[Regnum] A magnetic storm will begin on Earth on July 22 due to a coronal hole on the Sun. This was announced on July 20 by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to scientists, solar activity will begin on the night of July 21-22 and last for about 24 hours. Storms of G1-G2 intensity may form at their peak. The probability of strong storms of G3 intensity and higher is about 5%.
"Amidst the unusually low geomagnetic activity this summer, some 'entertainment' is expected in two days: another solar coronal hole is approaching Earth, with a stream of fast winds expected to reach the planet on July 22," the institution's Telegram channel stated.
On July 7, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced the end of one of the strongest solar activity outbursts of 2026. It followed a mild scenario, with only two flares receiving the maximum rating.
On the night of June 11-12, a weak magnetic storm occurred on Earth. The disturbances were caused by a stream of high-speed solar wind from a coronal hole on the Sun.
According to the forecast of laboratory director Sergei Bogachev, solar activity will continue to decline, but the number of magnetic storms will remain significant over the next two years. They should cease completely by 2028–2031.
