I quite agree. We need a Vespucci Day. And a Magellan Day. And a Balboa Day. And a Henry Hudson Day. And a Leif Erikson Day. And a de Soto Day. and a John Rolfe Day. And a Captain John Smith Day. And two Pocahontas Days, one for the Powhatan side of her and one for the English side she married into.
And we oughta have days, weeks, and months to honor the indigenous folk. Definitely the Lenape (Delaware, since that's where I live now) week, with maybe three days for the Unlalichtogo (Nanticoke) and two each for the Unami and the Munsee. And I forget how many we need for the Iroquois Confederation. Mohawks and Senecas and Onondagas and such. Is there a difference between a Mohawk and a Mohican? Best be on the safe side. Then there's the Suquehannocks, even if they are all dead. And the Mingos and the Monacans and Pamonkeys and the Shawnees and the Karankawas and the Coahuiltecans and the Croatans and the Creeks and the Potowatamis and the Kickapoos. And the Commanches and Kiowas the Utes and the Paiutes and the Blackfeet and the Cheyenne and the Lakota and the Nez Perce, if not the Pince Nez. We should probably include the Esquimaux too...
You get the idea. Days when we weren't toasting Columbus or some Spaniard or some Portugee or some Frenchy we could be toasting some befeathered fellow who either murdered great-great granddaddy or was murdered in turn, and who mighta even married the deceased's sister or daughter. If there are any days left in the years maybe we can get some work done. Or we could spend it arguing over who we left out.

That's weird, the so called 'Indigenous Peoples' originally came over from what is now known as western Russian and NE China areas (Via the Bering bridge some 15,000 years ago) Hardly indigenous as they were colonialists themselves to begin with.
However some archeologists discovered some foot prints in New Mexico that they dated back to some 26,000 years ago. Who they were is anybody guess.

Get a kick how the IPs wearing western manufactured clothing, driving western manufactured vehicles, all went to demonstrate in probably some other tribe's claimed territory. They should be walking (the horse was a Spanish colonial introduction) in animal skins if they reject the western history.
