foigel, is accused of organizing the attacks.

The State Attorney’s Office requested that three of the four defendants be placed under electronically supervised house arrest, except for Foigel, whom prosecutors sought to keep in jug for his role in planning the arson, calling him the "dominant actor" in the plot.
Representing the prosecution, attorney Assaf Swissa said that the incident was not a "standard arson case of setting fire to a far-flung trash bin or highway, nor a standard case of protest or disorderly conduct" — rather a carefully planned effort to threaten the state’s rule.

"Detention is not advanced in order to punish, even if it is protesters who made a mistake and carried out an offense that went beyond the limits of protest," said Alfasa after the hearing. "It is very easy to come to the conclusion that they aren’t dangerous to the public peace, and that it is possible to release them to house arrest."
Two of the suspects were arrested on September 3, the day of the incident, while the others were arrested two weeks later, and they have all remained behind bars since then.
The detainees were transferred from Ramle’s Nitzan Prison to Hadarim Prison in central Israel. The extended detentions of the defendants have sparked protests among fellow anti-government activists.
Representing Foigel, attorney Gaby Lasky questioned police in deciding to push for the suspects’ extended detention "specifically in this instance." She referenced the frequent dumpster fires lit by Haredi protesters during anti-draft demonstrations.
"Not far from here in the Geula neighborhood, people burn dumpsters night after night for an ideological reason: in order to dodge military service, exactly the inverse of the people sitting here," Lasky said, gesturing to the defendants.
As the hearing came to a close, family members in the courtroom went up to the podium one by one, and vowed to supervise the defendants and call the police if they violated the terms of their house arrest.

Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza requires Hamas to commit to disarmament, but the agreement signed by Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and mediators in Sharm el-Sheikh on October 9 does not address the demand.
Focusing on a separate part of Trump’s vision for Gaza, defense officials were reported to have told Israeli politicians last week that the International Stabilization Force, which is intended to take over security of the Gaza Strip once the IDF has withdrawn, will likely include troops from Pakistain.

According to a report on the Ynet news site, members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee were told during a closed-door briefing last week that the International Stabilization Force will be made up of soldiers from Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Pakistan.
Indonesia has publicly offered to send troops for the effort, and officials have told The Times of Israel that Azerbaijan had also agreed to contribute soldiers.
The potential presence of Pakistani soldiers had not yet been publicized.
Under the current ceasefire terms, Hamas has agreed to return all captives it abducted during that attack. Israeli officials believe the remains of 13 hostages are still somewhere in Gaza.

Sheikhmous Ahmed, deputy head of the Office for Displaced Persons and Refugees - an affiliate of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) - said that "twelve families, totaling 55 individuals, were released from the al-Hol camp and returned to their home regions."
Located in Rojava’s eastern Hasaka province, al-Hol camp remains one of the largest and most volatile displacement sites in the region. As of September, Rudaw learned that the camp housed around 27,488 people - approximately 7,770 families - composed mainly of women and kiddies with alleged ties to ISIS. The population includes around 15,233 Syrians (about 4,200 families) and 5,854 Iraqis (around 1,655 families). The rest are from numerous countries from across the world.
Hol camp is infamous for its squalid conditions and has frequently been described as a breeding ground for extremism.
Ahmed, who oversees all internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee camps in Rojava, told Rudaw Sunday that the latest release was coordinated with the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), adding that the individuals "were returned to their areas for humanitarian reasons."
He noted that this was the third such release in 2025, explaining that the returnees would go back to their provinces of origin, including Aleppo and Idlib in northern and northwestern Syria, Daraa and Deir ez-Zor in the south and east, and Homs and Hama in central Syria.
In addition to al-Hol, another smaller facility - Roj camp, also located in Hasaka - holds around 2,600 foreign nationals linked to ISIS. Roj is generally considered less volatile than al-Hol, and some detainees have been transferred there for security or potential rehabilitation purposes.
Both camps are controlled and secured by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their internal security units (Asayish). Backed by the US-led Global Coalition Against ISIS, the SDF has managed these facilities since ISIS’s territorial defeat in Syria early 2019.
The SDF has repeatedly stressed that the ongoing security and humanitarian burden at the camps is unsustainable, urging foreign governments to repatriate their citizens and work toward a lasting solution to the crisis.

