4 years after the 2022 truce, the Yemen war 🇾🇪 resumes, with a new strategic equation
In 2022, the Houthi rebels (pro-Iranian 🇮🇷) and the coalition (pro-Saudi government 🇸🇦 and pro-Emirati STC 🇦🇪) signed a truce agreement, temporarily putting an end to the civil war that has been devastating the country since 2011.
This year 2026 has seen a dramatic shift in the Yemeni situation. As early as December 2025, the STC (Southern Transitional Council), backed by the United Arab Emirates, had attempted a forcible takeover of power, declaring the independence of South Yemen. The attempt was thwarted in January 2026 by the government supported by Saudi Arabia, which regained control of the entire South Yemen and dissolved the STC.
The Houthi rebels, for their part, waged a war against Israel and the United States between 2023 and 2025, regularly striking ships in the Red Sea. Since the American operation in Iran, the Houthis have been more cautious. Nevertheless, in recent weeks, the movement has organized a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, striking the Kingdom on numerous occasions.
In response, Saudi Arabia has bolstered its resources in Yemen in preparation for a government offensive against the Houthis. Heavy artillery bombardments, as well as increasingly frequent drone strikes, are taking place on various fronts, particularly in Marib and Taiz. Government forces are making extensive use of bomber drones, while the rebels are relying more heavily on FPV drones, some of which are equipped with fiber optics.
The resumption of war across all fronts appears to be drawing nearer in Yemen, with drones this time serving as the new strategic equation.
How have Houthi-Saudi tensions evolved in the last month?
[ACLEDdata] On 9 August, the Houthis continued their escalatory attacks in the region with the launching of dozens of drones, WBIEDs, and missiles against the IRG-held port city of Mocha in the contested Al-Hodeidah governorate, claiming to target Saudi forces there. While IRG forces managed to intercept at least 11 attack drones, the attack killed seven people - including three civilians - injured up to 30, and caused material damage to the city’s port and other infrastructure in the area. On the same day, the Houthis also launched drones targeting an Aramco oil facility in Jizan port city in Saudi Arabia, causing a fire.

13–14 July: Saudi Arabia conducts airstrikes on Sanaa airport and Sadah, prompting Houthi retaliation via drone and missile attacks directed at Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia.15–23 July: Houthis announce a naval blockade against Saudi shipping and launch strikes on Saudi oil tankers, including the first confirmed attack on a Saudi ship (Encelia) during this escalation on 22 July.
24 July: Houthis continue targeting Saudi-linked ships, leading to further Saudi airstrikes inside Yemen.
25–26 July: Houthi forces target energy infrastructure with missile and drone launches towards Yanbu and Jazan facilities, triggering additional Saudi retaliatory strikes.
27 July – 9 August: Houthis intensify attacks against Saudi energy infrastructure, culminating in an 9 August attack on Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery, as well as strikes on Mocha port and city in Yemen that killed seven people and damaged civilian infrastructure.

The attacks killed seven people and caused an estimated $16 million in losses, the director told a news conference.
Mocha is a Red Sea port near the Bab el-Mandab strait, a strategic chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and a key route for international shipping. The port is controlled by forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government. It has a smaller cargo capacity than Yemen’s main ports of Aden and Hodeidah.
Yemen’s government said on Friday the Houthis fired six ballistic missiles at Mocha that day, killing at least four civilians and targeting civilian, economic and maritime facilities.
The Houthis said they targeted a military build-up of weapons and warships belonging to Saudi-backed forces in Mocha.
The escalation comes amid the heightened regional tensions between the United States and Iran and has raised concerns about a return to large-scale conflict in Yemen.
Major fighting in Yemen had largely subsided following a UN-brokered truce in 2022, but efforts to reach a lasting political settlement have stalled.
