[Regnum] Construction of the new Yasen-M-class multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine "Murmansk" has begun. The Russian Ministry of Defense press service reported this on June 17.
The cruiser was laid down at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk.
"Submarine forces are an important component of the Russian Navy, security, and sovereignty. We will undoubtedly implement their construction programs," said Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, during the cruiser's keel-laying ceremony.
The submarines of this project are modern, effective naval combat systems capable of solving the entire spectrum of Navy combat missions, independently or as part of diverse fleet groups, in virtually any region of the World Ocean, while remaining undetectable to others, the commander-in-chief emphasized.
The lead nuclear submarine of this project, the Kazan, was delivered to the Navy in 2021. Three more submarines—Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Arkhangelsk—were subsequently built and commissioned. Construction of several more nuclear-powered submarines is ongoing. The Yasen-M-class submarines are equipped with long-range, high-precision missiles.
In July 2025, President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian fleet would be equipped according to the most modern technical standards. The head of state noted that 70 warships are under construction at shipyards, including the latest nuclear submarines.
