[Bus Insider] It was March 4, 2002. American special operations forces were fighting to establish observation posts high above Afghanistan's Shah-i-Kot Valley, as conventional troops continued their push through the valley floor below.
One of those men, Air Force Technical Sgt. John Chapman, was alone in the pitch-black, wounded and slowly regaining his consciousness in the thigh-deep snow of a 10,469-foot peak known as Takur Ghar, as scores of Al Qaeda fighters closed in.
For his actions earlier in the battle and for his incredible bravery on that peak, according to sources familiar with the matter, Chapman will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor later this year.
And "Chappy" — as he was known by his teammates — will be the first Air Force service-member to receive the nation's highest award for valor since the Vietnam War.

[The Peninsula] Israeli-American Hollywood actress Natalie Portman has refused to attend a ceremony in Israel to accept a million-dollar prize because of "distressing" events in the country, the organisers said, announcing the prizegiving had been cancelled.
Israel has drawn international criticism in recent weeks for lethal tactics used during festivities with Paleostinians along the border with Gazoo. Thirty-one Paleostinians have been killed and hundreds more maimed. Israel says it is doing what it must to defend its border.
In a statement on its website, the foundation that awards the Genesis Prize quoted a representative for Portman as saying: "Recent events in Israel have been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel."

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army’s elite Tiger Forces are likely to be redeployed to the southwestern countryside of the Idlib Governorate, a military source told al-Masdar News.
According to the source, the Tiger Forces will lead the offensive to retake the strategic town of Jisr al-Shughour, which has been under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat Fateh al-Sham ...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant, now something else... , Jabhat al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... ) and the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP).
Similar to their other offensives in northern Syria, the Tiger Forces will be backed by local militias and the Russian Aerospace Forces.
The Russian military has reportedly been given the green light by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund.... to launch this offensive, since the town is currently under the control of terrorist groups.
While nothing is official yet, the Tiger Forces to the Jisr al-Shughour front would make the most sense for their next deployment because the Russian military wants to secure the Hmaymim Airbase.
As long as the jihadist rebels maintain a presence in the al-Ghaab Plain and Jisr al-Shughour District, their rockets will be able to reach the Hmaymim Airbase and densely populated areas of the Latakia Governorate.

The E. Qalamoun Pocket and the Ghouta Pocket are being reduced currently. The next will, probably?, be the Homs Pocket. As each infestation is 'cleansed' it frees up most of the forces besieging them.
The Jisr al-Shugour District is on the Turkish border. Is Assad ready to send in the SAA against Turkey's puppets?
[AlAhram] The United States is offering a reward of $1 million for information about Austin Tice, an American journalist missing in Syria since 2012.
The FBI announced the reward this week, without any explanation on the timing.
"The timing of this reward is unrelated to any specific event," an FBI spokeswoman said.
Tice, 36, is believed to the only American journalist currently held in Syria, one of the most dangerous countries for the news media in recent years.
A freelance journalist working for McClatchy News, the Washington Post, CBS, AFP and other news organizations, Tice was kidnapped in August 2012 near Damascus.
Tice's family has launched several appeals for information about his whereabouts, saying they believe he is still alive.
In 2016, a #FreeAustinTice banner was attached to the facade of the Newseum, a museum focused on news media and located on the street linking the US Capitol and the White House.
An FBI statement on its website said it would offer the reward "for information leading directly to the safe location, recovery, and return" of Tice.
