The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, August 14, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter, that Musk has recommitted to Republican political efforts after a bitter public split with Trump last year. The newspaper reported that Musk’s focus is on encouraging Trump supporters who typically vote in presidential elections to participate in the midterms as well.
Musk, who was once one of Trump’s most prominent political allies, fell out with the president in 2025 after disagreements over government policy and spending. Their relationship has since improved, although Trump has privately indicated that it may never return to the level of closeness they previously had, according to the Journal.
Behind the scenes, mutual friends and political allies helped repair the relationship. The two have resumed communication and are reported to speak roughly once a month about issues including artificial intelligence, China and international affairs.
The renewed relationship could have significant political implications for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, when all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are scheduled to be contested.
Musk has already demonstrated his ability and willingness to spend heavily in U.S. elections. His political operation spent roughly $200 million to support Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, while a Wall Street Journal report said Musk spent nearly $300 million during the 2024 election cycle to support Trump and other Republicans.
The Journal reported that Musk’s renewed support could help Republicans defend their narrow congressional majorities. Republicans also have an incentive to maintain ties with Musk because companies he controls, including SpaceX, have substantial government relationships and could face greater congressional scrutiny if Democrats

Democrats have already indicated that they plan to investigate companies and financial entities connected to Trump and Musk if they win control of the House. Rooters reported last week that Democratic politicians are preparing investigations into Trump-linked businesses, government contractors and companies owned by Musk.
Musk has largely abandoned an earlier idea of creating a new political party and is instead returning his attention to Republican candidates and voter mobilization.
