Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: August 2, 2024
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Worth noting, korrespondent.net has compiled its Invasion of Ukraine series into separate months, beginning May 9th, 2023. Linked in the title.

[Korrespondent] 22:07 Budanov did not rule out that the Crimean Bridge could be destroyed in the next few months: "Everyone is working on long-range strikes and on this. This all requires a comprehensive solution. The work is underway."

19:40 Russian troops attacked Mirnohrad in Donetsk Oblast, probably using two FAB-250 aerial bombs, the prosecutor's office reported. Three people were wounded, including two children aged seven and nine.

19:29 Russians are transferring new brigades to the Pokrovsk direction, said Ruslan Mikula, an analyst for the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState. According to him, the situation in the Pokrovsk direction is extremely difficult: Ukraine has lost many villages and territories. "New Russian brigades are being transferred to the Pokrovsk direction. For example, one of the enemy brigades, which was previously recorded as having been defeated in the Krynki area, was restored in the Dzhankoy area and is now in the Berdychi area, west of Avdiivka. That is, the transfer continues, and it is difficult to predict how many more there will be, since the enemy does not take into account losses. The Russians have great human potential, which is being used to the maximum," Mikula noted.

19:20 Russians shelled occupied Volnovakha in Donetsk Oblast, killing one person, ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets reported. "That is, in essence, in order to stage a provocation, the aggressor country itself shells the territories under its control," the human rights ombudsman emphasized. According to him, hits were recorded in four different locations.

19:13 Zelensky said in an evening video address that he had listened to Syrsky's report on the situation at the front: "Most carefully, of course, regarding the Pokrovsky direction. There are always the toughest battles there, and this direction requires our most intensified responses to the occupier." In addition, the president heard Budanov's report. "The details are not public," the head of state added. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reported on cooperation with Turkey, among other things, on the continuation of the construction of corvettes for Ukraine.

In addition, Zelensky announced "absolutely modern solutions" for military personnel, which "will definitely remove a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy and paperwork from units" and "have a truly innovative look."

18:56 During the day on August 2, the air defense of southern Ukraine shot down five reconnaissance drones: three Zala and two Supercam, the Air Force reported.

18:17 The Cabinet of Ministers approved the opening of all state border checkpoints for the supply of military goods, the Finance Ministry reported. The resolution provides for an expansion of the number of checkpoints for military goods during martial law, namely the unimpeded movement of military goods through all open checkpoints of the state border of Ukraine, including those coming from partner countries.

17:38 A new profession has been approved in Ukraine - deminer, the Ministry of Economy reported. Previously, there was no single professional standard for deminers in Ukraine, which complicated the training of specialists. The presence of a new standard creates uniform training rules, which will allow veterans to be involved in humanitarian demining and will facilitate their integration both in the Ukrainian and international spheres, the department noted.

17:15 The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution defining the mechanism for ensuring the activities of specialists in supporting war veterans and demobilized persons in the system of transition from military service to civilian life. In particular, this concerns the regulation of the issue of remuneration and the definition of the mechanism for organizing its activities.

16:54 The United States has purchased 18 powerful autotransformers for Ukraine, Ambassador Bridget Brink reported.

16:21 Another 700,000 people will leave Ukraine due to problems with electricity, the NBU predicts. In particular, according to the regulator's forecast, about 400,000 people will leave the country this year, and another 300,000 next year. A gradual return of migrants is expected from 2026.

15:43 The so-called six-point "consensus" between China and Brazil on ending the war in Ukraine has received support in more than 110 countries, said Li Hui, the Chinese government's special representative for Eurasia. According to him, the main priority now is "cooling the situation." The Chinese diplomat assured that Beijing is ready to strengthen contacts and coordination with the Brazilian side on the issue of a political settlement of the "crisis in Ukraine," and stressed the need for joint efforts to finally resolve it.

14:57 Representatives of the Ombudsman's Office met with employees of the Russian Human Rights Commissioner's Office, where they exchanged lists of prisoners of war according to the "200 to 200" formula and discussed humanitarian issues, Dmitry Lubinets reported. The Ombudsman also said that within the framework of family reunification provided for by the Geneva Convention, a daughter and son from Luhansk region were returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine, and they have already met with their mother. A woman who was reunited with her daughter also returned.

