The clashes are still ongoing in the town of Masango and surrounding areas in South Kivu province. Congolese forces announced on Thursday, Sep. 3, that the national army recaptured Masango, Ruhua, and Rubarati after defeating M23/AFC rebels and their Twirwaneho allies in the Hauts Plateaux of Mwenga in South Kivu. Reagan Mbuyi Kalonji, the army spokesperson for Operation Sukola 2 in South Kivu, said these major advances resulted from serious military operations in the zones. “Following our major response against the terrorist coalition of the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) and their allies of the M23, Twirwaneho and Red Tabara in the Hauts Plateaux of Uvira and Fizi, the FARDC have neutralised 23 rebels, 11 others surrendered, and several weapons were recovered,” Reagan said.
