According to police, the operation led to the seizure of 1.035 kilograms of heroin, five pistols and 500,000 Indian rupees suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking activities. Authorities said the network maintained links with individuals based outside India and used social media platforms to coordinate the procurement, transportation and distribution of narcotics and weapons. Preliminary investigations indicate that members of the group received instructions from handlers abroad before distributing drugs and firearms within India, police said. One of the suspects, identified as Baz Mohammad, is an Afghan citizen who was residing in New Delhi. Police said he had previously been arrested in connection with narcotics-related offenses and allegedly played a managerial role within the network. Officials added that two other suspects also had prior records linked to drug-related crimes. Police said investigations are continuing into the group’s financial operations, including suspected money-transfer channels used to move proceeds from illegal activities. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend additional individuals connected to the network. Punjab, which borders Pakistain, has long been a focal point for anti-narcotics operations due to its proximity to international trafficking routes. Indian authorities have repeatedly raised concerns about the smuggling of heroin, synthetic drugs and illegal weapons through cross-border networks operating in the region. Indian security agencies have in recent years intensified efforts to disrupt trafficking syndicates that use encrypted messaging services and social media platforms to coordinate operations. Authorities say such networks increasingly rely on digital communication and transnational contacts to move drugs, weapons and illicit funds across borders. The latest arrests come as law enforcement agencies across India continue investigations into organized criminal groups involved in narcotics trafficking and associated financial crimes. Groups sometimes coopted by Pakistan’s ISI for their anti-India jihadis. |
