UK unveils biggest defence spending increase in decades
2026-07-01
[KhaamaPress] British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the country’s largest defence investment in decades, pledging to sharply increase military spending in response to what he described as a more dangerous and unstable global security environment.

Speaking on Tuesday, Starmer said the plan would raise defence spending from 2.3% to 2.7% of gross domestic product, with a long-term goal of reaching 3% and eventually 4.2%. The government will allocate an additional £15 billion, taking total defence spending over the next four years to nearly £300 billion.

Starmer said Britannia faces growing security challenges, citing the war in Ukraine, instability in the Middle East, rising living costs and emerging cross-border threats. He stressed that the investment was intended to "prevent war, not start one."

The plan will increase annual defence spending from about £54 billion to nearly £80 billion by 2029. Funding will come partly from scaling back selected infrastructure and energy projects while improving procurement and efficiency within the Ministry of Defence.

The investment package includes strengthening Britannia’s nuclear deterrent, expanding capabilities in drones, the Royal Navy, the Army and next-generation air power, while reinforcing the country’s commitments to NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
The announcement comes as European governments continue to increase military spending following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and growing concerns over wider regional conflicts. NATO members have faced sustained pressure to raise defence budgets and strengthen collective deterrence against evolving security threats.

British officials have argued that higher defence investment is also expected to support domestic manufacturing, defence industries and technological innovation, describing the strategy as an investment in both national security and long-term economic resilience.
