Can Yemeni IRG forces really defeat the Houthis?
2026-10-18
[ACLEDdata] On the mixed results of the government’s offensive against the Houthis, the military imbalance between the two sides, and the growing risk of a prolonged conflict.

“This week, fighting continues at heightened levels inside Yemen after the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) announced its offensive to retake the whole country and topple the Houthi government in Sanaa. So far, the results of this offensive have been a mixed bag for the IRG.

“On Yemen’s West Coast front, the IRG-affiliated Southern Giants Brigades forces have failed to advance beyond their initial gains in the Dhubab district, where they are still engaged in daily fighting with the Houthis near the city of Dhubab. Other IRG forces suffered successive defeats on the Taiz front, nearly losing the entire governorate.

The Houthis encircled Taiz city – Yemen's third-largest city — besieging it and cutting it off from the rest of the IRG-held areas of the country. Only on the Marib front did IRG forces continue to make gains, inching closer to Sanaa.

By 9 October, IRG forces claimed they had seized a number of strategic locations and military camps from the Houthis in the contested western and northwestern districts of Marib governorate. Nonetheless, these gains seem modest in comparison to the lists of thousands of claimed attacks and casualties inflicted on the Houthis published by the IRG military on a near-daily basis.
