A suspect caught on a surveillance camera outside the Beth Yaacov synagogue in the seaside resort of La Grande-Motte, near the city of Montpellier, was caught in surveillance camera footage clad in a Palestinian flag.
Police say the attack happened during a festival in the city centre on Friday evening. The attacker is believed to be still on the lam.
Bild website says a man randomly stabbed passers-by. A manhunt is now under way, with police helicopters seen hovering above the city.
The attack happened during the festival marking 650 years of Solingen.
The city authorities asked people to leave the Fronhof market area and police are imposing security cordons.
Emergency crews at the scene are now treating the injured, media reports say.
Philipp Muller, one of the concert co-organisers, said the emergency crews were fighting for the lives of nine people, the Solinger Tageblatt newspaper reports.
"People are shocked, but left the square peacefully," Mr Muller said.
An unknown assailant has killed three people and seriously injured four more with a knife, according to police. The attack took place as the city of Solingen was celebrating its 650th anniversary.

The incident took place at Fronhof, a marketplace in the center of the city, where a stage had been set up for live music.
Authorities asked residents to leave the city center, according to the Solinger Tageblatt.
The police have issued a major alert and declared a manhunt. Armed officers are currently on the scene and have cordoned off large areas of the city. There are barriers all over the city. According to the German daily Bild, heavily armed SEK units with about 40 special vehicles from all over North Rhine-Westphalia had been deployed to Solingen. Road junctions have been blocked and residents have been asked to stay indoors and avoid the city center, the publication said.
Solingen has a population of about 160,000. It is located near the larger cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf in Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Cops have launched a desperate manhunt for the killer who committed the 'brutal and senseless' strike at 9.45pm before fleeing - leaving a woman and two men from Solingen and nearby Dusseldorf dead.
Police are said to be classifying it as a terrorist attack, according to Bild. Germany's armed special police officers have been deployed to assist at the scene.
Police spokesperson Alexander Kresta said: 'We would like to have a precise description of the perpetrator. That is difficult. Witnesses are in shock or can't speak at the moment.
'We assume [it is] a single offender. He's on the run. He killed three people at the city festival and seriously injured at least four. So we can't say that he's not dangerous.
Germany's top security official, interior minister Nancy Faeser, recently proposed toughening weapons laws to allow only knives with a blade measuring up to 6cm (nearly 2.4in) to be carried in public, rather than the length of 12cm (4.7in), which is allowed now.
The country has seen a series of knife attacks over the past 12 months.
The attacker specifically targeted victims’ throats and necks, Röhrl added.

Solingen stabbing suspect detained, local minister says
Police have arrested a main suspect following the knife attack in Solingen, Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul told German TV.
The minister spoke of a "real suspect" who police had been looking for all day, after a third person had been arrested in connection with the incident.
"They were very probably, still cautiously speaking, not the ones we really suspected," said Reul with regard to the two previous arrests.
"I myself am a bit relieved at the moment," the minister added. "I can only tell you that it is now more than a hunch. Not only did we have a lead on this person, but we've also found pieces of evidence."
The arrested suspect's clothes were dirty and covered in blood, the German news magazine Der Spiegel quoted security sources as saying.

As four soldiers from the force entered the structure, an bomb planted on the outer wall of the building went kaboom!. The blast hurt those standing outside the building, not those inside. At least four other soldiers were seriously maimed, and another three were moderately hurt, according to the IDF.
The military believed that Hamas operatives had set up a camera at the building and then detonated the bomb upon identifying troops in the area.
Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip now stands at 337.
Also in Zeitoun on Friday, the IDF said it carried out an Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... against a Hamas command room embedded within a former school. According to the military, Hamas was using the command room at the Ali Bin Abi Talib School to store "many" weapons and carry out attacks. To mitigate harm to civilians in the strike, the IDF said it carried out "many steps," including using precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and other intelligence.
"The Hamas terror organization systematically violates international law, brutally exploiting civilian institutions and the population as a human shield for terror activity," the military said.
In recent months, dozens of airstrikes have been carried out against Hamas sites embedded within schools and other sites used as shelters for civilians, according to the IDF. The IDF added that it will "continue to act with strength and determination against the terror organizations that use schools and civilian institutions as shelters."

