[AFRICANEWS] Niger’s highest court lifted the immunity of the country’s democratically elected president, Mohammed Bazoum, nearly a year after he was tossed by mutinous soldiers, his lawyer said Friday, opening the door for the army junta to prosecute him for alleged high treason.
Bazoum and his family have been under house arrest since a military coup that overthrew his rule last summer. The junta authorities said they planned to prosecute him for "high treason" and for undermining national security, and earlier this year initiated legal proceedings to lift his immunity in a newly created State Court, which became the country’s highest judicial authority.
Before Bazoum was forcibly removed from power, Niger was the West’s last major security partner in the Sahel, the vast region south of the Sahara Desert that has become a hot spot for violent mostly peaceful extremism.
But the military junta ordered the withdrawal of Western troops from the country and turned to Russia for security assistance. U.S. forces are poised to leave by the middle of September, the Pentagon said earlier this month.
The proceedings before the State Court have been marred by serious irregularities, including violations of Bazoum’s rights to present evidence in his defense, to communicate with his legal counsel, and to be heard before an independent court, according to Human Rights Watch, a leading rights group.
Bazoum’s lawyer, Reed Brody, criticized the ruling as a "mockery" of the rule of law in Niger. "We never even got to speak to our client," Brody said. "This is a travesty of justice."
Bazoum’s lawyers have been unable to communicate with him since last October and have had restricted access to case material, according to HRW.
Late last year, the highest court of West African regional bloc ECOWAS ruled that Bazoum and his family were arbitrarily detained and called for him to be reinstated as President.
[IsraelTimes] Spokesman says finance titan remains committed to defense sector, as bands accuse it of ‘bankrolling a genocide’ in Gaza; group leading backlash hails ‘historic victory’ for BDS
Barclays said Friday it has suspended its sponsorship of several leading UK music festivals, after an artist-led backlash over the bank’s provision of financial services to defense companies supplying Israel.
The British bank revealed it had been asked by United States entertainment giant Live Nation to "suspend participation" in its remaining 2024 festivals, which include this weekend’s Download event in central England.
Other high-profile festivals impacted include the Isle of Wight Festival later this month — set to be headlined by Green Day, The Pet Shop Boys and The Prodigy — and July’s Latitude Festival.
Barclaycard’s branding had apparently disappeared Friday from the events’ websites.
The development came after protests and boycott threats from some bands and fans over Barclay’s links to defense firms that supply Israel, leading to accusations the bank was "bankrolling a genocide."
Several bands, including crossover thrash metal outfit Pest Control, had announced they were pulling out of Download and staging a benefit concert for Paleostinians instead.
Live Nation said only: "Following discussion with artists, we have agreed with Barclays that they will step back from sponsorship of our festivals."
A Barclays spokesperson confirmed the move, saying the bank "was asked and has agreed to suspend participation in the remaining Live Nation festivals in 2024."
"The protestors’ agenda is to have Barclays debank defense companies which is a sector we remain committed to as an essential part of keeping this country and our allies safe," its statement added.
It noted that Barclays bank branches have been repeatedly vandalized and staff intimidated, in incidents for which pro-Paleostinian activists have grabbed credit.
"The only thing that this small group of activists will achieve is to weaken essential support for cultural events enjoyed by millions," the Barclays spokesperson added.
"It is time that leaders across politics, business, academia and the arts stand united against this."
Bands Boycott Barclays, a collective of musicians and industry professionals that spearheaded the backlash, hailed the suspension.
It called the move "a historic victory for the Paleostinian-led global BDS movement," referring to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions strategy favored by some activists.
Launched by Paleostinian civil society organizations in 2005, BDS advocates political and economic action against Israel over its treatment of Paleostinians. The movement is regularly accused of antisemitism by Israel and its key backer the United States.

[Washington Examiner] Talk show host Bill Maher revealed his own political prediction that the Democratic Party will lose this November due to the border crisis.
Maher’s prediction came after the European Union election results, which showed a wave of major victories for right-wing parties across the continent. France’s National Rally party, Germany’s Alternative for Deutschland party, Spain’s People’s Party, and Italy’s Brothers of Italy party all beat their respective opponents while running on platforms that called for stricter immigration regulations.
"Voters again for the European Parliament said we do not like this much immigration," Maher said on Friday’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.
Earlier this month, President Joe Biden issued an asylum ban on all immigrants caught crossing the border. The talk show host mocked the criticisms the president received from members of his own party.
"And then they all stand back and go, ’We don’t want to be called a racist. So we will not make a move on to immigration.’ It’s going to get them f***ed on Election Day," Maher said. "It’s happening. It’s happening in Europe right now. That proves it in Europe, and it’s going to happen here in America. It happened with Brexit. It’s going to happen again."

