The tremors occurred at 12:12 AM local time (1:12 AM Moscow time). The epicenter was 22 km west-southwest of Paola and 124 km north of Messina. The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 240 km.
There were no reports of casualties or damage.
Earlier, on May 25, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 was recorded in Chile. The epicenter was located 25 km southeast of the city of Calama in Antofagasta Province, with the center at a depth of 103 km. No damage or casualty information was provided.