14:09 The Croatian authorities have decided to update the weapons of their armed forces, and old armored vehicles of Russian and Yugoslav production may be transferred to Ukraine, Vecernji list writes. According to the publication, the development plan of the Croatian Armed Forces until 2028 provides for the purchase of a significant amount of military equipment. The country's Defense Ministry is already negotiating with potential suppliers, but deliveries are delayed due to the priority delivery of weapons to Ukraine.

13:18 Russians attacked Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region - one person was killed, one was wounded, reported the head of the OVA Oleg Sinegubov.

12:30 Telegram channel Krymskiy Veter reports, citing its sources, that last night in Sevastopol, at the heights of Kaya-Bash, a position of the S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile system was preliminarily hit - four launchers based on the MAZ-543 and a 92N6 radar.

12:19 Ukraine has returned home the bodies of another 250 fallen defenders, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.

12:14 Russian troops attacked Kherson from a drone. People who were on the street came under enemy attack: one person was killed, one was wounded, reported the head of the OVA Alexander Prokudin.

11:39 In the morning, Russians used a drone to strike a bus with people in the Dergachev community of the Kharkiv region - six construction workers were injured, said the head of the OVA Oleg Sinegubov.

11:01 Russians attacked the Esman community in Sumy Oblast with FPV drones, one person was injured, OVA reported.

10:46 The Indian government has announced that it is currently aware of eight Indians recruited by Russia who have died in the war in Ukraine. Another 63 Indians are trying to get an early discharge from the Russian army, where they were tricked into joining.

10:19 At night, two drones hit the 500 kV Kubanskaya substation in Tikhoretsk, Krasnodar Krai, the Russian opposition publication Astra reports, citing sources in the region's emergency services. A fire broke out and air circuit breakers were damaged. There were no casualties.

09:20 Over the past 24 hours, as a result of Russian shelling, five people were wounded in Donetsk Oblast and three in Kherson Oblast, according to the OVA.

09:14 Over the past and current day, 11 UAVs have been shot down by air defense in the southern and eastern directions: one Shahed, two Supercams, three Lancets, one Orlan-10 and four more drones, the type of which is being determined, the Air Force reported.

08:32 The US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports, citing geolocation footage, that Russian troops continue to slowly but steadily advance in the Pokrovsk direction, largely due to the lack of Ukrainian manpower and the terrain features in the area northwest of Avdiivka. In particular, Russian troops have advanced within Veseloye in the direction of the T0511 road, and to date, the furthest confirmed advance of Russian troops has been recorded approximately 3.5 km from the outskirts of Grodovka.

At the same time, ISW predicts that the Russian advance toward Pokrovsk will slow as Russian troops approach a line of larger, more urbanized settlements. However, analysts point out that Ukrainian troops are now much more exhausted than they were in early 2024, when the Russians captured Avdiivka.

07:58 The General Staff announced the estimated losses of the Russian Federation as of the morning of August 2:

  • personnel - about 580 590 (+1100) people,

  • tanks - 8402 (+3),

  • combat armored vehicles - 16,211 (+8),

  • artillery systems - 16,161 (+42),

  • MLRS - 1134 (+2),

  • air defense systems - 907 (+0),

  • aircraft - 363 (+0),

  • helicopters - 326 (+0),

  • Operational-tactical level UAVs - 13,005 (+37),

  • cruise missiles - 2407 (+0),

  • ships/boats - 28 (+0),

  • submarines - 1 (+0),

  • automotive equipment and tank trucks - 21,872 (+56),

  • special equipment - 2719 (+6).

06:25 "Governor" of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev announced a massive attack, which was allegedly repelled. According to him, the shot down part of the ATACMS missile fell on a nine-story residential building in Sevastopol, residents were evacuated. Crimean Telegram channels, citing sources, write that a ship repair yard of the Black Sea Fleet was attacked. Publics also report fires at the position of the Russian air defense military unit in Balaklava.