Police said that the arrested suspect, Intizar Shah — who is an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Elite Force — was shifted to Attock City Police Station.
The slain lawyers were identified as former Attock Bar President Israr Ahmed and Advocate Mirza Zulfiqar, who were rubbed out by the cop in their chamber, sources affiliated with the police said.

#Iran has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday, one week after the agency's board of governors passed an anti-Tehran resolution, that it is expanding its nuclear program.https://t.co/gQkQ5Wv6eIpic.twitter.com/Vpud1OOtFQ
US slams Tehran for ‘expanding nuclear program in ways that have no credible peaceful purpose,’ threatens to respond ‘accordingly’; Khamenei adviser: Iran ‘won’t bow to pressure’
Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate JewsZionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... has started up new cascades of advanced centrifuges and plans to install others in the coming weeks after facing criticism over its nuclear program, the United Nations ...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly... ’ atomic watchdog said Friday. The US called the moves "nuclear escalations."
Spinning up new centrifuges further advances Iran’s nuclear program, which already enriches uranium at near-weapons-grade levels and boasts a stockpile enough for several nuclear bombs if it chose to pursue them. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... the acknowledgement from the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency did not include any suggestion Iran planned to go to higher enrichment levels amid wider tensions between Tehran and the West as the Israel-Hamas ..not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,... war rages in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response... Strip.
The IAEA said its inspectors verified Monday that Iran had begun feeding uranium into three cascades of advanced IR-4 and IR-6 centrifuges at its Natanz enrichment facility. Cascades are a group of centrifuges that spin uranium gas together to more quickly enrich the uranium.
So far, Iran has been enriching uranium in those cascades up to 2% purity. Iran already enriches uranium up to 60%, a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.
Iran also plans to install 18 cascades of IR-2m centrifuges at Natanz and eight cascades of IR-6 centrifuges at its Fordo nuclear site. Each of these classes of centrifuges enrich uranium faster than Iran’s baseline IR-1 centrifuges, which remain the workhorse of the country’s atomic program.
Tehran did not immediately acknowledge the decision. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... it comes after Iran threatened to take action following a vote earlier this month at the IAEA’s Board of Governors that censured Iran for failing to cooperate fully with the agency.
The decision immediately drew criticism from State Department front man Matthew Miller.
"Iran aims to continue expanding its nuclear program in ways that have no credible peaceful purpose," Miller said in a statement. "These planned actions further undermine Iran’s claims to the contrary. If Iran implements these plans, we will respond accordingly."
Miller did not elaborate on what steps the US and its allies might take. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... Iran already faces grinding economic sanctions from Washington and others that have deeply cut into its economy and sent its rial currency tumbling over recent years.
Ali Shamkhani, a former top security official within Iran’s theocracy who still advises Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...> , wrote on the social platform X that Tehran remains committed to nuclear safeguards though it "won’t bow to pressure."
"The US and some Western countries would dismantle Iran’s nuclear industry if they could," Shamkhani wrote.
Since the collapse of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers following the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the accord in 2018, it has pursued nuclear enrichment just below weapons-grade levels. Western powers say there is no credible civilian reason for that. Iran says its aims are entirely peaceful but officials have recently said it could change its "nuclear doctrine" if it is attacked or its existence threatened by arch-foe Israel. That has prompted alarm at the IAEA and in Western capitals.
Iran, as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, has pledged to allow the IAEA to visit its atomic sites to ensure its program is peaceful. Tehran also agreed to additional oversight from the IAEA as part of the 2015 nuclear deal. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... for years it has curtailed inspectors’ access to sites while also not fully answering questions about other sites where nuclear material has been found in the past.
The IAEA’s director-general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, visited Iran in May in an effort to boost inspections, but there hasn’t been any major public change in Iran’s stance.
All this comes as the Islamic Theocratic Republic also appears to be trying to contain the risk it faces from the US after launching an unprecedented attack on Israel. The assault — a response to a suspected Israeli strike on April 1 which killed two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps generals and others in Damascus, Syria — further pushed a yearslong shadow war between Israel and Iran out into the open.

