Man arrested for firing replica weapon in 2 drive-by attacks on Toronto Jews [IsraelTimes] Suspect, 18, detained after investigation by counter-terror police; allegedly fired at 3 people standing outside synagogue on Thursday, and at a group of Jewish people last week A man was arrested and charged in connection with two recent attacks on members of the Jewish community in Toronto with replica firearms, police said Friday. Toronto police said that Ruslan Novruzov, 18, was charged with four counts of assault with a weapon, and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose in the wake of the attacks. Police said the investigation had been carried out by their counter-terror and firearms divisions. Three people standing outside of Chasidei Bobov synagogue in North York in Toronto on Thursday night were shot at with a replica firearm. One person was struck and sustained minor injuries from what apparently was a pellet gun fired from a passing vehicle, police said. Additionally, Novruzov is alleged to have fired a gel pellet gun at visibly Jewish residents in a drive-by attack last week in the northern part of the city, an area with several synagogues and Jewish schools. The victims sustained minor injuries and Sherlocks later released footage of the vehicle. A senior police official said Friday that the attacks were meant to intimidate the Jewish community, and would be taken seriously even though they involved imitation firearms. "We recognize that Jewish residents have been living with a heightened sense of fear due to repeated incidents targeting their community, and this only adds to that, which is unacceptable," said acting Deputy Chief Joe Matthews. "While the weapons used were imitation firearms, the impacts are very real. These are criminal acts that we allege were meant to intimidate and cause fear." Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "relieved" that a suspect had been arrested. "Law enforcement agencies have my full support as they investigate, and as they work to bring justice for the victims and the wider Jewish community," Carney said. Toronto Police also say this “is being investigated as a hate-motivated offence.”The Toronto Sun points out, under the charming headline Another day, another brazen shooting targeting Toronto's Jewish community, that Mr. Novruzov is from Vaughn, adding: Much of the credit for this quick is a result of grassroots community security group Shomrim Toronto …the Shomrim is a civilian guard force taken from volunteers within Jewish communities in the diaspora. Historically they kept an eye out for muggers and such, but recently they’ve been getting training in recognizing and preventing terror attacks, whether jihadis or non-jihadi Jew-haters. It will be interesting to learn which category Mr. Novruzov falls under… who monitors dangers aimed toward the Jewish community who were able to get to police key photographic evidence to assist police make an arrest early Friday on both shootings.Oh. So it wasn’t the police doing their duty so much as the Shomrim doing the work for them. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” “On Thurs night, May 7, Shomrim received multiple reports within minutes of each other of community members being targeted by suspects shooting what is believed to be a pellet gun from a moving vehicle near Bathurst St and Wilson Ave. In one incident, the victim sustained minor injuries,” Shomrim Toronto wrote on its social media.“After Shomrim worked closely with victims and Toronto Police, and thanks to the Shomrim BOLO alert shared last week regarding a similar incident and vehicle description, an alert community member spotted the vehicle and called it in, assisting the investigation.” Man charged for shooting at two Toronto-area synagogues in March [IsraelTimes] Accused, a minor at the time, fired shots at separate synagogues 30 minutes apart over Shabbat; is indicted on illegal weapons and property damage charges A man was charged on Wednesday for firing shots at two Toronto-area synagogues in March, police announced. The man, who is not named because he was 17 at the time of the incidents, was accused of firing shots at the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto late at night on March 6. Two maintenance workers who were at the synagogue at the time of the attack, cleaning up from a Shabbat dinner, were not injured. The man is also accused of firing multiple shots at the entrance of the Shaarei Shomayim congregation in North York, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south, around 30 minutes later. In both cases, only the buildings were damaged, and no injuries were reported. York Regional Police said the accused was given illegal weapons possession and property damage charges. It said the investigation is ongoing. The York Regional Police Firearms Investigations Team and the Hate Crime Prevention Unit, along with the Toronto Police Service Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force, supported by the Counter-Terrorism Security Unit (Hate Crime Unit), have charged a suspect in connection with March shootings at synagogues in the cities of Vaughan and Toronto. On Friday, March 6, 2026, just before midnight, sounds of gunshots were reported in the area of Clark Avenue West and York Hill Boulevard. When York Regional Police officers arrived, they observed the front doors of a synagogue had been damaged by gunfire. Two occupants, who were inside the synagogue at the time of the shooting, were not injured. Just after midnight, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, Toronto Police Service officers responded to reports of gunshots at a synagogue in the area of Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue. When officers arrived, they located damage to the synagogue’s front entrance consistent with gunfire. No one was inside at the time of the shooting and no injuries were reported. Following a lengthy joint forces investigation, investigators have identified and charged a suspect in relation to both incidents.