#4  Half of Ukraine are no go areas for Ukrainian and former Soviet officials. Western Ukraine is so lawless. It is unbelievable to hear the tales of mass murder of innocents in the 1960s, out for a night of camping. It is an area rife with organized crime and it is a major smuggling route for goods, drugs, and slaves.

Check out the stories I wrote about Mukhachevo in 2015 to get a sense of just how bad it is. You think they give a fuck about Right Sector or any others in their territory?

Blackrock just pissed their investment away if they think their investment is safe from Banderists and criminals who control the area.

Think Ukrainian-speaking hillbillies with AKs and RPGs.

16:44 They report about a powerful explosion in Kyiv - after it, thick black smoke rises into the sky.

There was no air raid alarm!

15:37 Telegram channel «Fisherman»:

South Donetsk direction: Russian Armed Forces take control of a section of the T-05-24 highway southwest of Konstantinovka.

– The situation in the South Donetsk direction continues to develop dynamically: if a few days ago we wrote about a significant expansion of the zone of control of the Russian Armed Forces practically along the entire line of contact, then the day before new evidence of the advancement of Russian troops appeared.

– Units of the Russian Armed Forces have occupied a section of land north of the T-05-24 highway in the area of the village of Pobeda. This is also evident from footage from the enemy side, which shows strikes on advancing Russian armored vehicles.

– To the southwest, assault groups cut off a section of the T-05-24 highway connecting Konstantinovka and Ugledar. The advance on this section was more than two kilometers, and a Russian flag was installed on the highway itself in the back of one of the vehicles.

– At the same time, the Russian Armed Forces continue to strike the enemy's frontline and rear facilities. One of the hits hit the Ukrainian Armed Forces ammunition depot on the territory of the hangar of the former agricultural firm "Agrotis".

– Russian UAV operators are also effective. Almost regularly, footage of successful destruction of Ukrainian armored vehicles appears on the Internet – one of them was a drone hitting an enemy infantry fighting vehicle south of Katerynivka.

– The capture by Russian troops of the section of the highway between Ugledar and Konstantinovka will allow both to strengthen the pressure on the southern outskirts of the latter and to worsen the situation of Ukrainian formations in the area of the Ikryanaya gully.

15:15 In Ivanovka, our units were able to push back the enemy in the center of the village. The fighting is shifting to the western outskirts.

14:47 Odessa region (Odessa).

Powerful explosion rang out in Odessa after a high-precision strike on a warehouse with NATO weapons.

Heavy smoke and fire above the landing site.

14:22 The Russian Armed Forces advanced south of Konstantinovka and reached the highway to Ugledar –map.

13:57 It is reported about our tactical aviation launching new strikes on the Ukroboronprom military plant and the Ukrainian Armed Forces repair shop near Khar'kov.

Early in the morning, Su-34M aircraft used high-precision cruise missiles Kh-59. Repair complexes and hangars with the parking of Ukrainian Armed Forces equipment were damaged on the territory of the plant.

13:29 Telegram channel «Fisherman»:

Pokrovsky direction: liberation of most of Timofeyevka and successes of the Russian Armed Forces on the southern flank of the "Pokrovsky salient".

– The situation in the Pokrovsky direction is developing rapidly – Russian troops are conducting an offensive in the area from Timofeevka to Yasnobrodovka. Despite the deployment of new units, the Ukrainian Armed Forces command is unable to stabilize the situation and stop the advance of the Russian Armed Forces. The situation of Ukrainian formations remains stably difficult, Russian attack aircraft are bypassing the enemy’s fortified positions and are actively hunting for armored vehicles using new drones.

– On the northern flank, units of the Russian Armed Forces occupied the southern part of Timofeevka, where there is a crossing over the Kazenny Torets River, used by the enemy to supply its units. The enemy still holds positions in the north of the village, but most of it has already come under the control of Russian troops.

South of the settlement, Russian attack aircraft hit a large stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, the "wedge" in the positions of Ukrainian formations, which will form as a result of the liberation of Timofeevka, will simplify the subsequent offensive on neighboring Vozdvizhenka and Lisichnoye.

