Ted Turner was born in 1938 in Ohio. In 1980, he launched CNN, the world's first live, 24-hour news channel. He also acquired the MGM film studio in 1986 and the Hanna-Barbera animation studio in 1991. This allowed Turner to create the specialized networks TNT, TCM, and Cartoon Network.
After his company's merger with the Time Warner conglomerate in 1996 for $7.5 billion, the businessman lost operational control and resigned as vice president. He subsequently invested heavily in environmental projects and funded UN support programs.
