[Regnum] The European Commission will propose banning children under 13 from accessing social media. This was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen from the European Parliament in Strasbourg on September 16.

This means that from 13 to 15, only mini-accounts created and managed by parents or guardians will be allowed, with limited functionality and a usage time of up to one hour per day," von der Leyen noted.
She added that the European Commission will protect children according to their age. The initiative was developed after consultations with experts and young people, as well as studying the experience of Australia and other countries.
Australia became the first country in the world to ban social media use for people under 16. The new law came into effect on December 10, 2025. As a result, 10 major platforms were ordered to block access to teenagers or face fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
Spain, Malaysia, and the Maldives have announced similar measures. Indonesia has also imposed restrictions on social media use by children under 16.
