[AlJazeera] Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans... has been stricken by a cholera outbreak that has killed nearly two dozen people and sickened hundreds more in recent weeks, health authorities said.
Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim said in a statement on Sunday that at least 22 people have died from the disease, and that at least 354 confirmed cases of cholera have been detected across the war-torn country in recent weeks.
On Saturday, he declared a cholera epidemic in Sudan and noted that the outbreak was ''because of the weather conditions and because drinking water has been contaminated''.
He said the decision was taken in conjunction with authorities in the eastern state of Kassala, United Nations ...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society... agencies and experts after the ''discovery by the public health laboratory of the cholera virus''.
An official from the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Harris, said in a media call on Friday that 11,327 cholera cases with 316 deaths had been reported in Sudan so far.
''We expect to have more than has been reported,'' she added.
Cholera is a fast-developing, highly contagious infection that causes diarrhoea, leading to severe dehydration and possible death within hours when not treated, according to the WHO. It is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water and can kill within hours without treatment. Children under five are at particular risk.
Cholera is not uncommon in Sudan. A previous major outbreak left at least 700 dead and sickened about 22,000 in less than two months in 2017.
But the outbreak of the disease is the latest calamity for the region.
Devastating seasonal floods in recent weeks have also compounded the misery. Dozens of people have been killed and critical infrastructure has been washed away in 12 of Sudan's 18 provinces, according to local authorities. About 118,000 people have been displaced due to the floods, according to the United Nations' migration agency.
[NYPOST] A Georgia sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while responding to a reported domestic dispute in what police said was an ambush on officers by a suspect who took his own life.
Two deputies responded to a call shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday and immediately were fired upon from a home in a subdivision in Hiram, Georgia, Major Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said during a briefing.
The male suspect also fired ''a hail of bullets'' at other officers but only one was shot, Henson said.
Deputy Brandon Cunningham, 30, died at a hospital from a gunshot wound, Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge confirmed during the briefing.
''Tonight, we've lost a hero,'' Gulledge said, adding that ''it's going to be a tough time for all of us and all of our guys.''
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Henson said.
A woman who was involved in the domestic dispute had left but returned while police were at the scene.
She also had been shot and was transported to an Atlanta-area hospital and listed in stable, pH balanced condition, Henson said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will oversee the investigation, Henson said, adding that it was not immediately clear if any of the officers returned fire in the community about 27 miles northwest of Atlanta.
"Unfortunately, it appears as if our deputies were ambushed," Henson said.

Some reports said the incident was criminal.

''Earlier today, three peacekeepers on patrol were lightly injured when a kaboom occurred near their clearly marked UN vehicle in the vicinity of Yarine, in south Lebanon,'' the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement.
''All peacekeepers in the patrol returned safely to their base. We are looking into the incident,'' it added.
Earlier Sunday, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency had reported that ''Israeli enemy warplanes'' struck the village of Dhayra, about one kilometer (0.6 miles) from Yarine, ''resulting in injuries.''

Officials in the terror group believe the call came from someone who had breached its internal communications network, exposing failures in Hezbollah’s intelligence network that compromised one of its most senior and elusive leaders.
