Text: Al-Shabaab is reportedly considering leaving Al-Qaeda. Growing reports indicate that Al-Shabaab’s senior leadership has become convinced of the need to withdraw from its alliance with Al-Qaeda and revise its ideological position regarding global jihad. Two individuals considered to be among the closest associates of leader Ahmed Diriye reportedly made secret trips to undisclosed countries in January and April of this year, where they presented recommendations aimed at changing the group’s current direction. Events that have taken place in Afghanistan and Syria in recent years have significantly influenced both the leadership and members of Al-Shabaab. More at the link |