Following the rocket fire, the military called on Paleostinians in the Atatra area of northern Gaza to evacuate and head to "shelters west of Gaza City." Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language front man, published a map of the zones that need to be evacuated. He said the military would "forcefully operate" against Hamas and other terror groups in the area following the rocket fire.
The IDF in recent months has repeatedly issued evacuation orders for areas from which bandidosmurderous Moslems launched rockets at Israel. The successive evacuation orders, including 12 orders in August alone, have displaced roughly 90 percent of the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million residents since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the top United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... humanitarian official for the Paleostinian enclave said.
Muhannad Hadi charged that the evacuation orders of endangering civilians instead of protecting them. Israel says the orders are aimed at warning civilians ahead of major airstrikes or ground operations, thus protecting the population, which comes at the cost of also giving Hamas operatives advanced warning of Israeli actions.
"They are forcing families to flee again, often under fire and with the few belongings they can carry with them, into an ever-shrinking area" that is crowded and unsafe, according to Hadi.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that due to the recent evacuation orders, the UN’s World Food Programme has lost access to its warehouse in central Gaza’s Deir al-Balah.
"This was the third and last operational warehouse in Gaza’s middle area," Dujarric said. "Five community kitchens operated by WFP have also been evacuated, as the agency seeks new locations for them."
The size of the Israeli-designated "humanitarian zone" in Gaza — located in the al-Mawasi area on the southern Strip’s coast, western neighborhoods of Khan Younis, and central Gaza’s Deir al-Balah. — has changed multiple times in recent months amid evolving IDF operations against the Hamas terror group.
TROOPS DEMOLISH KILOMETER-LONG ATTACK TUNNEL IN RAFAH
In other updates on Friday, the IDF said that over the past day, more than 30 targets were struck by the Israeli Air Force in the Gaza Strip, as troops battled and killed dozens of button men. The targets hit by IAF aircraft included Hamas compounds, weapon depots, and rocket launching positions in Khan Younis, according to the military.
In Khan Younis and on the outskirts of Deir al-Balah, the IDF said that troops with the 98th Division killed dozens of button men and destroyed dozens of sites belonging to terror groups.
Further south, in Rafah, the IDF’s 162nd Division continued to operate in the Tel Sultan neighborhood, where the military said troops killed dozens more terror operatives in the past day.
In central Gaza’s Netzarim Corridor, reservists with the 252nd Division killed a terror operative who was carrying explosives, and struck a rocket launching site, the IDF added.
Also Friday, the IDF said combat engineers demolished a Hamas attack tunnel in southern Gaza’s Rafah, where a cell of terror operatives emerged in an attempted attack earlier this month. The tunnel was at least a kilometer long, according to the IDF. In the attack on August 11, a cell of operatives was identified emerging from a tunnel shaft, and a short while later they were killed in a dronezap. Since then, the IDF said combat engineers worked to investigate the tunnel. Inside, the troops found bombs, electrical infrastructure, and blast doors, the military says. The tunnel was demolished after being investigated.

