[Regnum] The death toll from the earthquake in the Philippines has risen to 32, the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported on June 8.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck this morning off the coast of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. The epicenter was 58 kilometers from the city of General Santos (population: approximately 679,000). The earthquake's center was located at a depth of 45 to 57 kilometers, Xinhua reported.
The main shock was followed by a series of more than 100 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 1.3 to 6.7. Within two hours, at least 11 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 4.8 to 6.5, were recorded.
A tsunami warning has been issued in the Philippines. Residents of coastal areas in nine provinces have been advised to evacuate immediately.
A tsunami warning was also issued for six Japanese prefectures on June 8. Seismologists warned that wave heights of up to one meter are expected off the coast.
