ANALYSIS | Iraq's corruption sweep: the regional fallout to watch.
The two blocs getting hit hardest, Azm and Taqaddum, happen to be the Sunni outfits with the best lines into Ankara, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Those are relationships those capitals spent years building so they'd have someone to call in Baghdad. Take out Samarrai and Karbouli, leave Halbousi hanging, and you've thinned the network the Gulf and Turkey rely on. Don't expect anyone to say so out loud, though. Nobody wants to be the government caught defending men charged with stealing public money.
Turkey has the most to lose here in real terms. Water, the Development Road, the PKK question, a lot of that runs through Sunni middlemen, and a weakened Sunni leadership leaves Ankara short of contacts at the worst possible time. The Saudis and Emiratis had bet on Halbousi as the Sunni they could work with. If his people get picked off, that bet looks a lot worse, and it's happening while the whole region is fixed on the war with Iran.
