Millions of Americans on Social Security are receiving $250 checks as part of the president's stimulus plan -- including an Anne Arundel woman who died more than 40 years ago.
The woman's son, 83-year-old James Hagner, said he got the surprise when he checked his mailbox late last week. "It shocked me and I laughed all at the same time," Hagner said. "I don't even expect to get one my own self, and I get one for my mother for 43 years ago?"
His mother, Rose, died on Memorial Day in 1967. I would not be surprised if she's voted straight ticket in every election since.

Social Security representatives said there is a good explanation. Of the about 52 million checks that have been mailed out, about 10,000 of those have been sent to people who are deceased.
Geez, that's only two and a half million wasted. Damn fine job for a guvmint bureaucracy. Take a bow, Social Security Administration...
The agency blames the error on the strict mid-June deadline of mailing out all of the checks, which didn't leave officials much time to clean up all of their records.
Yeah, she's only been dead since 1967. Take your time, do it right...
Agents ask that people return the check if they receive it.
May I suggest "Bullshit," Mr. I Won? Nah, too scientific ...
Seeking to bolster public support for climate legislation, the Obama administration is consulting pollsters who advocate avoiding phrases such as "cap-and-trade" and "global warming." Here's a novel idea: don't avoid just the phrases, avoid the whole damn thing.
On Monday, the White House Council on Environmental Quality was scheduled to meet with Robert Perkowitz, president of ecoAmerica, a Washington-based nonprofit that uses "psychographic research" to "shift personal and civic choices of environmentally agnostic Americans fool the taxpaying idiots," according to its Web site.
"We're trying to give them phrases that work put lipstick on a polar bear," Mr. Perkowitz said in an interview. He said that in a survey of some 2,000 Americans conducted by his group in March and April, less than half of the respondents said they would support a "cap-and-trade" policy, and that only 24% said they knew what the phrase means. "If you call it 'clean energy dividend'...almost anything other than 'cap and trade,' you'll get people responding a lot more favorably fool a lot more of the rubes," he said. In other words, lie to the American public in order to lull fool them into going along with Bambi's communist programs. Nice. Just remember, Mr. Perkowitz, when the Won doesn't need you anymore, you'll be one of the first to be shot disposed of. Enjoy it while you can.

A wealthy Obama donor who turned on the president is launching an attack on Obama over the Air Force One flyover screw-up, linking it to his big spending policies, an assault that may involve radio and TV ads in a preview of what to expect in the 2010 midterm elections.
The donor, businessman Fred Tausch of New Hampshire, announced in February hed be sinking some $100,000 into assaults on Obama. Now hes adding the flyover snafu to his list of grievances, tying it to wasteful spending in a direct mail piece sent out to his states voters.

A nice chink in Bambi's armor. Much luck to Mr. Tausch. Any chance others will follow?
One question, Mr. Tausch: On what planet did you, as a businessman, ever think Bambi would be good for you and your business?

The article says he is "being talked about" as a Republican Senate candidate for New Hampshire. So why is he giving money- and how much- to the Democrats in '08 and running against them in'10?
Yep pretty high chance come October when all those fiscal years start closing. Obambi was a fad ticket, hes screwing up business all over the place and all those big donors are looking at their own wealth now being on the line for being "re-apportioned" by a "neutral party" (read we take your money and give to people who we can buy votes from). THAT alone will not go over well and you will start to see a lot of major funding going into slapping this administration hard by companies and the wealthy just deciding to simply not work with the administration or in the case of Tausch for example actively campaign against it.
I suspect that you might need to set up a new section for keeping track of this.
I'm just wondering how long it will take Andrew Sullivan to realize that Bambi is going to provide far more support to Taliban and Islamist fundies than he will Andy's pet projects.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi learned in early 2003 that the Bush administration was waterboarding terror detainees but didnt protest directly out of respect for appropriate legislative channels, a confidant of the San Francisco Democrat said Monday.
It only became proper to protest when there was a political opening, and there was no opening to protest the interrogation of terrorists in '03.
The Pelosi camps version of events is intended to answer two key questions posed by her critics: When, precisely, did she first learn about waterboarding? And why didnt she do more to stop it?
Because she agreed with it ...
Pelosi has disputed a CIA document, released last week, that shows she was briefed in September 2002 on the particular interrogation techniques the United States had used on Al Qaeda leader Abu Zubaydah. Pelosi has said she was told then only that the Bush administration was considering using certain techniques in the future and that it had the legal authority to do so.
But theres no dispute that on Feb. 4, 2003 five months after Pelosis September meeting CIA officials briefed Pelosi aide Michael Sheehy and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), then the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, on the specific techniques that had been used on Zubaydah including waterboarding. Harman was so alarmed by what she had heard, she drafted a short letter to the CIAs general counsel to express profound concerns with the tactic going so far as to ask if waterboarding had been personally approved by the president.
According to the Pelosi confidant, Sheehy told Pelosi about the briefing and later informed Pelosi, the newly elected minority leader, that Harman was drafting a protest letter. Pelosi told Sheehy to tell Harman that she agreed with the letter, the Pelosi insider said. But she did not ask to be listed as a signatory on the letter, the source said, and there is no reference to her in it.
Leave no fingerprints just in case ...
Pelosi and Harman, sometimes bitter rivals, have still not discussed the controversy since it broke three weeks ago, according to Democratic insiders.
Sheehy has not responded to several calls and e-mails seeking comment on what he told Pelosi during this period. But the Pelosi confidant who spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity insisted that Pelosi did all that she could have done. She felt that the appropriate response was the letter from Harman, because Jane was the one who was briefed, said the person. Pelosi never got briefed on it personally, and when Harman got a no response from the CIA, there was nothing more that could be done.
Republicans arent buying it. If Nancy was so concerned about the waterboarding, why did she let someone else write the letter? asked Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the ranking Republican on the intelligence committee. If she was so upset, why did she let someone else raise objections?
Bingo. Pelosi was trying to play things both ways. Typical Dhimmicrat ...

and there was a constant drumbeat coming from the Bush administration of, Bad things could happen, bad things could happen.
When in doubt use the old Hypocrites defense. Simply blame your incompetence on your critics. And it might just work. After all, its difficult to argue that Pelosi isnt indeed an incompetent.

The despicable power hungry wrench didn't say anything in '03 because this was still in everyone's mind and would have seen her removed from any position of responsibility had she even mumbled what she thinks she can get away with now.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says it won't stop gays and lesbians from being dismissed from the military while the Obama administration works to repeal a decade-old policy banning openly gay people from serving in uniform.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday that President Barack Obama does not plan to intervene in current cases against men and women who announce their homosexuality.
Gibbs says the president wants to do away with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy through legislation.
Gibbs says the policy does not serve the national interest and that Obama is working with lawmakers for what Gibbs calls a "durable legislative solution." He says a repeal of the policy requires "more than the snapping of one's fingers."
Critics of the policy have called on Obama to stop the dismissals now.

All he has to do is tell Congress to repeal the policy. After all, it was established by Congress.
Does anybody know if an executive order can contradict a law? Could he just issue an executive order to repeal the Don't ask Don't tell law?

Not sure, Rambler, but I doubt an executive order can repeal a law passed by Congress.
No reason that should stop O'Bambi, though. None of our other laws seem to apply to him and his minions....

That's sort of what I meant, Barbara. I don't see why he doesn't just issue an executive order, and make it so.
Of course, those reenlistment rates that have been so high might start to tumble, but that is all part of the plan.
