Major Assassination in Yemen: Brig. Gen. Yahya Wahish, commander of the First Division of the National Resistance Forces, was killed after an IED targeted his convoy on Yemen’s western coast.
According to military sources, the explosion wounded Wahish and several of his escorts. He and one escort later died in hospital, while two others were injured.
Wahish a Salafi commander, was appointed commander of the First Division last month as part of a military reorganization. He was a veteran commander who had fought against the Houthis since 2013 and played a key role in operations along the western coast.

Yahya Abdullah Wahish, the commander of the "First Division" in the forces led by Tariq Saleh, died instantly in the blast. Wahish, who is closely affiliated with the Islah party, had recently been appointed to his position as part of a restructuring process of armed factions in southern and eastern Yemen

While no group has grabbed credit for the attack, sources close to the late commander indicated that his appointment had sparked internal tensions with Tariq Saleh. The ongoing restructuring follows a shift in territorial influence, as Saudi Arabia

Formerly dictatorial and steeped in Olde Tyme Religion, deferring to Salafist holy men on all issues, it has now done a 180 and is making a serious effort to modernize, so as not to be left in the sand by its Gulf Arab neighbors. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start...consolidates its control over these strategic regions.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, though security in the volatile coastal strip remains highly precarious.
