[PJMedia] You can’t say we didn’t warn New York what was going to happen if it elected Zohran Mamdani, but I gotta say, I don’t think anyone predicted it would start collapsing so quickly. But, alas, it has. That socialist utopia that Mamdani was supposed to deliver has instead turned into a slow-motion fiscal catastrophe a mere two months in — and even the liberal media is starting to notice.
Mamdani unveiled a $127 billion budget for fiscal year 2027 this week — a staggering $5 billion increase over the prior year.
But what's $5 billion between socialists, right?
To put that into perspective, Mamdani’s proposed budget is actually larger than the budgets of 47 U.S. states, including Florida, which has nearly twice the population. And somehow, it still isn't enough. The city is staring down a $5.4 billion deficit, with the real gap potentially closer to $12 billion when you do the actual math.
So what was his plan? Tax someone else.
Mamdani went straight to Albany looking for a handout, demanding that Gov. Kathy Hochul raise taxes on the "ultra-wealthy" and the most profitable corporations. When Hochul told him to pound sand and cut spending instead, he obviously couldn’t do that, and now he is looking at saddling homeowners with a 9.5% property tax hike.
"Faced with no other choice, the city would have to exercise the only revenue lever fully within our own control," he said. "We would have to raise property taxes. We would also be forced to raid our reserves. To balance the budget as required by law, our preliminary budget takes the only path within our control: the second path. The options of the second path are the options of last resort. Options that we will only employ if there is no other means of arriving at a balanced budget."
As a New York resident, I can say there’s finally something I can agree with Hochul on. Why should the rest of the state subsidize Mamdani’s socialist experiment in New York City? Let it foot the bill for the mistake of electing Mamdani. Remember, this is the guy who campaigned on affordability and making the rich "pay their fair share," and now he’s already in a position where he has to tax regular people to cover the costs of his promises.
This budget crisis he’s facing two months into his term comes on top of him taking heat for poor trash cleanup and snow removal on his watch. Two months into the job, and the basics aren't getting done.
Conservatives warned about exactly this before last year's election. We said a self-described democratic socialist running one of the world's most financially complex cities was a recipe for disaster. Voters in New York went ahead anyway. Now the city faces the reckoning that was entirely predictable.
"No one in New York is ambitious enough to dramatically reshape city government, and residents either vote for class warfare or vote with their feet," the Washington Post editorial board observed. "A reckoning will have to come eventually. The question is how bad it gets before reality sets in."
[PJMedia] New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani gave a speech about how the Koran allegedly describes Moslem support for immigrants colonists. In his often-repeated speech, he tells the story of Mohammad’s flight from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, known as the hijrah. The implication is that Moslems were themselves refugees, so Islam is supportive of immigrants colonists.
As I listened to the speech, I suspected that something of importance was being left out. Robert Spencer, author and director of Jihad Watch and an editor at PJ Media, explains what was omitted. "The hijrah is not an example of the welcoming of the [Moslem] migrants colonists," says Spencer, "but of the conquering by the migrants colonists of the host community. What we have is a migration that was done in order to assume political and military power."
When Muhammad arrived in Medina, he demanded that the local inhabitants convert to Islam. They refused, so he massacred three Jewish tribes. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, had their heads chopped off. He went on to do the same to the rest of Arabia. "It was a very shameful and bloody episode in our history," said Egyptian writer Dalia Ziada. Mamdani conveniently neglected to mention any of that in his address.
Most Moslems are familiar with the story of the hijrah, so they undoubtedly recognize the true import of Mamdani’s speech. Non-Moslems miss the point entirely. The question is, what was Mamdani’s intention?
Spencer believes that Mamdani deliberately omitted the part where Moslems massacred Jews. "There is no way he does not mean this as a warning to the Jews of New York," said Spencer, "that he is going to be fostering mass Moslem migration into New York and he expects it to shake out exactly as it did when Mohammad moved to Medina." Most Jewish New Yorkers have no idea what Mamdani is doing. They think he is just quoting his religious tradition to foster tolerance, when in fact he is threatening the entire New York Jewish community.

Newsom's office defended his comments in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Newsom, who is on the road promoting his new memoir, "Young Man in a Hurry," is considered a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president in 2028 as most pundits believe he has his eyes on the White House.
After publication, Dickens's office responded to a request for comment by pointing to an Instagram post where the mayor defended Newsom.
"Take it from someone who was actually in the chair asking the questions: context matters more than a headline. The conversation around his new book included him speaking about his own academic struggles, including not doing well on the SAT," Dickens wrote.

[NY Post] California Governor Gavin Newsom pardoned a convicted attempted murderer who was an undocumented illegal immigrant, opening the possibility for him staying in the country, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Somboon Phaymany was convicted of numerous charges, including attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, assault with a firearm, and conspiracy to commit assault with a firearm after a judge sentenced him in 1997 to 14 years to life.
In December 2025, Newsom pardoned him for transforming his life and providing "evidence that he is living an upright life and has demonstrated his fitness for restoration of civic rights and responsibilities."
DHS said the pardon allows Phaymany to "re-open immigration proceedings rather than be removed from the U.S. and will be able to remain in California communities."
"Governor Newsom pardoning an illegal alien convicted of attempted murder, so he can remain in our country is absolute INSANITY," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. "These are the criminal illegal aliens he and his sanctuary politicians are protecting. He is putting the lives of all Americans at risk."
That’s a state level pardon for breaking state laws. Surely it has no effect at the federal level.
