[Regnum] Pirates have seized a tanker loaded with oil products off the northeastern coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean. This was reported on May 31 by the Somali television channel Dalsan.
It is specified that the vessel was detained by unidentified persons in the waters between the coastal towns of Hafun and Bandarbeila in the Bari region of Puntland province, while it was traveling with cargo from the port city of Berbera in Somaliland to the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO) confirmed the attack on the vessel. According to preliminary reports, the tanker belongs to a Pakistani businessman.
Authorities are not disclosing the exact number of crew members on board the vessel or their nationalities. The circumstances of the tanker's hijacking are being investigated.
Earlier, armed men hijacked an oil tanker off the coast of Yemen. The pirates boarded the vessel, seized it, and sailed it toward the Gulf of Aden, heading for Somalia. Later, thanks to prompt action by the coast guard, the vessel's precise coordinates were determined. Efforts are currently underway to recover it.
