The father of the deceased child, Bethlehem University professor Fahd Abu Haikal, told reporters that the incident occurred during daylight hours, and Israeli soldiers could not have failed to see that the car contained a family with children. He demanded that the soldier who killed his child be held accountable.
The Israeli army stated that the driver of the vehicle failed to stop when ordered, and one of the soldiers fired several single shots. The IDF also stated that an investigation into the incident was underway.

In March, for example, Israeli police opened fire on a car carrying a Palestinian family with their children as they were returning from a store. The couple and their two sons, ages five and seven, were killed instantly, and the two older children were wounded. According to one of the boys, the shooting began without warning, and afterward, Israeli police officers pulled the child from the car and began taunting him, claiming they had "killed dogs."
An Israeli police spokesman stated that the family was killed during a special operation and that security forces allegedly opened fire on the car when they "perceived an immediate threat," but did not answer questions about the specific threat posed by the children and unarmed adults.