More than 150 tunnels have been demolished along Gaza’s southern border, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced Wednesday, as the army said it destroyed some 30 terror sites and killed dozens of gunmen in airstrikes across the enclave over the past day.
The IDF on Wednesday also called on Palestinians to evacuate from part of the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah where the army vowed to “forcefully operate” against terror groups.
Speaking to troops at the Philadelphi Corridor, which runs along the border, Gallant said the IDF’s 162nd Division had defeated Hamas’s Rafah Brigade, which is centered in the Strip’s southernmost city.
“The most important thing,” he said, “is to remember what the goals of the war are, to meet all the goals of the war, both regarding Hamas and also regarding the hostages, and to look north now.” Gallant was referring to simmering tensions with Iran’s Lebanese proxy Hezbollah, which earlier in the day fired over 50 rockets at the north amid fears of an all-out war.
Meanwhile, the army said it carried out airstrikes on rocket launch sites, tunnel shafts, observation posts and a Hamas command center within a school in Gaza City, in the Strip’s north.
In the Strip’s south and center, ground troops raided Hamas sites and killed gunmen, the army said.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said at least 50 Palestinians were killed and over 100 injured in airstrikes over the past 24 hours.
IDF DESTROYS TERROR SITES AS GROUND TROOPS BATTLE GUNMEN
In Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighborhood, troops with the 162nd Division killed dozens of armed terror operatives, destroyed sites belonging to terror groups and located numerous weapons, the IDF said Wednesday.
Farther north, troops with the 98th Division killed dozens more gunmen and raided Hamas sites on the outskirts of Deir el-Balah and in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, the military said.
The division also directed an airstrike on several terror operatives who had been spotted in an area from which rockets were launched at Israeli border communities several times in recent days, the IDF said.
In central Gaza’s Netzarim Corridor, reservists with the 252nd Division struck buildings that the IDF said were used by Hamas to attack troops.
In the Strip’s north, an IAF airstrike hit Hamas operatives at a command room embedded within a school in Gaza City, the army said.
According to the military, Hamas was using the command room at the Salah ad-Din School to plan and carry out attacks on Israel and troops in Gaza.
The IDF said it took “many steps” to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and other intelligence.
In recent months, the army has carried out dozens of airstrikes on Hamas sites embedded within schools and other sites used as shelters for civilians, according to the IDF. On Tuesday, the army struck what it said was a Hamas command center at a school in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood.
IDF CALLS TO EVACUATE PART OF HUMANITARIAN AREA
Amid the fighting, the IDF called on people to evacuate an Israeli-designated humanitarian area in eastern Deir el-Balah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the fighting have sought shelter. The military said it would soon act against terror groups in the area.
The area is a few hundred meters away from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, one of the last functioning medical centers in the territory. There was no evacuation order for the hospital itself, but during past evacuations people have fled from areas adjacent to the declared zones for fear the fighting could spread.
Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, published on X a map of the zones that need to be evacuated.
Adraee said that the military will “forcefully operate” against terror groups in the area.
“For your safety, we urge you to evacuate immediately to the west. The area you are in is considered a dangerous combat zone,” he added.
The size of the humanitarian zone has changed multiple times, amid evolving IDF operations against the Hamas terror group.
The humanitarian zone is currently around 42 square kilometers, or 11% of the Gaza Strip’s 40 by 11 kilometers (25 by 7 miles). According to IDF estimates, 1.9 million Palestinians, or some 83 percent, of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are residing in the humanitarian zone.

The strikes included the targeting of a Hezbollah cell preparing to shoot rockets from the village of Tayr Harfa. The other Hezbollah members were killed in separate attacks in Ayta al-Jabal, Mays al-Jabal, Aitaroun and Maarakeh.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the airstrike in Ayta al-Jabal targeted Muhammad Najam, a prominent member of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit in southern Lebanon. Lebanese media reported that alongside Najam, his nephew Zulfiqar Radwan was also killed in the strike on Ayta al-Jabal.
The military also identified Saeed Mahmoud Diab, who was killed in Maarakeh by an IDF drone, as a member of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit.
The IDF said the operative in Mays al-Jabal had launched rockets at the Yiftah area earlier in the day and was killed upon being spotted at a building used by Hezbollah, while the operative in Aitaroun was struck shooting projectiles toward Malkia.

The Israeli strikes followed several Hezbollah attacks in the morning, including the firing of missiles at the Mount Meron base.
Hezbollah has attacked Mount Meron, located some eight kilometers (5 miles) from the Lebanon border, several times amid the ongoing war, launching large barrages of rockets toward the site, as well as guided missiles at the sensitive air traffic control base that sits atop it.
The IDF reported no injuries in the latest attack, during which three projectiles were fired at the base, one of which was intercepted.
Hezbollah also launched several rocket volleys at northern Israel on Friday, including a fusillade of some 40 projectiles fired at the Kiryat Shmona area and a salvo of around 20 rockets targeting Safed and its surroundings.
No injuries were reported in any of the attacks.
The IDF said some of the rockets fired toward Safed and Kiryat Shmona were shot down by air defenses, while the rest struck open areas.

Some of the rockets also sparked forest fires near Safed, which were extinguished hours later. The IDF later said it destroyed a Hezbollah rocket launcher in at-Tiri that was used in the barrage on Safed.
Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis. So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 19 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.
In addition to the 427 members whose deaths Hezbollah has announced during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria, another 73 operatives from other terror groups have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli strikes. A Lebanese soldier and dozens of civilians have also been killed.

In a statement, the ministry said the murderous Moslems were arrested in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Fars, and Khuzestan.
''Fourteen elements of the US-Zionist-led group known as ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS—K) were identified and arrested by the order of the respected judicial authority,'' read the statement.
It added that the murderous Moslems had entered the country illegally in the last few days with the aim of carrying out terrorist operations.
''Of these, 7 ISIS elements were arrested in Fars province and 7 murderous Moslems were arrested in Tehran, Alborz and Khuzestan provinces,'' the ministry explained, adding that the results of the investigations and interrogations will be published later.
