CENTCOM said in a statement that, in addition to redirecting the vessels, U.S. forces had disabled three ships and boarded two others as part of efforts to enforce the blockade.
The command said the operations were intended to ensure compliance with restrictions on maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports. It described the measures as part of its continuing enforcement of the blockade.
The latest figure represents an increase from 55 commercial vessels reported as redirected earlier this week, indicating that the U.S. campaign is continuing despite uncertainty over efforts to ease the confrontation.
The standoff is also affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Rooters reported this week that only a small number of vessels were transiting the waterway, compared with typical traffic of about 130 to 140 vessels a day before the conflict.
The disruption has raised concerns over global oil and gas supplies, shipping costs and insurance premiums. The Strait normally carries a significant share of global energy trade, making prolonged restrictions a potential source of wider economic pressure.