– Russian troops have established control over Vesyoloye, located northeast of the railway, along which the Russian Armed Forces had previously advanced in this area. Enemy units have retreated to fortified positions northeast of the settlement.

To the south, Russian attack aircraft were able to approach Zhelannoye and, according to some information, have already entered it in the area of ??the railway station. However, this information has not yet been confirmed either by footage or by reports from sources “on the ground”.

- The large stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to the east, previously mentioned by us, was apparently also successfully occupied by units of the Russian Armed Forces. In many ways, this became possible due to the previously formed "semi-ring" around the enemy positions, which made it possible to cut off the Ukrainian Armed Forces units defending this area from supplies. Now the Russian troops have the opportunity to develop an offensive to the south, bypassing the strongholds of the Ukrainian formations on the right bank of the Volchya River.

– On the southern flank of the “Pokrovsky salient,” Russian troops are gradually advancing toward Mezhevoye, relying on the previously liberated Novoselovka Pervaya.

The enemy, seeking to slow down the advance of the Russian Armed Forces, is actively mining the approaches to both Mezhevoye itself and neighboring Skuchnoye. Minefields are also being installed in the area of the Volchya River bed to the west of both settlements, which are the enemy’s last line of defense on the left bank. After their liberation, the Russian Armed Forces will be able to force the water obstacle and develop an offensive toward Kamyshevka, creating a semicircle around the Ukrainian Armed Forces units fighting on the Zhelannoye-Mezhevoye line.

12:46 Ocheretino – Volchye.

Grain and Oil: Why the West Can't Block Russian Exports
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Ivan Lizan

[REGNUM] The past July was marked by attempts by Kiev and London to increase sanctions pressure on Russia, which was also the subject of the fourth summit of the European Political Community. It was preceded by statements by the acting Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky about the need to create a system for determining the origin of grain exported by Russia, and at the summit, its participants also decided to fight the Russian "shadow fleet".

However, the sanctions practice of recent years shows that wanting does not always mean being able, and the implementation of sanctions is often hampered by objective circumstances: chemistry, physics and the foundations of international law. The desire to ban wheat from Novorossiya is in the sphere where chemistry plays against the West, and the "ban list" introduced by the British against the tanker fleet rests on international law.

Russia's opponents are stubborn and have not given up hope of inventing something that would force it to capitulate. But so far sanctions have proven extremely ineffective as instruments of coercion to change political course.

CHEMISTRY AGAINST THE WEST
On July 1, the already mentioned Vysotsky reported that in August–September, the Kyiv authorities will have the opportunity to determine the region of origin of agricultural products that Russia exports.

The next step is to create a system of punishment for buyers of grain from Novorossiya. They will try to subject ships carrying grain to sanctions or arrests, and intimidate buyers of the products with sanctions and possible restrictions. The fact that the UK is developing the system guarantees problems for ship owners with insurance.

But this plan, which at first glance seems feasible, has a number of flaws.

It is unclear how exactly the region of origin of grains and oilseeds will be determined. The world has been growing approximately the same varieties of agricultural plants for decades, and Russia is no exception.

Wheat is not oil, which is divided into grades depending on the content of sulfur and paraffin impurities. Russian wheat from the Kherson region is no different from wheat from the Rostov region - it does not have a gene responsible for the region of growth, or any specific markers that allow you to accurately determine the place of cultivation.

The only way to identify grain is to divide it into classes depending on its characteristics (gluten content, protein, presence of impurities, damage to grains by pests). They are universal for the whole world, which allowed wheat to become an exchange commodity.

Therefore, it will not be possible to separate grain from Novorossiya from grain from the Don or Kuban.

But it is not a fact that this will be done at all - if desired, any batch of grain or oilseeds can be declared "stolen from the Ukrainian people". However, this will not help the fighters against Russia: there are no "extra" grains in the world that could replace supplies from Russia. Russian agricultural exports have been restructured since the beginning of the NWO - 80% of supplies go to friendly or neutral countries, where goods are selected based on their quality and price.

Moreover, such activity will only accelerate the emergence of exchange trading centers independent of the US and EU: on July 28, the BRICS countries supported the initiative to create a grain exchange within the association.

