[Regnum] Experts recorded an ash plume reaching an altitude of 9 km above sea level on the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka Krai. The Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported this on its website on June 12.
The ash plume was recorded at 9:22 AM local time (6:22 PM Moscow time). The Shiveluch volcano's activity is considered dangerous for domestic and international air travel. The natural giant has been assigned a red alert, the highest aviation hazard code.
Shiveluch, at 3,283 meters, is the northernmost active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula, dating back 60,000 to 70,000 years. It is located 50 km from the village of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky District and 450 km from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
On June 8, the Kamchatka Krai Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that Shiveluch had ejected an ash plume reaching a height of 10 km. Rescuers recommend closing windows and doors during ashfall, avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, and using respirators or wet dressings with baking soda. Specialists are monitoring the situation.
On May 18, Shiveluch volcano ejected an ash plume reaching a height of 6.5 km. The ash cloud then spread southeastward. A Code Orange aviation hazard was issued. On March 13, Shiveluch ejected an ash plume reaching a height of 8 km. The cloud then moved northeastward toward the Bering Sea.
