Iran’s Fars News Agency reported on Saturday that the vessel, identified as belonging to the U.S.-based shipping company Arista, was detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for allegedly violating navigation laws and transit regulations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media published images of the vessel and said the seizure occurred after Iranian forces detected what they described as unauthorized movements through the waterway. The report said four tankers attempted to leave the strait under the "guidance and encouragement" of the U.S. military.
According to the IRGC account cited by Fars, one vessel was intercepted and stopped while three others turned back. Iranian authorities did not immediately provide further details about the ship, its crew or cargo.
The United States had not publicly confirmed the seizure or commented on Iran’s claims as of Saturday.
The incident comes after weeks of military tensions in the Gulf, where U.S. and Iranian forces have engaged in a series of confrontations. Earlier this week, U.S. Central Command said American forces shot down four Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz and later struck Iranian coastal radar sites, saying the drones posed an immediate threat to maritime traffic.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a focal point of regional tensions since the escalation of hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Iranian authorities have said ships require authorization to transit the strategic waterway, through which a significant share of the world’s oil exports passes each day.
The latest seizure also comes as indirect diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington continue. Both sides have been exploring ways to reduce tensions and prevent a broader regional conflict, although no comprehensive agreement has yet been announced.