"BRICK" OF INTERNATIONAL LAW
Now it is worth paying special attention to how the fundamental principles of international law reduce the effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions. And we are not even talking about the hackneyed story of the confiscation of Russian gold and foreign exchange reserves frozen after the start of the special operation in the US and the EU.

We are talking about a "shadow fleet" of more than 600 tankers, which, according to Lloyd's List Intelligence, transport over 1.7 million barrels of Russian oil daily, allowing Russia to bypass Western sanctions and sell oil at a price above the established "price ceiling". The West considers such activity illegal, although from the standpoint of international law, any unilateral economic restrictions are illegal - sanctions can only be imposed by the UN Security Council.

To curb the fleet's operations, the UK and 44 EU countries agreed to "work together to combat the use of illegal vessels that pose a significant threat to the safety and environment of waterways."

In essence, the West has admitted that all previously imposed sanctions – a ban on Russian ships entering European ports, refusal to provide insurance and financial services, sanctions against individual ships, an oil embargo and a “price cap” – have proven ineffective. The lack of a single coordinated EU policy on sanctions enforcement, for example, was criticized by Laura Deegan, an adviser to the law firm Miller & Chevalier.

“Whether a member country cares about G7 sanctions or decides to enforce them is different. They may not have the resources to take sanctions enforcement seriously,” she told S&P Global in March 2024.

In such circumstances, the only way to force Russia to comply with oil sanctions is to create physical problems with oil exports by appealing to the topic of environmental protection. The logic is simple: Russia exports the lion's share of its oil from the Baltic Sea ports in old and unsafe tankers, thereby exposing the fragile ecosystem of the Baltic to environmental threats.

And since the tankers pass through the Danish straits of Oresund and Kattegat, Denmark has moral grounds to stop such oil trade, combining environmental protection with forcing Russia to comply with sanctions restrictions.

As with grain, this approach appears – from the point of view of Russia’s opponents – not only morally justified, but also quite feasible in practice. But there are several fundamental problems.

It is obvious that the environmental agenda is nothing more than a pretext - before the start of the NWO, the Baltic countries were not too concerned about this issue. Denmark, which, in the logic of the fight against the "shadow fleet", should be charged with the responsibility of restricting the passage of tankers, even approved the construction of four branches of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Plus, the restriction of shipping has been discussed since about mid-2023, and it turns out that before that, the Western countries were not concerned about environmental issues either.

It is also clear that an "old" fleet does not mean "dangerous". A tanker is a vessel with a double hull, and examples of catastrophic oil spills are extremely rare. In general, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. There are vessels in the seas that are much older than 30-40 years, and there are no questions about them from authorities and public figures concerned about environmental protection.

Moreover, restricting shipping for tankers, regardless of their flag and whether their shipowners comply with anti-Russian sanctions, would be a flagrant violation of international law.

CASUS BELLI
Maritime shipping is regulated by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and to combat the "shadow fleet" it will be necessary to violate many provisions of this document. And even if an accident occurs on a tanker with an oil spill, this will not be a violation of the rules of innocent passage through the territorial sea.

In addition, a sea vessel is considered the territory of the state whose flag it flies. Article 27 of the Convention stipulates that the criminal jurisdiction of a coastal state does not extend to vessels flying a foreign flag, with the exception of certain crimes related to that state. Thus, it is impossible to stop a vessel with Russian oil just like that, at the behest of the heart. This will become a casus belli - a pretext for declaring war on the state whose flag the vessel flies.

The Danish Straits are used for international shipping, and in such straits, Article 38 of the Convention guarantees the right of transit passage, which must be rapid and uninterrupted. Article 39 stipulates the duties of ships during transit passage, and there is not a word about the environment, not to mention the age of ships.

Denmark will not be able to write its own rules for transit passage for the "shadow fleet" tankers transporting Russian oil. And any transit rules must comply with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and be agreed upon with other states bordering the straits.

Moreover, Article 44 specifically states that states bordering the straits must not impede transit passage and there must be no suspension of it.

