DIPLOMATIC SCUFFLE WITH IRAN OVER WATER ESCALATES, QOSH TEPA CANAL COMPLETION COULD WIDEN RIFT REGIONALLY – ‘Water Wars’ refers to national, regional, and international tensions that arise over access to fresh water. The issue is particularly concerning for developing countries as agriculture is typically a pillar in their national economies. The spat between Afghanistan and Iran over water rights to the Helmand River goes back decades and the two have tossed accusations at each other since the matter was supposedly settled with the agreement in 1973. Iran has lodged official complaints year after year that less than 5% of the agreed-upon amount ever flows into the Hamoun basin. Afghanistan has responded (even before the Taliban came to power) that the water levels in the Kajaki Dam are low and must be replenished. Iran has casted doubt on this assertion and continues to request that a joint delegation visit the reservoir to make an assessment. Yesterday, Iran’s Foreign Minister threatened unspecified action if the Helmand River situation was not corrected. While the Helmand River presents an immediate problem, the Qosh Tepa Canal project has much wider implications for regional instability. The construction of a major canal that would provide water to Afghanistan’s dry northern plains has long been a dream. Planners in the region were taken by surprise in January 2023 when the Taliban sanctioned the release of a video showing significant progress on the project. The Qosh Tepa Canal is expected to divert up to 30% of the water from the Amu Darya River and planning figures suggest it could create 250,000 jobs. However, the river is critical to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The problem is already being taken seriously as evidenced by a decree issued by the president of Uzbekistan on 1 April ordering the establishment of water efficiency standards in anticipation of a deepening crisis.
BEWARE OF THESE FAKE AFGHAN RESETTLEMENT ORGANIZATIONS – There are concerns over two organizations that are rumored to be targeting desperate Afghans in Pakistan with resettlement scams to come to the US. The organizations in question are IOMA (acronym undefined) and AARO (Afghanistan-America Relocation Office). The rumors forced the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) to issue a message reminding those working on Afghan refugee cases that no legitimate organization will charge fees for relocation, resettlement, or protection.

PAKISTAN POLICE EXPECTED TO LAUNCH A ‘COUNTER-TERRORISM’ OPERATION TO ARREST ‘TERRORISTS’ HARBORING IN IMRAN KHAN’S HOME IN LAHORE – The raid is reportedly imminent and will focus on arresting between 30 and 40 PTI party followers who are suspected of attacking Army and Police facilities during the chaos of the protests. Khan had been given twenty-four hours to hand the suspects over but the deadline came and went. The acting government for Punjab Province said that it expects the operation to take place ‘soon’. The raid could provoke a new round of protests and if any violence occurs, the protests could easily act as a call to action for the PTI faithful. Khan had dismissed the demand to hand over his followers and told Police that they must use a search warrant if they want access to his home. We do not feel the raid will spark another national outcry similar to what was witnessed on 9 May. However, if casualties result or, the raid is used as a pretext to arrest Khan or members of his household things could deteriorate rapidly.
CABINET PROBE STRIKES FEAR INTO MANY AFGHANS – In a unanimous vote, the Taliban cabinet agreed to launch an investigation into all official contracts that had been signed over the past 20 years. It was not immediately clear if the probe would solely focus on government contracts or would also scrutinize private agreements. Understandably, the announcement has many who remain in Afghanistan nervous. A source who ran a contracting service during the previous regime said that “So many dollars were being flown into Bagram Air Base on American planes that Afghans couldn’t help themselves.” People who had dealings with the US and coalition forces believe they will be targeted and, whether evidence of culpability is found or not, they expect harsh punishments will be meted out by the Taliban. The sheer volume of waste and incompetence by US officials during the Afghanistan War is legendary and the volumes of SIGAR reports that have been filed over the years testify to the corruption that was allowed (some would say - encouraged) to take place. A former construction business owner said that, “No matter what is investigated, or who. The Taliban will use this to settle scores and embarrass those of us who worked for the occupiers.” Such an investigation is a monumental task and it is not clear how well-equipped the Taliban is to conduct forensic accounting on the scale required for this kind of investigation. However, it is likely that whatever results will be made into a public spectacle.
THE UNITED KINGDOM HAS CUT AID TO AFGHANISTAN BY OVER 50% DUE TO BUDGET CUTS – The Independent Commission for Aid Impact reported the budget forecasted for Afghanistan in 2023-24 came in at 100 million pounds. The previous year’s budget was 246 million pounds. The watchdog accused the government of turning its back on the Afghans.
FACEBOOK SCAMMER ARRESTED IN KHOST – An unidentified man was arrested by Taliban security forces for reputedly impersonating a young girl and conning another man into paying him over 5 million Afghanis. Police did not say if the scam involved immoral promises but the individual who reported the crime was reportedly questioned about his messaging activity and is being forced to visit an Imam.
INDIAN ARMY INTERCEPTS DRUG SHIPMENT AT BORDER THAT ORIGINATED IN AFGHANISTAN – A drone carrying 15.5 kgs of unidentified narcotics was shot down by Indian border security forces in the Panjab Armritsar sector. The drone came from Pakistan and a spokeswoman said the narcotics had originated from Afghanistan.

