[Regnum] A mass grave containing the bodies of people who died during the COVID-19 pandemic was discovered in a cemetery in the Romanian city of Slatina. The burial was disguised as a crypt, Mayor Mario De Mezzo told Agerpress.
The burial date was indicated on the bags containing the remains, of which there were 19.
"During excavations at the cemetery, human bones were discovered, as well as bags containing undecomposed bodies left behind by the COVID-19 pandemic. These are special bags, similar to those used during the pandemic, and they were discovered after additional examination and seized by police," the city's mayor told reporters.
Mezzo also stated that such a mass grave violated cemetery regulations; the deceased should have been buried in coffins, each one individually. He explained that the remains were discovered after cemetery administration decided to remodel one of the crypts.
For the past 16 years, the Slatina cemetery was managed by a private service. Local authorities sued the cemetery administration to return it to the municipal property registry. In September, the court ruled in favor of the mayor's office, leading to the development of the area.