But even if we imagine practical attempts to restrict the passage of tankers with Russian oil, such activity will look extremely strange.

Firstly, tankers sail under a convenient flag, and the Russian flag does not apply to them. That is, the Danish coast guard will have to stop tankers from Liberia, the Bahamas, Belize and other island states that have no relation to Russia.

Secondly, ships have long been staffed with mixed crews, where Russian citizens often find themselves in the minority. And this means diplomatic problems with states that have no relation to Russia.

Thirdly, the owners of the tanker and cargo are usually foreign companies. An example is a Greek vessel under the flag of Liberia with a cargo of Russian oil purchased by an Emirati company for subsequent delivery to India. And this does not take into account the fact that while the ship is going from point A to point B, the transported cargo can be sold several times.

Simply put, getting involved in a fight with the Russian "shadow fleet" is not worth it: there will be no benefits, but there will be problems, and these problems will be serious, since maritime trade is extremely globalized. Moreover, such a fight could turn against Denmark itself. It is, without exaggeration, the leader in the global market of maritime cargo transportation: Maersk alone employs over 100 thousand people in 135 countries, so no one will put their companies at risk for the sake of fighting the transportation of Russian oil.

And there are plenty of “narrow” and “hot” places in the world’s oceans – just look at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait with the Houthis.

In fact, Kyiv and its sponsors returned to the topic of increasing the enforceability of sanctions due to the ineffectiveness of the initially imposed restrictions. In 2022, it was assumed that the European embargo on coal, oil and oil products, as well as the undermining of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, along with other restrictions, would lead to a sharp decline in federal budget revenues and force Russia to capitulate to the West. In reality, this did not happen.

Therefore, the very discussion about the fight against the Russian "shadow fleet" and the creation of some specific tracking systems indicates that the initiators of the sanctions have not achieved their goals. And the problem for the West is that the price of forcing Russia to submit is unacceptable for it.

“Extend the period of preventive measures for the accused Peshkov for two months, that is, until October 7, 2024,” the judge announced the ruling.

The court hearing was held behind closed doors at the request of the military investigator, since the criminal case contains information about a special military operation, including an attack on rations for the needs of the SVO.

On the same day, it became known that the colonel was charged with embezzlement as part of the investigation into the criminal case of embezzlement. The criminal case was opened in 2022, a little less than six months after the start of the special military operation.

In addition, on August 1, the Meshchansky Court of Moscow arrested Vladimir Pavlov, CEO of JSC Voentorg, in a case of embezzlement of money during the execution of government contracts. Pavlov did not admit guilt. The property of the defendants in the case was seized. According to the investigation, in 2019–2022, the defendants and employees of JSC Voentorg, together with accomplices, entered into a criminal conspiracy to embezzle funds from the Ministry of Defense. The price of the contracts was inflated by 400 million rubles, the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted.

Previously, criminal cases were opened against former Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov, who is suspected of corruption, and the head of the Defense Ministry's personnel department, Yuri Kuznetsov, who is accused of bribery, former Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, and the head of the Main Communications Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin. Former commander of the 58th Army Ivan Popov is a defendant in a fraud case.

Cyber
Zakharova says that there are compelling reasons to take action against YouTube
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russian regulators may use "legal tools" against YouTube in connection with systematic violations of Russian legislation and disregard for the rights of the audience by the video hosting service. This is stated in a message published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry by the official representative of the foreign policy department Maria Zakharova.

According to her, the administration of the video hosting service began to systematically cleanse the information field, starting with blocking the accounts of Russian federal regional media, and then moved on to blocking the accounts of government agencies, as well as the accounts of well-known public figures, bloggers and journalists.

“In other words, YouTube carried out an act of direct censorship, obstructing the free distribution and access to information, thereby violating the rights of hundreds of thousands of our subscribers,” the MFA representative added.

Moreover, Zakharova recalls, in August 2022, YouTube removed 29 materials posted on the official channel of the Russian Embassy in London, which, in turn, is a crude attempt to limit the information work of Russian diplomatic missions.

