Car drives into pedestrian zone - two dead and many injured 10 ambulances ++ helicopters in action ++ closing shops [Bild] Two people were killed in an incident with a car in downtown Leipzig on Monday afternoon. This was announced by Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung (68, SPD). The perpetrator is caught. It is a German (33) who, according to BILD information, is known to the police. According to Jung, there is no longer a risk situation in Leipzig. According to BILD information, the driver is said to have driven his VW Taigo at high speed over Grimmaische Straße. In addition to the two dead, three people are said to have been seriously injured. According to another spokeswoman, the driver himself stopped his trip and was arrested when he was still in the car. About ten ambulances are at the scene. The shops in the pedestrian zone are closed. The perpetrator is said to have been psychologically conspicuous when he was arrested. Grimmaische Straße has been completely cordoned off by the police. PRIME MINISTER SPEAKS OF ALLEGED RAMPAGE Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (50, CDU) is shaken in a posting on Platform X: "Two people lost their lives in the alleged rampage in Leipzig. This shakes me deeply. My thoughts are with the victims and their relatives," he writes. INVESTIGATION INTO TWO MURDER CASES The Saxon Interior Minister Armin Schuster (64, CDU) also says that a rampage is "most likely". Such a thing would happen in an angry, raging state and often also accompanied by a psychological lability. "Whether all this is true in this case, the police chief and the public prosecutor's office will investigate," Schuster said in the evening. The Leipzig Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating murder in two cases and attempted murder in at least two cases.
The alleged driver, a 33-year-old man with German citizenship, has been arrested. The incident occurred at around 5pm in a major pedestrian zone in Leipzig - which is lined with shops and historic buildings that connect several landmarks with its market square. Images from the scene show a number of emergency service vehicles and personnel in the street as crowds of onlookers gather to watch on after the incident. A silver Volkswagen SUV with a person on top of the vehicle was seen speeding through Grimmaische Street, local broadcaster Radio Leipzig reported. Photos snapped also showed a vehicle with a badly damaged windshield and bonnet. The broadcaster cited witnesses as saying there were several bodies covered with sheets, as well as a stabbing. Police arrested the driver and have said there is no further danger. The suspect is understood to have stopped the car on his own accord.