FORMER PM KHAN SAYS HIS HOUSE IS SURROUNDED, ARREST IS IMMINENT – The former PM issued several Tweets about threats of arrest. While a military detachment did cordon off his home, this was reportedly a response to a demand to turn over approximately 30-40 PTI followers who took part in arson and vandalism at military bases. A spokesman for the acting Punjab government said that no arrest warrant had been issued and that police and military forces would honor the High Court’s order that he remain free until 1400hrs local time on Thursday. After the Army roped off Khan’s residence, several PTI supporters began gathering in and around Zaman Park. The situation could rapidly deteriorate after the 1400hrs deadline passes today.

[SAHARAREPORTERS] The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, has said that the button men who ambushed and attacked the diplomatic convoy carrying US Consulate personnel on a humanitarian mission to Anambra on Tuesday are suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its bad boy unit, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Echeng said this on Thursday during a press briefing with journalists in the state.
Regarding the tragic incident, the police commissioner said operatives of the state command had arrested two persons of interest in connection with the bloody attack.
That was fast!
He added that they were already assisting the police with their investigation.
SaharaReporters had reported how button men attacked the US Consulate humanitarian workers on Tuesday at the Amiyi-Eke Ochuche axis in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State, set their vehicles ablaze and killed some of the officials.
Whereas it was reported that a total of four persons were killed in the attack including two coppers, the Commissioner of Police told journalists that seven people were killed including three of the Consulate officials and four Police Mobile personnel while two other officials of the Consulate were still missing.
Echeng said, "A joint team of the Police Mobile Force and troops of the Nigerian Navy stationed in Oloja were immediately deployed to the scene of the incident. Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, the joint security team sighted and engaged the assailants in a shootout but they escaped through the nearby forest.
"On May 17, 2023, joint security forces comprising the police, the Nigerian Army, the Navy and DSS raided a camp in Ugwuaniocha Community of Ogbaru Local Government Area, which was suspected to be the hideout of the assailants, but discovered that the camp had been totally deserted.
"However, nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits... two persons of interest were arrested and are already assisting the police in the investigation. The camp was totally razed down by the troops.
"Preliminary investigations conducted by the Command following the incident revealed that five male officials of the United States Consulate and four PMF personnel escort from Lagos were on a mission to assess the impact of erosion in Ogbaru Local Government and were traveling in a convoy of two vehicles when they suddenly came under attack by the button men who targeted them with gunfire and set their vehicles ablaze.
"Regrettably, seven persons including three of the Consulate officials and four Police Mobile personnel were killed during the attack while two other officials of the Consulate are still missing."
The CP identified the murdered coppers as Inspector Goka Adams, Inspector Friday Morgan, Inspector Adam Andrew and Inspector Emmanuel Lukpata, all of 23 PMF, Lagos.
According to him, no US citizen was killed in the attack.
He noted that information shows that the five US Embassy staff who were involved in the attack include a security officer, drivers and a mechanic.
The remains of the dear departed have all been recovered and deposited in a morgue at Boromi Hospital while police and other security agencies are working with the state government to rescue the missing persons and arrest the perpetrators.
However, nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits... when questioned on the blame by the police that the US Embassy failed to obtain a security pass before entering the state and a violent mostly peaceful community, leading to the death of the officials, the CP simply said that there was no need for a blame game.
He said the Command’s focus is to rescue the missing persons and arrest the assailants.

