| [Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A Canadian woman avoided a jail sentence after her two Cane Corsos mauled her roommate's 11-year-old son to death because she previously experienced racism. Crystal MacDonald, 46, was found guilty earlier this year of criminal negligence over the death of Kache Grist, 11, who died inside her Edmonton, Alberta, home in 2024. According to CTV News, MacDonald, who is of Indigenous heritage, was given two years of house arrest in relation to the death of the boy, as well as 200 hours community service. Prosecutors had asked for MacDonald to be given five years in prison. But Justice Eric Macklin opted for a non-custodial sentence after being told of an 'Indigenous Background Report' which detailed sexual abuse and racist discrimination MacDonald had suffered while growing up. Canada has faced increasing accusations of imposing two-tier justice over instances of convicts being handed lighter sentences because of their ethnic background. Kache was killed in April 2024 while visiting his father Wesley, who was MacDonald's roommate. Wesley previously testified that he was cleaning tools in the garage when Kache went inside to play a new video game. When he entered the house, he found his son lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor with the two dogs, Khaos and Kairo, standing nearby. MacDonald previously said during her trial that the beasts had also previously mauled her neighbor and killed two other pets - a Pomeranian and a cat. An autopsy found that the boy had died from bite injuries to his neck, the dogs were later euthanized. As well as the house arrest and community service, MacDonald was also given a lifetime ban of owning a dog, the outlet reported. She can appeal that ban in 10 years. Her lawyer told the court: 'She is deeply sorry for the pain and unimaginable harm she’s caused to many. This whole process has been extremely emotional for her. 'The issue in this case was never whether the dogs caused Kache’s death, the issue is whether she was legally responsible for that death.'
But MacDonald said Grist ignored her warning and arrived at the house with his son anyway. She testified that she repeatedly told Grist not to leave Kache alone with the dogs and warned the boy that the animals had previously attacked both people and pets. MacDonald also tried to board the dogs at a kennel during Kache’s visit, but they were turned away because they did not have the required vaccinations. The day before he died, MacDonald hid Easter eggs filled with chocolate and money around the house for Kache. On the day of the attack, she said she placed the dogs in their kennels before leaving for work.
Grist said he never wanted Dire Revenge for Kache’s death and MacDonald will also carry the weight of the boy’s death. "The court has legal responsibilities and sentencing considerations they must follow, and I respect that," he said. "I also feel compelled to express honestly that I do not personally believe additional suffering, incarceration or destruction will heal what has already happened." During MacDonald’s trial, Grist testified that he was in the garage when his son was killed. He had allowed Kache to go inside to play with a new video game while he finished cleaning up tools. About 45 minutes later, Grist found his son lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor with the dogs surrounding him. | ||