"Thus, we see many compelling reasons for taking action against the YouTube video hosting service. Numerous systematic violations of the legislation of the Russian Federation, demonstrative disregard for the domestic audience and its interests leave the regulatory bodies of our state with the right to use the appropriate legal instruments," Zakharova concluded.

As reported by the Regnum news agency, the work of the YouTube video hosting service in Russia will soon slow down to 70%, State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein warned on July 26. This will happen because Russian data centers cooperating with the Google platform (the owner of YouTube) plan to stop working with the company under “gray” schemes in the coming days, he specified.

YouTube is not a neutral Internet platform that focuses on the interests of its audience; the video hosting service is working out the political instructions of the US authorities, said Andrei Nastasin, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, on July 31. The YouTube administration continues to ignore the legal demands of Roskomnadzor to remove extremist materials, he added.

On August 1, Russian users began to report problems with the video hosting service en masse.

At the same time, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, stated that YouTube is working normally for him.

'The Fall of the American Falcon': What awaits the newly arrived F-16s in Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Artemy Sharapov

[REGNUM] Ukraine has received the long-awaited first batch of American fourth-generation F-16 fighters, at least that's what Bloomberg reported, citing an anonymous, informed source.

The publication’s source clarified that for now this is a “small number,” and that NATO doubts that Ukrainian pilots will be able to fly aircraft in the foreseeable future.

The news was published a few days after videos were posted online that allegedly showed American aircraft in the Ukrainian skies. However, official Kyiv immediately stated that it would not comment on any publications related to the supply of fighter jets.

As the adviser to the head of Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, Mykhailo Podolyak, stated, “it is clear that we will not comment on this in any way, because for us this is a survival factor.”

There are high hopes for the F-16 as another wonder weapon. Earlier, the Ukrainian Armed Forces command directly stated that the supplies should help change the balance of power during the conflict.

For example, the commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Oleksiy Neizhpapa, suggested that the appearance of American aircraft would, at least, call into question Russia's "complete dominance" in the skies over the Black Sea. But Regnum News Agency has figured out how justified such a hope is.

"SHORT-RANGE AIRCRAFT"
The decision to provide Ukraine with American-made aircraft was made by NATO in the summer of 2023. The Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Norway joined the "fighter coalition", agreeing to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with F-16 aircraft from their own air forces that were being decommissioned. The coalition also promised to provide assistance with pilot training and maintenance personnel preparation.

The governments of Denmark and the Netherlands have indicated that they will allow Ukraine to use F-16s to strike at Russian territory, although Copenhagen added that such a step would be “depending on the circumstances.” This is not about “cast-off items” being handed over to the Ukrainian Air Force from a “master’s shoulder.” The F-16 Falcon is a proven machine.

The US Air Force alone has about three thousand fighters of this model. Hundreds more have been sold to a large number of foreign customers. According to media reports, the Ukrainian Air Force will receive fighters in the Bloc 40/50 modification - in principle, corresponding to the realities of modern warfare.

On the other hand, the combat radius of the fighters relative to the takeoff airfield is small - lower than that of the Russian Su-30 family of fighters, and in terms of flight altitude they are inferior to the MiG-31 interceptors. At the same time, the range of the Khibiny radar station installed on modern Russian fighters exceeds 300 km, with 100-150 km for the radar on the F-16.

This means that the Sokol can be shot down by an enemy that is beyond its detection capabilities.

It is also not entirely clear how many aircraft Kyiv can actually count on. Western sources claim that Ukraine will receive at least 79 fighters, but the delivery schedule has been stretched out until either 2026 or 2028 — the final date is constantly being pushed back. Earlier, a number of Western media outlets noted that in 2024 the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive a maximum of 10-12 aircraft.

But the lack of fighters is not the only problem for the Ukrainian Air Force, military expert Alexander Artamonov told IA Regnum. Moreover, even a small number of aircraft creates a lot of problems with their maintenance and pilot training.

"Most likely, we are talking about the planes that were transferred from the Netherlands to Romania to train Ukrainian pilots. It is known that, according to the conclusion of NATO officers, only one out of twenty Ukrainian cadets is ready to perform flight work. Among the problems mentioned were poor language skills, lack of diligence and, for example, weight gain - that is, getting out of optimal shape," the expert notes.