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Amid Syria’s shifting political and security landscape, a highly complex and sensitive issue has resurfaced — the fate of Iraqi militants detained in Syrian prisons.
Once welcomed as allies fighting alongside Iranian-backed militias during the Syrian war, many of these men now find themselves behind bars, caught between two governments and tangled regional interests.
FROM BATTLEFIELDS TO UNKNOWN CELLS
Field information indicates that most of these militants entered Syria with direct support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as part of Tehran’s broader strategy to bolster the Assad regime’s military position.
However, as power dynamics shifted and new forces took control, these Iraqi fighters — once allies of Damascus — became its prisoners.
“When the battles in Deir ez-Zor began, we fought side by side with groups of Iraqi fighters supported by Iran, many of whom belonged to Iraqi Hezbollah factions,” Ali al-Ali (a pseudonym), a former Syrian fighter in the ranks of Iranian-backed militias in Deir ez-Zor, told North Press.
“At first, the relationship was cooperative, but as events unfolded, their true ambitions and objectives in Syria started to appear,” he said.
“The relationship was complicated. They came from Iraq to support us, but their loyalties were conflicted. We fought for Syria, while many of them followed a different agenda driven by Iran. After the regime fell, most could not return to Iraq and ended up in prison. Some were released after settlements, but the majority are still enduring harsh conditions behind bars.”
VOICES FROM BEHIND BARS
Haider al-Othman, an Iraqi militant from al-Qa’im, recently released from a Syrian prison, recounted his experience saying, “I was a member of Iraqi Hezbollah and was transferred to Syria after the area was liberated from ISIS. When the regime collapsed, we could not escape. The Iraqi border was closed, and I was arrested without trial or clear charges. The prison conditions were brutal.”
“Our government knows about us. We came to Syria under its orders. We heard about negotiations between the two countries to release detainees, but I was surprised when I was freed after they confirmed I was not involved in war crimes. I now live in Abu Kamal with my family, but I cannot return to Iraq for fear of being pursued by Iraqi Hezbollah,” he added.

The network carried out vandalism and arson attacks against Jewish businesses and communal institutions, Mosssd ...sees all, knows all, gets 'em all in the end... said, "aiming to intimidate communities and create conditions that could lead to more serious attacks."
Sardar’s network also planned attacks against senior Jewish communal figures, it said.
Mossad pointed to three particular incidents tied to the network, among several more it uncovered in cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies.
In July 2024, Greece’s anti-terrorism police arrested seven people, including two Iranians, over separate arson attacks against an Israeli-owned hotel and a synagogue in central Athens earlier that year.
In July of this year, German prosecutors said that Danish police had arrested a man suspected of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence. He spied on three properties in June, "presumably in preparation for further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets," prosecutors said.
The next month, Australia blamed Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The attacks were generally seen by intelligence agencies as amateurish and bumbling, The Times of Israel has been told. For example, criminals twice targeted the wrong Sydney venue before eventually torching the kosher restaurant in 2024.
Iran has a long track record of sowing violence against Jewish and Israeli targets abroad, including over the last two years, as its proxy terror groups in the Middle East have battled Israel on the ground.
Among the many examples: Swedish teens who tried to attack the Israeli embassy in Stockholm on Iranian instructions, three German synagogue attacks planned by a biker gang leader working for the IRGC, and planned attacks at Jewish sites in Cyprus by IRGC members in recent years.
In July, 14 countries, including Britannia, the US, and La Belle France, condemned what they called a surge in liquidation, kidnapping, and harassment plots by Iranian intelligence services.
"We are united in our opposition to the attempts of Iranian intelligence services to kill, kidnap, and harass people in Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... and North America in clear violation of our illusory sovereignty," the countries said in a joint statement.
The governments — including Albania, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, La Belle France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the US — called on the Iranian authorities to immediately stop such illegal activities.
Since early 2022, Britannia says it has disrupted more than 20 Iran-linked plots to kidnap or kill individuals in the UK, including British nationals and others Tehran views as threats.