[AFRICANEWS] The U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution Thursday demanding that Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans... ’s paramilitary force immediately halt its siege of the only capital in the vast western region of Darfur that it doesn’t control and where more than a million people are reportedly trapped.
The British-sponsored resolution, which was approved by a vote of 14-0 with Russia abstaining, also calls on the paramilitary Rapid Support Force and Sudanese military "to seek an immediate cessation of hostilities" leading to an end to their more than year-long war.
It expresses "grave concern" at the spreading violence and credible reports that the Rapid Support Forces are carrying out "ethnically motivated violence" in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, as well as last year in El Geneina in West Darfur.
Britannia’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward told the council after the vote that the resolution sends a clear message: the RSF must "immediately stop the siege of El Fasher and that all sides step back from the brink."
"An attack on the city would be catastrophic for the 1.5 million people sheltering in the city," she warned. "This brutal and unjust conflict must end."
Sudan plunged into conflict in mid-April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary leaders broke out in the capital Khartoum and spread to other regions including Darfur. The U.N. says over 14,000 people have been killed and 33,000 injured.

Israel has gradually increased its cache of human intelligence as the war goes on, including by interrogating detained Hamas operatives and scouring documents and digital files discovered during ongoing operations in the Strip.
Intelligence gleaned from such sources was used in Saturday’s hostage rescue operation, as well as in previous operations to recover bodies of hostages, the Post reported.
A process commonly referred to as 'All-Source Fusion' which can include:

Their children aged under 10 taken and given to loving jewish families to be raised as jews
We don’t do that — too much history of that being done to our children both in Christendom and the Ummah. We only want those who come to us out of desire and several years of hard study in the teeth of overt discouragement. Even children we adopt as infants, if it’s not known that the birth mother is Jewish, go through formal conversion after their thirteenth birthday, should they choose to do so.
[IsraelTimes] Mothers share accounts of their children’s captivity at conference, with one saying girls forced to clean and cook
The mother of Liri Albag, a 19-year-old female soldier kidnapped on October 7, shared information Friday about her daughter that she said came from freed female hostages and also matched the account of Noa Argamani, who was rescued from Hamas ..a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",... captivity in Gazoo

"As Noa Argamani said, they were slaves, and so were the [female soldiers], including Liri. They cleaned the yard, did dishes, and prepared food that they were not allowed to eat," Shira Albag told a conference of female municipal leaders in Ganei Tikva, south of Tel Aviv.
Shira Albag said that as far as she knew from accounts, her daughter was initially moved between some four homes, among them a luxury villa, and was only allowed to shower a month into her captivity. After 40 days, according to Albag, Liri was moved into Hamas’s network of underground tunnels, where there was little food and no light, and the water was salty and rationed.
Argamani was rescued in an Israeli security forces operation on Saturday, along with Shlomi Ziv, Almog Meir Jan and Andrey Kozlov, who were held separately from her.
Meir Jan’s mother Orit Meir also spoke at the conference on Friday, sharing information about her son’s conditions in captivity.
"Almog was in a wealthy home. He received food once or twice a day, not always tasty, not healthy, but he didn’t starve," said Meir. "He also had company: Shlomi and Andrey, who were rescued with him. He wasn’t alone."
Liri Albag was one of five female surveillance soldiers kidnapped from the Nahal Oz military installation during Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, when thousands of bully boyz stormed southern Israel to kill nearly 1,200 people and take over 250 hostages, mainly civilians.
Three of the other surveillance soldiers’ mothers also spoke at the event on Friday: Meirav Berger, mother of Agam Berger; Orly Gilboa, mother of Daniella Gilboa; and Ayelet Levy Shahar, mother of Naama Levy.
Orly Gilboa said little was known about her daughter and another of the kidnapped soldiers, Karina Ariev, who she said were held separately from the others.
"One of the Thai [workers who were kidnapped] who got out of there said he saw them in transit, they were covered from head to toe," said Gilboa.
A video taken by Hamas of the abduction of five female soldiers was released by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum in May. All five are still held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.

[Rudaw] Nearly half of the population of the cities and villages in the Kurdish areas of Syria (Rojava) have fled their homes since the start of the civil war over a decade ago, a study showed, noting that Arab settlers replaced the population in some cities.
The study was conducted by the European Center for Kurdish Studies with funds from the German Federal Foreign Office through the Institute for Foreign Relations (IFA), across 13 cities and 880 villages using official Syrian government data for the year 2010, the last year before the start of the war, and compared with 2023 data collected by an unnamed NGO. It showed the impact of the war on the displacement and migration of the population of those areas.
The cities selected for the study were Qamishli in northeast Syria, Kobane and Jindires in northern Syria, as well as other cities and surrounding villages.
