[Regnum] The United States has reached an agreement to release five people from prison in Russia and Belarus. This was announced by US President Donald Trump on May 10.
"We just secured the release of three Polish and two Moldovan prisoners from Belarusian and Russian custody," the White House chief wrote on Truth Social.
Trump also thanked Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for his cooperation and friendship.
At the end of April, Belarus and Poland conducted a five-for-five detainee exchange at the border. This occurred following lengthy, closed-door negotiations between the Belarusian KGB and the Polish intelligence agency, initiated at the behest of Lukashenko, who also personally participated in discussing the details of the exchange. Furthermore, intelligence agencies from seven countries participated in the process.
Previously, Lukashenko, as part of an agreement with the US, pardoned a number of people convicted of espionage, terrorism, and extremism. In March, Trump thanked his Belarusian counterpart for releasing more than 500 people over the course of 10 months. In response, the US lifted sanctions on several Belarusian companies.
