| RETRO/2016: How And Why The Media Failed The Public |
| 2026-11-04 |
[Forbes] The media is under attack for mis-covering the U.S. elections - indeed for failing to see the mood of the American public. As the new White House Chief Strategist – former head of the alt-right Brieitbart news site Steve Bannon - told the Hollywood Reporter recently:
"The media bubble is the ultimate symbol of what's wrong with this country…It's just a circle of people talking to themselves who have no [expletive] idea what's going on. ... It's a closed circle of information from which Hillary Clinton got all her information – and her confidence. That was our opening."
In broadcasting at least, that opening began when controls on radio and TV ownership came off and broadcasters no longer were required by law to prove that their operations reflected the concerns of their broadcast coverage area in order to obtain a broadcast license. The ability to influence became centralized in the hands of fewer people who were under no obligation to render public service or even canvass the public. |
