| [MAIL] British holidaymakers have been warned that they could face up to five-hour long queues at border controls in Europe this summer. Aviation chiefs said that airports could descend into 'complete standstill' thanks to new rules for non-EU visitors. There are now urgent calls to pause the recently introduced Entry-Exit-System (EES) until September over fears it is 'unsustainable' for the major influx of 40million more passengers who are expected to descend onto Europe's airports this summer. The EES sees non-EU citizens having their fingerprints and photos taken when they first enter its borders, with these details checked again on their departure, resulting in lengthy waits. The European aviation sector (ACI) sent an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen where they pleaded for her intervention ahead of the holiday getaway rush, highlighting the recent havoc in airports which has seen passengers miss flights due to the internal delays. The EES has been 'creating severe operational consequences disrupting passengers and putting border authorities, airports and airlines under unsustainable pressure', the group said. Since its rollout in April following several delays, 'waiting times at border control have increased significantly, now reaching up to five hours during peak traffic periods'. Reverting to standard Schengen border checks was a possible solution, including passport stamping. |
