Afghan Asylum Seeker Accused of UK Murder Given Indefinite Mental Hospital Order
2026-10-08
[KhaamaPress] An Afghan man who fatally stabbed a 49-year-old dog walker in a random knife attack in west London has been ordered to remain indefinitely in a secure psychiatric hospital after a court found he was in a psychotic state at the time of the attack.

Dawood Safi, 28, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Wayne Broadhurst on the grounds of diminished responsibility. The court heard that Safi attacked Broadhurst on October 27, 2025, in Midhurst Gardens in Uxbridge, shortly after attacking his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh.

Broadhurst, who worked as a street cleaner for Ealing Council, was walking his dog when Safi attacked him. Prosecutors said the two men had no previous relationship and that Broadhurst had the "terrible misfortune" of passing the scene during the attack. He was stabbed 14 times and died at the scene. A teenage boy was also injured.

The court heard that Safi’s mental health had deteriorated sharply in the days before the attack. Evidence presented to the court described paranoid delusions and hearing voices, while the judge found that he had been in a psychotic state when the stabbings occurred. The Crown Prosecution Service accepted his manslaughter plea after considering psychiatric evidence.

Safi was also convicted of attempting to murder his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, after a jury found him guilty of the charge. He had admitted causing actual bodily harm to the teenage boy and possessing an offensive weapon. Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on a separate attempted-murder charge involving the teenager, and prosecutors decided not to pursue a retrial.

The judge recommended that Safi be deported from the United Kingdom, saying his continued presence in the country was detrimental, but the final decision rests with the Home Secretary. Safi is to remain in secure psychiatric care indefinitely for treatment.

Court proceedings also heard that Safi entered Britannia in 2020 and initially claimed to be 17 years old. He was later granted asylum in 2022. His immigration history was discussed during the proceedings alongside evidence concerning his deteriorating mental health.