Local sources in the city stated that the leader, Mahdi bin Muhammad Abdullah Hanishan al-Khulaifi, was subjected to heavy gunfire by a tribal gunman near Arwa School in the center of Ataq city, on the background of a tribal vendetta.

[KavkazUzel] The Tbilisi City Court has sent seven people into custody on charges of supporting the terrorist organization Islamic State*.
The "Caucasian Knot" wrote that on May 17, the State Security Service of Georgia announced the detention of six citizens of the country associated with the terrorist organization "Islamic State." According to the security forces, they planned terrorist attacks in different countries. A special operation to detain suspects was carried out simultaneously in several Georgian cities.
On May 18, a judge of the Tbilisi City Court issued a decision to arrest six Georgian citizens detained during a large-scale special operation by the State Security Service, and another accused, a Turkish citizen.
The prosecution demanded the most severe measure of restraint for everyone, the lawyers offered to release the accused on bail, but the court rejected this proposal, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reported.
The arrested were charged under articles 328 and 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (joining a foreign terrorist organization and assisting terrorist activities, illegal acquisition and possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives). The first article provides for from ten to 17 years in prison, the second - from eight to 11 years.
The lawyer of one of the detained Georgian citizens, Gela Nikoleishvili, said that his client Oruj Mammadov, a native of Bolnisi, was detained in Rustavi.
According to the lawyer, Mammadov is a clergyman and categorically denies any involvement in IS. The materials on the case are classified, the lawyer said on the air of Rustavi 2.

It further said that sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any bandidosfaceless myrmidons found in the area.

Punjab Caretaker Information Minister Amir Mir has said that eight “terrorists”, who were allegedly hiding at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s residence, had been arrested while they were escaping from Lahore’s Zaman Park area.
The detained terrorists were already identified and are allegedly involved in the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander House on May 9, he added.
Speaking to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Civil Lines Hasan Javed earlier said that authorities had confirmed reports regarding the presence of 30 to 40 people inside the Khan’s Zaman Park residence.
He confirmed that eight suspects were taken into custody, who were trying to escape via the nearby canal.
“There are still reports that miscreants are present in Zaman Park,” the SSP said, adding that the final decision regarding conducting the search operation will be taken by the high-ups
The senior police official said other suspects were also trying to flee but they would go back upon seeing the police personnel stationed outside Zaman Park.
Meanwhile, PTI chief Khan urged the “illegal” Punjab interim government to name the terrorists hiding at his residence.
“The reason they didn't was because what they were planning was to bring 30-40 people with them and then accuse me for harbouring terrorists just like last time when they broke into my house through an armoured car and then planted Kalashnikov and petrol bombs,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.

[IsraelTimes] IDF says dozens of suspects hurl explosives at security barrier during violent mostly peaceful protests; no soldiers hurt
Hundreds of Paleostinians in the Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response... Strip protested along the border with Israel on Thursday afternoon, as tensions were high amid the controversial Jerusalem Day Flag March.
A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces told The Times of Israel that dozens of Paleostinians approached the security barrier — built entirely within Israeli territory — and hurled bombs. Many others protested some distance away from the fence.
No soldiers were hurt during the violent mostly peaceful protests.
IDF troops responded with riot dispersal means and in some cases live fire, the spokesperson said.
Footage from the Paleostinian side of the border barrier showed a military drone dropping tear gas grenades on the crowd.
Paleostinian media said several people were treated by medics, without elaborating on their conditions or cause of injury.
The Paleostinian protest on the Gaza border was held in response to the annual nationalist Flag March in the capital on Jerusalem Day, marking Israel’s capture of the city during the 1967 Six Day War.
The controversial parade on Thursday again featured racist chants and scuffles with Paleostinian residents as the largely teenage, religious nationalist participants made their way through the Old City’s Moslem Quarter.
But despite several dozen instances of violence and harassment by Jewish participants, and pre-march threats by Gaza terror groups, the rally managed to conclude without a major incident.
Two years ago, the Gaza-ruling Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, fired a barrage of rockets at Jerusalem to coincide with the march, leading to an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza.
Security officials had believed the chances for rocket fire from Gaza during the march were slim. But some feared a repeat of 2021.
Thursday’s protests on the Gaza border came less than a week after Israel and the terror group Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah.