Therefore, most likely, Western veterans from Europe or the United States will be at the controls, especially since NATO flight centers recently announced a recruitment of veteran pilots.

BATTLE FOR AIR SUPREMACY
It cannot be said that the experience of Western pilots or instructors will be useful in the skies over Ukraine. In fact, American pilots have never encountered a truly strong enemy.

During the recent American invasions of Yugoslavia and Iraq, most of the aircraft of the Air Forces of these countries were burned on the airfields, so the US aviation did not meet significant resistance. But the Russian pilots encountered, albeit smaller in numbers, but overall - a serious opponent and won the battle for the air.

In the first weeks of the SVO, obituaries of the dead Ukrainian pilots appeared online almost daily, and air battles took place in the skies above Kiev every day. It is quite difficult to establish the exact losses of the Ukrainian Air Force. Some of this was confirmed from obituaries published in the media (later such publications were banned for reasons of secrecy), and some can be tracked from satellite photographs of the wreckage or directly at the crash site.

And the F-16 could face the same fate, notes Austrian military analyst Tom Cooper.

“We should expect the Russians to figure out some kind of ‘field work’ for their MiG-31 crews. At the very least, to get plenty of opportunities to use their missile strikes and attack UAVs to ‘lure’ F-16s into ambushes by R-37-equipped MiG-31s. This has happened in the past with Ukrainian MiG-29s and Su-27s: there is no reason to expect the Russians to give up such capabilities in the future,” the expert suggests in a large article published on the Substack publishing platform.

It is noteworthy that recently Ukrainian aircraft have been increasingly destroyed at air bases - both individually, using kamikaze drones, and several at a time, as a result of the use of Iskander tactical missiles. And Kyiv was unable to solve this problem before the appearance of the F-16.

So, most likely, they will have to be placed outside the country.

"With fairly good maneuvering capabilities, the aircraft uses highly purified kerosene. It is impossible to obtain it in Ukraine. Moreover, it has a sensitive chassis, which makes it unlikely that the fighter will be used at Ukrainian airfields. Therefore, most likely, the F-16 will be based abroad and used as cover aircraft or for launching guided missiles, possibly of the Taurus class," adds expert Artamonov.

Kyiv’s American partners may also insist on stationing aircraft outside of Ukraine.

The Biden administration never promised Kyiv even a hundred aircraft, despite the fact that Zelensky requested 150 to 200 aircraft. There is an opinion in the American media that even ten units are too many, because their loss would be extremely expensive. So, in light of all the reasons stated, it can be assumed that the functionality of the F-16 in the air will be seriously limited.

The aircraft fleet will be kept away from the front line, avoiding direct clashes with Russian fighters, to whom they are inferior in a number of characteristics. The fighters will also most likely not participate in "conquering dominance" over the Black Sea and will limit themselves to launching guided weapons.

And this is already a task for our air defense calculations - not to miss targets and reduce the effect of the delivery of fighters to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to a minimum.

I'd have to report it as income for taxation purposes, which I would were I to receive monies, which I don't.

As for regnum.ru : they have the best mix of Russian local and Russian international non official news, which I why I use them in preference to other news sources.

As an aside, you are welcome to post your own articles/news/headlines to counter regnum.ru . I won't stop you.

#7  Most of this is just bunk about the F-16. If you want to talk about short legs for a US fighter, I give you the F-18.

But that being said, the versions that Ukraine has are slightly upgraded ones from 1991 that fought in Desert Storm. Did a great job blowing up Iraq's very good air defence, but there was a lot (AND I MEAN A LOT) of help from everything. Intel, jamming, sister wings, etc. Ukraine does not have that. So will the F-16s be useful? Yes, very. They are great air defense fighters for taking down larger drones and missiles and keeping the Russian aircraft 30km away from the front line.

Downside, the F-16s also have to stay 30km from the front line or they get knocked out of the sky as they don't have the same support as the US ones do. So mostly protecting Kiev and the factories while making the Russian jets dropping glide bombs nervous is their role for now.
