[REGNUM.RU] On July 5, the Sun broke a two-year record for the number of solar flares in a single day. This was reported by researchers from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on their Telegram channel.
According to them, scientists recorded 24 flares of category C or higher (UTC) within 24 hours. When calculated in Moscow time, the figure was 26 flares. These figures were the highest in the past two years.
Meanwhile, the magnetic storm that occurred on July 4th, the second most powerful this year, has completely ended. All geomagnetic indices and solar wind parameters have returned to normal, astronomers explained.
Scientists noted that these events are currently of purely scientific interest and pose no threat to Earth. Large sunspot groups, including object #4478, have finally moved westward and are retreating to the far side of the celestial body. Experts expect a decline in X-ray fluxes. According to astronomers' calculations, these sunspot groups may return to the field of view around July 20th, but the likelihood of them persisting for two weeks is minimal.
Earlier, on July 4, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences recorded a strong magnetic storm of G3 level on Earth, which became the second most powerful since the beginning of the year.
