| [X] 🚨 Islamic Republic media is raging against the Mecca defense pact as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan build a powerful new regional security bloc. Kayhan, the hardline newspaper overseen by Khamenei’s representative, has lashed out at the pact because it threatens the regime’s regional strategy. For decades, the Islamic Republic has exploited regional divisions and projected power through Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iraqi militias, allowing it to pressure individual states through proxies. The Mecca pact could significantly alter that calculus. Saudi Arabia brings financial and geopolitical weight, Turkey major conventional military power and a defense industry, and Pakistan a large military and nuclear deterrence. If the mutual-defense commitment proves meaningful [big IF] in practice, proxy aggression against one member could carry the risk of drawing in the others. The irony is stark: decades of Islamic Republic expansionism may now be helping create the regional security architecture designed to contain it. |
