| Sheikh Hasina vows return to Bangladesh despite death sentence |

She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia showed such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums. That is probably because Khaleda's late husband was the Pak tool who had Mujib assassinated... has pledged to return to Bangladesh this year despite being sentenced to death in absentia, saying she would overcome "every obstacle and conspiracy" to return to her country. Speaking to Indian broadcaster NDTV from exile in India, the 78-year-old former prime minister dismissed the court ruling as politically motivated and accused Bangladesh’s judiciary of being used as a tool of political Dire Revenge. She said she was not afraid of death and described her planned return as an effort to restore democracy and the rule of law rather than pursue personal power. Hasina fled to India in August 2024 after nationwide student-led protests forced her government from office, ending more than a decade in power. Bangladesh’s interim authorities later launched multiple investigations into alleged abuses committed during the unrest, including accusations that security forces used excessive force against protesters. The political crisis has deepened divisions in Bangladesh, where the interim administration says legal proceedings against former officials are aimed at ensuring accountability. Supporters of Hasina and the Awami League argue the cases are politically driven and have called for the party’s restrictions to be lifted and detained members to be released. Hasina also urged the current government to remove restrictions on the Awami League, withdraw what she described as fabricated cases against its members and free political prisoners. The Bangladeshi authorities maintain that the judicial process is independent and forms part of broader efforts to address alleged crimes committed during her administration.
